Oh boo hoo. Leafs are keeping one of the best scoring wingers in his prime. 8 year contract extension. Cap will be going up quite a bit over that time.

What did you expect? 🤔

Overpay... Maybe a little. But other teams would offer Nylander more. Also if we could sign said other players on this lineup we can still field a competitive roster despite the Nylander contract.
Shows that if smart business (meaning no Reaves and klingberg deals, (Bertuzzi and Domi have been working out better)) Treliving has good options next year. The key work patience. Don't rush signings.

It would have been a lot better to get this done in the off season. Treliving sucks

11+ is entirely Treliving being stupid. Tried to grind him in the off season lost all the leverage and then got bent over. Its extremely clear that he's a bad GM.

Will always be buyer beware for long term extensions of players that carries them into their mid 30s. Especially forwards. Leaf fans are also nervous about any signing that is based off on the assumption of a massive Cap raise for years to come... Marner and Tavares AAV wouldn't look so bad if that whole pandemic thing didn't happen... however here we are!

Anyway, Leafs have cap space to play with next year, I would rather prefer a 1 year "prove your consistency" contract but we all know that will never happen.

Even after the year he has had, $11MM is high. Like he hasn't been as good as Pastrnak over his career. Not even as good as Marner. He's going to get $1.75MM more than Matt Tkachuk?? That's wild.

While I do think Nylander is critically underrated I think a smart GM would have done whatever it took to get him signed before this season started. If you actually watch Willy it's undeniable that he's absolutely an elite talent. He has been for stretches the best player on the leafs. And that has always been a reality. Even in his first few seasons. You'd get games or parts of games where no one can stop him. No one. But he'd tail off and be invisible for long stretches. And we have seen every year more and more consistency. What does a fully committed Willy look like? This season shouldn't have been a surprise. I saw it coming. Been saying for years he's going to be a 40+ goal 90-100 point player. And he's even surpassed my expectations. I think he's better than Marner and sometimes better than Mathews. Resigning him was a must but be proactive get it done before he blows up bigger than he's shown in the past. Treliving and Shanahan suck and this is the result.

I think the way Willy plays should keep him as an elite player for a long time. Longer than most. Very little wear and tear on the body with how he plays

So....Kyper is the one saying 8x$11m +, yes?

All Friedman did was confirm that they are close on an extension but the terms are unknown.

In the summer...Kyper said matthews at $14-$15m. So...is Kyper just looking to stir things up for attention? Is he helping Rogers along by tossing out a huge number so that when the player actually signs for less, we all think it's a "win"?

I think Nylander needs to get extended, no doubt...I just think it will be over 10 but under 11.

I also think he should max out aav if it's a 6yr deal...on a 7-8yr deal that number should go down a bit...at age 35 and 36, regardless of the cap ceiling at that time...you probably don't want him at $11m

I think you're right on that. His offensive IQ is incredible. When he decides to match that IQ with effort he actually becomes a dominant player. He has done that several times this season, last season, and some moments in playoffs. Its the games that his effort takes a backseat that cause worry. What's worse is it is entirely random. He'll put forth an incredible effort in a November game against Boston. Then "float" in a March game against Florida. Or look like he's possessed in a February game against Columbus... and then be invisible the next night against Tampa.

Of course if you only look at stat sheets, the above can be said for almost any player. Anyway, here's to hoping he can get that effort more consistent, cause man is he fun to watch when it is on!

No that's not entirely correct. His consistency has been an issue for most of his career but it's become less of an issue every year and this year he's been dominant almost every game. In every zone. Getting older is a big reason why he's become more consistent. The scary thing is, he still has more to give.

Tkachuk was an RFA.

Perhaps don't let guys get that close to UFA with all the leverage.

An RFA with a year left and a poison pill qualifier. He had the power there.

Yeah the power to choose his destination.

Tkachuk gave away his leverage in contracts in florida by using his leverage in calgary to get there in the first place. If he tried to hardball Florida they wouldn't have traded for him

Agree 100%. A joke that such a one dimensional player can get that number. I hope the only reason they are doing this is so the Blackhawks make a trade with them once the season is over instead of losing him for nothing

Nylander doesn't miss games. And he's as consistent as it gets producing points. I think he's taken for granted in Toronto. Not by all Leaf fans. But by quite a few. Any of the other 31 teams would love to have Nylander on their teams.

Then he should've been signed earlier. That's not Nylander's fault. It's the Leafs fault. Willy bet on himself and won. Leafs played Russian Roulette and lost. Now it's time to pay up.

What does a coping thread with a Nylander extension have to do with the Blues trading Buchnevich in a laughable return?

Oh I just threw that part in because that's actually going to happen. Doug Armstrong is a close family friend and he definitely told me this was going to happen tbh.

Good to know, I was actually at a NYE party with Shannahan and he said that he didn't like the deal tbh.
