Seth Jones bro?? You know he had like a 190 years left on his deal. No one is retaining that much money for that long. Massive overpayment. Sorry man, don’t like to rude but bad target and huge overpay.

How can it be an overpay if you say Chicago wouldn't do it?

Chicago and Jones decline that trade. They aren't retaining 2.5M for 7 years.

No where near enough for Hanifin

Actually, even as a CHI fan, I can say this is definitely possible. They are two different organizations in two completely different situations. For CHI, we have a lot invested in him before we even consider the cost of retaining $2.5M for 7 years. For TOR, they are certainly in win now mode, but they also don't have a whole lot in their pipeline and don't have much draft capital either. So, justifying sending out that many assets for one player can be a very difficult.

Chicago would never retain that amount of money for that many years. Toronto would never put all those assets into an overpayed average D man

If Jones is just an average D then I don't see why Chicago wouldn't get out of that deal at the cost of 2.5M on the cap while adding 2 high end prospects.

In 4 years would they even find a team to take him on at 50% retention?

Why would the leafs ever do this. Giving up all of their good prospects for an overpayment.

Hawks decline. As accurately stated by others before me, they aren't retaining on Jones for 7 years.

Jones is untradeable w/ that contract. Most likely scenario is he plays another 3 or 4 seasons for Hawks and then gets bought out.

Leafs pass on both and zero chance they spend 2 1sts this year and Minten and Cowan are untouchable

Truly, next level, terrible trade for the Leafs. You’re moving out top 2 prospects, + a 1st & 3rd and 2 roster players for a good player, but on a (universally acknowledged) very bad contract. Can’t even begin to understand how you think this one flies 🤦🏻

If you buy him out in 2027 his cap hit is 7.8M until 2030, and then 833K until 2033. That's a great buyout number while Bedard is in his prime. Why would you not trade him and only retain 2.5M while getting picks and prospects? You obviously have no clue what you're talking about if you'd rather buy him out than trade with retention. If you want to keep him for the entirety that's another story.

Jones at 7M is a positive asset. Look at Doughtys underlying numbers while the Kings were rebuilding. Nobody is going to look great playing 25 min a night with AHL players.

Chicago would jump at this, they would jump at half of this. Take out everything and make it futures without retention and they jump at it. They will have to pay to move Jones. Likely have to retain and get pretty much nothing back if they can move him.

You are missing the point big time sir. No one will offer anything for Jones. Chicago either has to just eat his salary for 7 years and watch him become an AHL player, or find some sucker to take his contract or the majority of it for very little. This is ridiculous and they would accept half of this before the proposal was even finished.
