I get that Aquatic. But how often are you going to this much skill in your lineup? I’ve been a Leafs fan for over 30 years and have never had this much talent. We have about a 4-5 year window to win while these guys are all at their best and under contract. So yes, in this situation I would definitely give up some future for the NOW.

Leafs shouldn't be giving up prospects for a cap dump, worse player and Monahan, Pezz is a wash

Especially Minten who will be in the Leafs lineup as soon as next year

What you don’t seem to understand Herb is that Savard and Allen both have term left, which makes them more valuable than those UFA’s at years end.

That logic is flawed as then I'd guess Pierre Engvall and Scott Mayfield has equal value to Matthews and Makar bc they both have more term

He may be on the in a year but he won’t be as good as Monaghan for about 3 years. Looking for options to win now. I think we have until Matthews contract is up to make something happen. I think he is going home after this tenure is up, which is why he only signed 5. Give time for Arz to rebuild and get an arena. So yes I’m giving up some future for guys that are ready to win now

i understand that, also another reason not to do it, you can find a betetr bottom pairing d for less and a better backup for less

Sure... But you still need to have youth coming up in the lineup... Look at Vegas, Colorado, TBLx2, St. Louis, Washington, Pittsburgh x2 etc.

It's not worth it to give it up for a boarderline 3C, a 3rd pairing defensemen and a cap dump IMO

That habs trade is so bad for the leafs. A 33 year old almost 4 mill back up with term who isnt better than the guy they trade, a massive defensive downgrade also on a bad contract with term, and a mediocre 4th liner on his best day. Monahan is the only decent add but hes not half good enough to warrent the other bad adds or the price let alone both

Term on bad players with bad contracts makes them less valuable, not more

So you’re using Engvall/Mayfield to Matthews/Makar comparison, when I’m using Allen(who is better than Sammy), Savard and Brodie/Sammy? Not sure why you guys are so high on Brodie still. I’d take Savard(playing his own side), more physical, great on PK, sticks up for his goalie and teammates and $1.5M less over Brodie. Only people that still like Brodie are people that follow analytics

Why would he do that now. Team is rebuilding and don’t have an NHL arena. Makes sense to stay in TO for 5 more years and have a chance to win

Habs trade is truly awful, sorry to say. Minten should be untouchable (unless we land a true impact player in return); he’s not just long term future, he should be on team next year, when we’ll need elc’s contributing. Monahan is better but his injury history is massive red flag, too much of a risk imo. The rest is a hot mess and makes zero sense

Unfortunately for the Leafs Treliving already said that both Cowan and Minton are off the table in trades this year. I don't know how he plans on upgrading the roster (especially the bottom 6 and D) without including the only interesting peices the Leafs have but that's his problem I guess.

You personally don’t think that Allen/Savard are an upgrade for the Leafs over Brodie/Sammy. I’m sorry but Sammy does not have a strong enough mental game to make it in Toronto. You need calm and cool and be able to let things roll off you. Just like Andersen and Campbell, not made for big markets

that didnt stop the narrative before. he'll probbaly resign with the leafs again, and then people will say hes going to arizona his next deal

So say Domi has a great year at C and steps up in playoffs. Do you still drop him for Minten to be 3C? Where does Cowan fit as well? Can’t play all these new guys on the 3rd line and not worth it if they are getting 4th line minutes

- It's a very hyperbolic example but Sammy clears Allen and Allen has term... Allen's worse than Murray was last year...

- Brodie is significantly better than Savard, while I do think the Leafs should knock for Savard, not at anything valuable... His biggest value is standing in front of shots on the PK...

- Brodie is still needed on this team... His puck recovery rates are long the best in the league... And you score on the transition when defences don't get into their defensive posture

Leafs wouldn't take it as they already have cap space to keep Brodie

Either way, no way we will have this star power still past 5 years time. Just want to give the team the best chance to win in that window.
