Trade The Core Four And Jumpstart A Rebuild

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 5, 2023
Published: Dec. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If you still think a team without a defense, a goalie and a coach can win a Stanley Cup, give your head a shake. This team was constructed badly. Awful contracts were handed out, gritty forecheckers like Hyman, Kadri, and Moore were moved on from and replaced with soft skilled guys who disappear in the playoffs every year. Imagine a third line of Hyman - Kadri - Moore. Leafs could have had that if they were managed better all these years.

Shanahan needs to go. He should have left with Dubas in the summer. And he needs to take Treliving and Keefe with him.

Enough is enough with this "core four" foolishness. Let's hope the Leafs actually start to build a real hockey team, from the net out. The new team should have an elite goalie in net, stars on the defense, and grit up front. The only players on the current roster I'd keep long-term are Knies, Cowan, and Rielly. Make Rielly the new captain, he should be a Leaf for life.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Garland, Conor
  2. Myers, Tyler

Additional Details:
Miller moves to the wing, or to match up against the Kings in the playoffs, JT is stapled to the 3rd line. If the Canucks are serious about winning a cup, and I think they have the defense, coach, and goalie to do it, they need to bring in a legitimate center to compete with L.A. and Vegas.

  2. Olausson, Oskar
  3. Tatar, Tomas
  4. 2024 1st round pick (COL)

Additional Details:
Tatar and O'Connor are cap filler. The trade is a 1st and a prospect plus a 3rd for the retention.

  1. Simashev, Dmitri [Reserve List]
  2. Söderström, Victor
  3. Voracek, Jakub
  4. Zucker, Jason

  7. 2025 2nd round pick (TOR)
ARI

Additional Details:
Now that Arizona is competitive and in a playoff spot they can dream bigger and really shake up the hockey universe by bringing home their very own.

This is one of the deals I could see the Capitals actually doing which sucks because McMichael is one of the only positives lights on this team outside of Protas

The only way the Canucks consider moving Willander is if they’re getting a bonafide top 4 RHD that fits the age of our core. Leafs don’t have that to offer

I disagree actually. Caps will- make a big pursuit for Nylander in offseason and keep assets. Plus, Oshie will most likely go to LTIR at the end of the season

Leafs certainly aren't getting much for Marner, except bad cap in return. Not getting much for Matthews who is signed for 4.5m years.
Tavares doesn't waive.

Liljegren

I like Liljegren but he doesn’t fit that description. I’m talking about a guy like a Rasmus Andersson or Noah Dobson (not saying those two are likely to be traded, but a player like that)

In the Matthews deal Leafs are getting the equivalent of 4 1sts. In the Marner deal, which only has 1 year and a half left, plus he's overpaid by 2 million, Leafs get back two good picks and a good young player.

That's fair.

The AZ trade is fascinating. The trade value is pretty spot on for Matthews, but Simashev is a difficult add. But and Simashev were drafted together to allow for the Russian transition, in retrospect it was a brilliant move. Both players are NHL caliber, reasonable comps Slavin and a bigger stronger faster Corey Perry (terrifying thought, I know). They should remain as a package. Maybe swap out Simashev for Geekie? That kid is going to be a monster with proper development, Nic Lindstrom kind of potential.

This is the first kinda interesting Nylander-to-COL in a minute. They have no chance to re-sign him, it's a rental, but that's a goooood rental.

I probably wouldn't do it but it's bc i like LoC too much

No fu*kin way the Canucks are trading Willander for that. Like someone has said the only way they trade him is for a bonafide young top4 RD. The keyword there is bonafide which means Lilijegren doesn't count either.

They get back a 1C at 8 million for 2 playoff runs and a top 4 defenceman at 2 million for 2 more years. They also get rid of the horrible Myers and Garland contracts without having to pay any picks or adding any sweeteners.

This is a deal that favours the Canucks.

Tavares would be the 3rd best C on the Canucks

Myers contract ends after this season and Garland’s isn’t that bad. No need to get out of either contract

Oh God it's back! Nylander is a rental for the Avs and while the value is at least reasonable the Avs can't afford to rent him.
