Ya basically, cause for a team to match the overall money the AAV comes up quite a bit

Dont know if the hawks would give nylander 12, but they'd absolutely pay a 3rd to secure his signing rights

That Hab trade is just terrible for the Leafs.

The Habs have found a lock with Matheson, and are unlikely to trade him to a division rival.

Idk if someone would actually offer something like that but for Chicago who is paying no one 12 mil a year isn’t too bad and when they are good the cap will be up

But 12 x 8 is 96mil total
At 7 years to get to 96mil a team would have to pay 13.7mil a season.

So Chicago doing this would make it so no other team could or want to match

Why. They give up no major prospects and if they are going to trade away a 1st for a defenceman then might at well get one that can play 25 minutes a night, play on the PP and PK and make under 5mil for a couple years

Guys on pace for 50plus points.

I don't know why a team like the Habs wouldn't take a better deal from a division rival. Matheson has two years left on his contract. Habs aren't making the playoff this year and certainly won't be overtaking the Leafs next season. Why eliminate seven trading partners from your division or even fifteen from the conference.?

I imagine with who good he's been, it's likely they look to keep him. They want to start building for contention.

The package isn't anything significant either.

Doesn't help the Leafs THAT much year. Timmins is playing OK at RHD...a necessary position Niemela might be Leaf next year. Roberson is a Leaf and expect the Leafs to give a first and more? Monahan isn't needed.

What more could you want. Cause I can tell you he won’t get 2 firsts. Chychrun got a first and 2 seconds and I think everyone would say Chychrun is better.

If Montreal want to build maybe move the play that has high value in his age 30 season.

By the time Montreal is anywhere close to good they will have to pay him like a top guy and he’ll be 32.

Not a smart business decision

when healthy Timmins won’t even be in the lineup.

Robo was brought up to gain value. He playing fine but still isn’t great defensively and I just can’t see that 3rd line right now competing in the playoffs. Imagine that line on the road against Tampas first line in their own zone. Keefe will play them even less.

Niemela is a 5’9” 160lbs offensive defenceman that without the PP would be useless for the leafs. Don’t even try to tell me any different.

Just cause they were once drafted in the second round doesn’t mean they are worth that. Stop acting like the leafs prospects are so amazing. They have like 2 good ones.

Monahan on the 3rd line would be great for the leafs. A player that can move up and down the line up. Can score, can play on the PK. What’s wrong with that

Niemela might have been 5"9 and 160 pounds years ago, but looks like he isn't now. Domi has found his niche as the 3rd line centre.....He's certainly not a first line winger.

Why would they trade a 3rd to make him the highest-paid winger? If some team makes Nylander the highest-paid player at 13.7M, every other GM will be mad because that's going to raise the cost of players but they aren't going to try to even compete with that. Nylander's camp wouldn't even be expecting to get an offer like that in FA, they might hope for something like 12M-12.5x7 maybe, so something like 10.5M-11Mx8 or 12Mx7 (whatever they would have offered him as an FA) is something that CHI might do.

Can't imagine the Leafs trading him for a 3rd either, if he hits FA, they still have a chance to retain him, so they would likely want something ridiculous like a 1st (CHI's 2nd) if they are going to close that door off.

Seeing so many Nylander proposals now, kinda weird considering he’s playing like a Superstar now.

Are negotiations not going good?

There's no news or rumors on the negotiations, all we know is that he's not officially signed yet. Some of those who are proposing Nylander trades think it's more important to retain assets than it is to keep him for the run and try to retain him up (until he signs with another team in FA) due to the risk of potentially losing him for nothing. So, they might come up with a trade that addresses some needs but more than likely wouldn't even be available.

And all you want is a 3rd rd pick for his signing rights?

I think that's just silly to cut off any chances of being able to re-sign him for a mere 3rd. A 1st? Maybe. The Leafs will lose any advantage they have over other teams once he hits FA, but that also means Nylander is potentially losing money by missing out on that 8th year, a good team or a team that he would be interested in doesn't need to be going to offer him a similar offer. Both Panarin and Tavares passed on higher AAV offers to end up in NY and TOR, Panarin still ended up being the highest-paid winger but it's not like Tavares ended up being the highest-paid C, although he had the opportunity supposedly.

See the edit below as well.

I’m confused. If it’s silly why did you offer it?

And also confused on this. Why wouldn’t the Leaf’s look at the Tkachuk deal as a template. Which was Tkachuk (who wouldn’t sign in Calgary) traded for Huberdeau and Weegar? Why only a 3rd round pick?

I'm not the OP, Bennecon is the one who made this thread.

Because Tkachuk was an RFA, huge difference. Maybe the Leafs could try trading his rights for another ufa or untendered rfa's rights + a pick but that's about the best they would get.

I made the offer and the trade would be after the season is over when he’s weeks away from being a free agent. If they went through the season and don’t think they can resign him the best they could get is a pick for his rights so some team could give him a 8th on his contract

This is only if it comes down to a point where the leafs have tried anything and everything to keep him but find they just can’t

My bad.

Ahh k didn’t realize that. Yeh RFA vs. UFA is gonna make a difference there. I’m still surprised the return would be so low though, but I guess that’s the value of just Rights. Would a sign and trade be at all possible to maximize return…?

Ahh okay thanks for the explanation. Makes sense now. So it’s kind of like the Hyman situation then, where he was UFA and Dubas was trying to get a small pick from the Oilers to get him that 8th year. But then Dubas didn’t take the pick. What was up with that?
