It’s a bit messy with lots of moving parts but just trying to be creative

I can't see the Pens moving a 1st at all. IMO paying a 1st and 3rd for a 3rd line center isn't worth it at all

The incentive is based on the package MTL and CAR would conjure up. Allen puts a bandaid on the goaltending and there’s more pieces to be worked out between the two teams. Just going off Friedman’s report anyway

If only there was a way for Montreal to book a trade today with a 4th team but that would be effective July 1st. Instead they would need to warehouse a risk without knowing the return on a 5+ year contract.

There isn’t a big enough upgrade available that would necessitate the Canes to clear that much cap. Bunting isn’t going anywhere. If push came to shove and the Canes actually got desperate enough for a goalie, Freddie and TDA clear out 5mil in cap space without negatively impacting the roster too much. Considering they signed him this offseason, AND gave him trade protection, they aren’t going to ship him out not even a full season later, especially with how good he has been. Bunting is a major reason why the Canes PP has been clicking as it has.

So a guy who had to be paired with a 1st two seasons ago to move is now worth a 1st and a 3rd? Come on.

Context must be a hard thing for you to grasp

So the pens would get Bunting and Monahan for Graves, Broz, Belliveau, a 1st, a 2nd, two 3rds, a 4th, and a 5th? That’s A LOT! No thanks

Context must be a hard thing for you to grasp

Actually context is one of my strengths. As a lover of history, I find context to be the most important thing. My comment was entirely about context.

Monahan was so bad two years ago that he needed a 1st attached to him to move. Why? Well, looking at his numbers for a few years leading up to that trade and how he got to that point:
2013 - 2017:
Averaged 18 goals and 37 points per season 5v5
Averaged 7 goals and 18 points per season 5v4

Towards the end of that period above, he was given a big contact and (as a former 6th overall pick) expected to take a step forward. Boy did he!

2018 those numbers went up to 20 goals and 59 points 5v5 & 11 goals and 22 points 5v4. Unfortunately, that was his apex.

2019: 11 / 25 (5v5) and 7 / 15 (5v4)
2020: 5 / 17 and 4 / 8
2021: 5 / 10 and 5 / 13 and he got hurt

So Calgary had seen enough. Montreal took Monahan and a 1st and hoped for a bounceback.
2022: 3 / 9 & 1/ 3 and hurt again

Now Monahan had no market so he resigned with MTL for 1yr / 2MM and has played better (at least on the PP).
2023: 2 / 9 & 5 / 11 on pace for 5 / 20 & 10 / 22

So with all of that context in place. Tell me, why is a guy who, if he stays healthy which is a big if, worth a 1st if he is on pace for 20 points 5v5.

But, you're saying, you shouldn't discount his value on the PP. That's true. He is a top 50 goal scorer on the PP. His defensive metrics are middle of the pack. He has good faceoff numbers. All of that is in his favor. Unfortunately, history is not.

Which ironically brings me back to context. It is you who is not looking at the context of his situation and history. Blinded by a single season where he looks to be back on the PP. But, his 5v5 numbers are still not good and he is a rental.

So, why is he worth a 1st +?
