I like this team a lot but from a Canucks perspective, it would be horrible cap management retaining on Garland along with the OEL buyout. And if they retain, Canucks need good pieces back. No way they add a pick and retain. I'm sure Monahan could be had for less (or play Geekie on the third line in the role the Bs sold him on) if you wanted Garland without retention.

Kings decline. Flower was traded from Vegas to CHI for a guy who has never and will never play in the NHL then traded from CHI to MIN with 50% retention for only a 2nd. So if you plan on retaining 50% on Ullmark for just a 2nd round pick Kings accept otherwise we will take our chances in free agency.

The question is whether you believe Garland is worth his salary. My belief is he is a $3m forward who makes $5m and wouldn’t have an interest without at least $1m in retention.

I’d rather have the cap flexibility next year.

With regards to the other trades, I don’t think the value makes sense and frankly, the Kings don’t really have the prospects that I’d be interested in. They can go with their goaltenders and see if the risk makes sense. There next step is to trade for Jack Campbell at full retention

The Kings aren't planning on solving any long-term goaltender issues this season. If their 3 NHL experienced goaltenders can't get it done, they'll trade for a rental like they did last season. My money is on Kevin Lankinen from Nashville. Talbot has been fantastic so far for them this season, so they're content to ride what they have for now.

The long-term goaltender fix won't happen until next summer, at the earliest.

Ullmark is younger than Fleury was and is also making less, so I think the Bruins can get back more for him than Vegas did for Fleury

The problem is that next off-season, Ullmark wouldn't be a long-term solution. He'd be another one-year stopgap.
