Seems like a great fit. Doesn't appear that the retention is needed.

1st is the tops it will take to get Monahan I think, unless there is a bidding war. I would try to squeeze a late pick back if I were Winnipeg as well but this may be the cost.

Both sides accept.
Monahan would be a great addition to the Winnipeg Jets.
Would anyone agree?

I seem to be in the minority here but I just don't see Monahan having first round value.

Compare his built, stats, and leadership to that of Elias Lindholm. Monahan comes at half the price tag... As a rental, I'd say that Monahan is potentially worth more than Lindholm given the year they're having and the cap hit. As a sign and trade, that'd be a different story maybe.

Now nobody would argue that Lindholm is not worth at least a first as a rental.

well yes, but your premise that monahan is better than lindholm is ridiculous.

With how the Jets are playing, they have no incentive to consider overpaying for bad players to be their healthy scratch.

Monahan flat out isn't anywhere close to replacing anyone in Winnipeg's top 9 and would be in for the fight of his life to replace someone on the 4th line. He just isn't needed and flat out worthless to Winnipeg.

When did I say he was better? I explicitly said: 'compare the built, stats [this year], and leadership", and "as a sign and trade, that'd be a different story maybe". This acknowledge that he's somewhat inferior. But GM have to optimize under constraints, and the cap hit of Monahan makes him a very attractive rental. And people tend to forget that a late first is not worth that much more than an early second round pick...

We could compare Monahan's trade value to one's of Copp and Stastny. Different skillset I agree but I feel like a lot of fans forget one thing about those comparison, salary. Why would Monahan fetch anything close to what the others brought? Cause he's paid about 29% of what Stastny was at the time of trade and 60% of Copp. He obviously isn't a comparable when it comes to health but who cares if you're taking him for -at most- 30 games? Health clauses have already been seen (Upgrades to X is player Y plays 50% of playoff games) so I don't really see where a GM would be unwilling to part ways with a good prospect and a highly conditioned pick.
Pretty sure he fetches at least a conditional 1st based upon other previous deals.
