We draft Helenuis and possibly makes the playoffs in 2025

Created by: Caufield
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 1, 2024
Published: Jan. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Why this team could make the playoffs:

-Dach is back
-The addition of Toffoli rounds out the offense very well
-Most of the team ages for the better
-Team depth is very respectable
-Pesce adds experience and stability to the D
-A mix of youth and veterans is very good in the team

Why this team could get held back from playoffs

- Questionable tendy. Monty is great, however, I'm not sure he can hold the season for 50+ games with a young backup behind him.
-Injury-prone team still, with Dach, Savard, Anderson, Monahan, Newhook, and even Cole, being players that could miss some games
-Tough division
The defense is still arguably a bit young

Depends on the draft order. I think MTL will get 6th, and a lot of teams drafting before will target Ds. MTL got a solid shot of getting Helenuis and if not, Lindstrom (who is better imo)

If I’m picking right now I’m taking Lindstrom 2nd, Levshunov 3rd, Helenius 4th, Demidov 5th. Habs will pick between Eiserman , Dickinson and Buium

This team looks really far from the playoffs in this conference. Look at Buffalo and Ottawa that are ahead in their rebuilds and still not close to competing for a playoff spot.

Getting Toffoli back and resigning Monahan would be fun!

Our big.question mark is gonne be center next year. Suzuki proved he.can play top 6c, even 1c, but dach as a center has a lot to prove, i wonder how he wil be after missing a full year to injury. Still he might end up playing in the wing, so hopefully can figure out this Center game.

Fair price on Allen I’d pay that if other options don’t materialize. Wouldn’t be my first choice tho, or my second or my 3rd

The thing Dach has to prove the most is health/longevity on a full season. When healthy, he is unquestionably our best center imo

I dont get it. He is our best center yet played winger most of his time here. And produced far less than suzuki too.
why would he be Unquestionnably our best center?

Who would be those first, second and third choices?
Would Allen be choice four or further down the list?

Jets will pass on that, they'll send you Morgan Barron for any of the 1st round picks you have though.

Choice 1: Filip Gustafsson or Jeremy Swayman if possible, would consider putting Mercer on the table to make it happen
Choice 2: cheaper 1 year stopgap with a guy like Mrazek, Stolarz, Nedjelkovic
Choice 3: one of the older vets at a higher price, retained Gibson, retained Markstrom, unretained Jarry, Saros, Ullmark etc

Going into next year with Allen and Vanacek on the books for 7+ million isn’t something I particularly want, but if push comes to shove I don’t want to throw this season down the gutter with Vanacek for the sake of “value”

I have Helenius 5-6 on my sheet... Eiserman and Dickenson are 3-4 (no doubt about 1-2 Celi & Lindstrom)

Value aside, the Sharks are definitely not in the market for left-shot defensemen.

Pesce's biggest hang up to resigning this summer was supposedly term, and I'm sure that another team would offer him more than 2 years (canes included) when he is a UFA. I agree he'd be a good veteran defenseman to help hold down the right side, just don't think that contract is what gets him to sign in MTL.

I know demidov fell off at the start of the season but didnt he rebound? I thought he was a lock for 2 or 3?

I would 100% take him at like 3 but the new KHL rule where we might not see him for like 4 years plays a big factor in him dropping.

Interesting, sooo many teams with goalie issues right now.

I'm wondering what Boston will do with their goalies, assume they keep both for this season and one of them gets traded in the summer, probably Ullmark just due to the age difference between him and Swayman the B's will keep the younger guy.
Would assume Minnesota has no interest in moving Gus even with Wallstedt in the system, goalies take time to develop so cant jump the gun.

I think Mrazek is the Devils best short term option, he might also be worth keeping around for another season or two to tandem with Schmid cause really there isn't a ton of options out there, personally see Mrazek as a better option then Ned or Stolarz.

Maybe Saros could be pried from Nashville, whats his acquisition cost and extension look like though, both are likely to be steep.. 😳

Sens would draft before... like 3 OA: Demidov or a SOLID D will be available like: Dickenson and Levshunov... they are like Ghule/Reinbacher type

All very true points. I like Mrazek too because of his expensive contract but 1 year term. Allows us to use the dougie LTIR money and minimize how much draft capital we’d have to give up.

I think just a stopgap goalie and going after a dman like Marcus Pettersson is enough for us to be legit contenders. Literally even with the worst goaltending in hockey, massive injuries across the board, we’re still in a playoff spot.

With average goaltending, a quality veteran dman, and better health I’d be confident in our cup chances
