Goaltender updates
Dustin Wolf (6 games; 5-1-0 2.34 GAA and .924 SV% in AHL) makes his season debut today vs Senators after dominating the AHL for 2+ seasons. Vladar didn't blow the doors off last night vs Leafs (but wasn't horrible); if Wolf shows up he might force the Flames to put Vladar on waivers to the AHL or a low cost trade.
Injured Starters
Carolina
In what is the most uncertain situations, Freddy's blood-clot issues (and injury history) has the Canes in a tough spot. Raanta is a serviceable 1B/backup goalie on a contender but I don't think they can rely on him as the main starter for more than a small stretch. Kochetkov is doing great in the AHL but has struggled in his NHL spot-duty time this season.
Pittsburgh
Jarry is back today from eye swelling suffered in that freak incident that saw him take a direct shot to the face with his mask loose. Penguins get 6 days off until their next game and Nedeljkovic can return for the back half of the B2B on 11/19. Hellberg probably remains in Pitt until then.
Tampa Bay
Vasilevskiy appears on track to return "before end of November"; the Lightning schedule doesn't have a B2B until 11/27-28 so I'm sure Johansson can hold the fort until then.
Trade Market
Buyers
Toronto
Woll played OK against Flames but Samsonov gets the B2B game vs Vancouver as they continue to split starts. They get a 5 day break in action. With other trade rumors flying moving Samsonov's contract and performance might be the way out. Few goalies in "starter" tier come in under his cap however: Blackwood (SJ) is one; Fleury, Reimer, and Driedger are others.
Edmonton
Skinner has the job for now see if he can step up; everyone is watching to see what Edmonton does (if anything) to address overall team issues defense/goaltending included. The cap crunch with Campbell's contract causes constraints to correct the chaos. I've heard the Oilers want someone to platoon with Skinner as a veteran "mentor" but if they also want to fix their defense they'll need a cheap contract goalie or a major piece is moving out.
Columbus
Merzlikins/Martin continue to platoon while Tarasov remains injured; but Elvis is underperforming and really looks like he needs a change of scenery (understandable). They have cap space and elite prospects to move if needed (Kent Johnson); suppose it depends on if they think they are in contention mode now and in the next few seasons.
Ottawa
Forsberg has used up his past goodwill and is struggling this season in what was expected to be a 1A/1B platoon (60/40) if Korpisalo can't carry the load as a full-fledged workhorse then Sogaard might leapfrog Forsberg or they look to move out Forsberg for a veteran backup. Sens are in last place in their division and if they want to climb the ladder they can't wait as long as the other teams to address issues.
Los Angeles
Talbot has taken the reigns and shown he was worth the gamble on him (not so much $, but the opportunity); however Copley is what he is and that is not a 1B goalie on a Stanley Cup contender. While they might outscore his performance in the regular season; the Kings have to be concerned about playoff time with him behind Talbot who is not the most healthy guy in the past. Again the cap leaves little wriggle room here; so I wonder if Portillo gets a shot to see if he can play in the NHL or if they look for someone like Reimer.
Sellers
Detroit
Red Wings continue to showcase Reimer as the 1B, holding Lyon back in reserve. This seems very strategic to pump up Reimer's trade value and his 1.80 GAA , .933 SV% and $1,500,000 contract could be time to sell high on him in the market with teams starting to panic. Edmonton and Detroit have made deals recently; the Oilers are in cap hell while the Wings have space.
Philadelphia and Anaheim
Both of these teams have outperformed expectations; is it "for real" or just an early season hot streak. Both GM's are very committed to their compass and won't be swayed by "false starts"; so we'll see if Carter Hart and/or John Gibson are on the market or not. Both are in a "sell high" mode with their performance so far. Hart ($3,979,000 x 1) 8 games: 4-3-0, 2.52 GAA, and .913 SV%; Gibson ($6,400,000 x 4; M-NTC) 7 games: 2-4-0, 2.41 GAA, and .921 SV%. Anaheim (3 retained salary spots) might be more willing to move Gibson with Dostal showing he can play at the NHL level but Gibson's no trade protection gives him the power; Philly (2 retained salary spots left) would be "tanking" since the rest of their goalies are unproven.
Montreal
Carrying three goalies all with similar performance per game but different levels of experience should give the Habs some flexibility, but little cap space means they can't take back more cap space and they already have 2 retained contract spots used up. Allen ($3,850,000 x 2 and with M-NTC) is tougher to move but has better track record; Montembeault ($1,000,000 x 1) is 27 years old but is only recently been seen as anything more than a backup.
Speculation
I wonder about Minnesota and MA Fleury; since they have Wallstedt in AHL would they move him to a contender for assets (with his blessing of course)?
Are the Devils content with their tandem? Vanecek and Schmid have been underwhelming so far. I'm inclined to give Schmid time to continue developing but this is an elite contender of a roster who needs their goalie to bail them out from time-to-time. The rest of their roster is built really well; but they are running out of cap space to fix the netminder issue.
Saros rumours are going to pick up since he has a great contract for his level of skill ($5,000,000 x 2 years); Preds are in last place of their division; and they have a "goalie of the future" on the doorstep. Imagine if Preds-Oilers made a Saros for Draisatl blockbuster? Edmonton would have cap space to add another defender too (maybe even from the Preds who have 4 RHD with NHL experience). Predators have enough cap space to pursue another NHL goalie after that if they wanted to.
Avs are waiting out the Francouz injury but even when he returns there is going to have to be a lot of faith placed in his continue health and availability for what is expected to be a deep playoff run. That contract ($2 million) seemed good at the time but now it is difficult to support for an oft-injured backup.
