per 32 thoughts Laine is unhappy and cbj realizes they need to cut ties and would need to retain half to rid him while he still has some value

Interesting proposal. No dog in this race, but I’ll have to get the popcorn out for this one. Curious what both fanbases think of this one.

I’d be worried if Laine will ever be happy anywhere. He seems to put about half the effort required to be an NHLer, and when things go eventually south for him he looks to blame anyone but himself.

Not enough there to retain half (doubt they'd be willing to anyway with the term Laine has left)

I'd do like 1.5-2 mil retention for a 1st and a mid round pick, but if a team want 50% retained in a deal, I think CBJ are better off just eating the contract.

agreed but his productive years in winnipeg when he was always playing with schiefle and connor brought out the best in him before im thinking the same with bowie and barz can do it

Half retention is definitely not required, that's just mental. You're insane.

Maybeeee. But playing with Johnny hockey hasn’t really worked. So proceed with caution.

IMO offer seems fair enough. For both CBJ and Isles fans, would it be better to send a contract back in place of retention(like Palmieri or Pageau)?

Yea I’d probably see that as more reasonable that eating half his contract. I still think you’d have to retain at least 1 mil maybe 2 tho to get any deal done.

Laine would be a great for the Islanders but no way Columbus is retaining 50% at this point, maybe $1M retention.

laugh Patrik Laine is a basket case, he wasn't happy in Winnipeg or Columbus, The dude is made of glass he's basically missed 25% of his games the last couple of seasons. He's not going to be happy no matter where he goes.

A buyout literally costs less over the length of the deal. As others have said, I'd consider the deal, but not at half retention. That's a wild ask.

Please point out the lie here. Who's got the better short and long term future as of today and now?
