Waiting on Stamkos extension makes sense

Description
Firstly, Stamkos will be 34 years old at the end of this season. Paying anyone at that age, with term, is never a good idea, especially for a team that wants to extend its contending window. Unless Tampa proves they still have what it takes to win a Stanley Cup this season, it's very possible that Stamkos would provide more value to the team by trading him at the deadline. The return would be substantial, probably more than any rental in the past few seasons. It would open up a lot of cap space (along with the ~87.7 million dollar cap) that can be used for a pretty solid FA class. Not to mention, at this moment, William Nylander is still a 2024 free agent.

This is a legitimate route I can see the Lightning taking if they are struggling for a playoff spot, and it's certainly feasible that they struggle without their #1 goaltender for the first 2 months of the season.

    Stamkos has said before he envisions himself being a Bolt until the end of his contract, then what happens next is what happens next.

    He still has a chance of winning in TB with the core he's got, and flipping him would be an ultimate desperation move. Even then it's unlikely he waives his NMC mid season to travel across the entire US for one playoff run with no extension in place.

    We're more likely to promote Syracuse players like Goncalves, Groshev, etc instead of signing journeymen. Also, you mention going after Nylander, so why are we offering Jake DeBrusk a 6x6? Couldn't that money be put to a better player like Willy?.. a guy named Stamkos also comes to mind 😅

    Not much appreciation of Stamkos full NMC. Bolts don't even ask their captain to waive his NMC.

    The premise of your title is correct. However the reasoning behind your logic is completely wrong.the reason waiting is good is TB can be certain on dollar amount they can afford.
