Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2024
Published: Jan. 13, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Jenner, Boone
Additional Details:
Jenner is rarely playing a full season anymore and is 30. Comes as a good salary and hard player to play against. Hard to trade away a captain as well.
CBJ
  1. Söderblom, Elmer
  2. Sprong, Daniel
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Sprong has impressed but is given limited minutes. Soderblom is a big body with potential.
2.
DET
  1. 2025 4th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Dumping Copp but has some value with a young team like Chicago who will have lots of Cap Space and gives a veteran presence.
CHI
  1. Copp, Andrew ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Veleno has replaced Copp and would prefer the cap space. If he doesn’t get traded I think a buyout could be looked at.
3.
SJS
  1. Määttä, Olli
  2. 2024 4th round pick (DAL)
4.
PHI
  1. Aston-Reese, Zach
  2. Viro, Eemil
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (DET)

Not the kind of package we would be interested in for Jenner.

Trade #1 Columbus passes, I don't see Sprong being traded to a Non-Playoff team.

Trade #2 Andrew Copp blocks a trade to the 2nd worst team in the NHL, And no i don't see Yzerman retaining 3 x $1,500,000 on him either.

Trades #3 and #4 are redundant, I don't see how they remotely benefit us.

1. Thought was Sprong then gets traded from Columbus for more.
2. Possibly true, but keeps him close to home. $1.5 will mean nothing with the salary cup going up.
3. Kunin can chip in some goals, plays hard, and isn’t afraid to drop em.
4. Seeler can eat 18minutes a night and take some responsibilities from Seider going against top talent. Also hard to play against and an upgrade over our other RD in my opinion. Believe he will hold good value at the TD from his play and cap hit mix.

Jenner's deal makes him really easy to trade directly to a contender, most of whom would pay through the teeth to get a 2C who can score 25-30 a season, wins 55%+ of faceoffs, and is tough to play against. I don't see Columbus sending him to a playoff-bubble team and acting as a middle-man for a UFA when we could send him directly to a Cup favorite for (likely) more than a 1st + top prospect.

And that's assuming Columbus even entertains moving him, which at the moment, we don't remotely need to or want to.

Also: "Jenner is rarely playing a full season anymore and is 30" makes him sound injury-prone and old. Dude could easily play another 7-8 seasons, and of the 951 players to play a single minute in the NHL last year, only 116 played all 82 games. The only reason he's out right now is because he took a slapshot straight to the jaw bone. Let's not start an injury-prone narrative where it doesn't exist, he's not Laine.

I don't get this. You retain and then pay to dump Copp only to pay and replace him with a lesser player in Kunin? Then since you traded a defenseman, you pay and trade for one who isn't much better than the one you traded away? Sure, Seeler hits and blocks more shots but he also takes a ton more penalties. I'm all for adding physicality since we are the 4th least physical team in the league according to hit stats, but adding one that is basically in the box at least once a game isn't going to make this team much better.
Columbus is not trading their captain. He would be a great add for any team but the price would be too much.

We had that with Bertuzzi, same thing, slap shot to the hand, back for a few games and another shot in the same hand.

Maata and ZAR to Edmonton makes a lot of sense imo, don't know how they could fit them in though with their constant cap issues.

I'm willing to bet if Detroit was willing to retain $1-1.5M on Copp they'd get a lot of suitors willing to pay a decent asset or two for him, can think of a lot of contenders that'd have interest in a mid six forward who'd be a good two-way 3C at that $4ishM price point.

Columbus is not trading Jenner for that underwhelming return, ultimately he's probably just not available at all.

That might get Seeler but Philly isn't selling yet, could maybe get a late 2nd for Seeler too so they might get better offers then this.
