Bad trade for the leafs.

I just don't really have interest in Markstrom, have a lot of faith in Woll and think we can spend that money better, maybe we entertain it if you swap him out for Hanifin.

Jackets decline. Why would they trade sillinger for a late first that will take years to develop and hopefully turn into a sillinger type player

Nylander is definitely not going to sign in Calgary.

This is crazy lopsided. We get Nylander for 7 years who will just keep us in the mushy middle of the league, then Swiss Cheese Samsonov that can’t seem to make a save. We have enough bad contracts don’t need more, and the late first doesn’t help us at all. Terrible trade for the Flames.

Samsonov is basically a cap dump; they need to shed salary and he's not needed with Woll and Markstrom; Wolf will cover the pipes for CGY next year.
Nylander was BORN in Calgary, so don't see why he wouldn't sign there longterm (for big money) if they're in a retool - we need RW and scoring. He's perfect in that mix. \Unless you know something I don't?

Trying to break this down...

Timmins and Samsonov basically 0 value in the trade and are simply cap ballast. Since Sammy in on an expiring deal and Timmins has one more year at a low cap...I don't think any compensation needs to be factored in

Then I take Tanev + 3rd + salary retentions for Leafs 1st...which I think is fair. I don't think Tanev is worth a 1st but I think he's worth more than a 3rd.

Then we have Markstrom and Lindholm for Nylander....which I don't personally like. I'd rather try and keep Nylander on an extension than try and keep Lindholm on an extension...but no doubt our C depth would be improved with JT beginning his decline. So we're left with a retained Markstrom making up the difference between Willy and Lindholm.

I still wouldn't do it....and I think there needs to be an assumption that all pending UFA's resign to make it palatable for either side...but I don't hate the value proposition
