Pure Rental Trade Assessment

Description
Pls comment with your respectable & constructive comments, like you always do. My thought with Byram is he's on a relatively cheap deal this season AND next, so CMac should take advantage of a strong starting D core while feasible under the cap & without having to trade anyone else away to make room. He can still flip Byram for a 2C Summer 2025 and will have extracted the maximum value out of the cap situation by doing so. The high rental price ensures COL outbids any other team (WPG) for Lindholm's services, & to reward MacK for his hard fitness work, playing mega minutes & hodling up the team bus every night :D

Its two 1sts, a 2nd, a & a RyJo cap dump for Lindholm

Trades
COL
  1. Lindholm, Elias
Additional Details:
EL is a pure rental, mercenary; no shame in that. Avs need the 1st to deal for a stop-gap 2C this summer. These are the Avs' three top prospects. Keeping Byram while on a cheap contract maximizes his value before he can demand a bigger AAV. This is a high price to pay for a rental but fortunately for COL these players fit CGY's needs while still leaving the Avs contending window open. Yes, they kick the 2C solution down the road, but thankfully the NHL allocates them additional draft picks each new year to help with this problem.
CGY
  1. Behrens, Sean [Reserve List]
  2. Gulyayev, Mikhail [Reserve List]
  3. Johansen, Ryan
  4. Ritchie, Calum [Reserve List]
  5. 2025 3rd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Behrens fills a starting Dman spot as soon as this spring. As CGY might lose half its D core from start of 23-24 season, this fits an immediate need. MG is the long term, high ceiling D prospect; he'll take a few more years to ripen, but is already performing well at the KHL level this season as a younger player. CR is a solid top six C prospect that is 2-3 yrs away from a starting role; he's so far successfully navigated a shoulder injury in his draft eligible year to remain a top CHL prospect that is back on track to the NHL. The 3rd is to pls take RyJo for cap purposes, namaste.

Well thought out argument.

I don't know if Calgary does this or not.

But you certainly presented a valid case. 😁

I'd love to see Lindholm as 2C on Colorado. 🙂

This is an easy no for Colorado. Both Ritchie and Gulyayev have increased their value since being drafted. They're looking very good and are more valuable than any first the team holds.

With Calgary having the ability to they should be retaining on Lindholm, Tanev, Hanifin, I don't think that means they will because for whatever reason Flames ownership is find paying Sutter 4M a year not to coach here but not eating a fraction of a salary for 3 months.

If that were the case I would be shocked if Conroy couldn't get a 1st in any deal for any of the above mentioned guys.

Ritchie OR Behrans + Johanson + 1st for Lindholm @ 2.45M

At his full cap hit, Johanson + Ritchie OR Behrans + a pick.

Everything you said here is a good thought.

While I obviously don't know for sure what the team is thinking, I'm pretty confident that Ritchie is off the table for any rental (even Lindholm). A 1st + Behrens + Johansen is doable though. No retention necessary, but will take it if offered.

If the Flames are gutting their defence as expected I would be disappointed if Behrens, Johanson and a 1st were on the table and Conroy didn't take it, I like the framework of that deal a lot. Ritchie is a stud and likely a pipe dream without Calgary adding in the deal.

Such an easy no for the Avs. '24 1st plus one of Behrens/Olausson/Gulyayev plus RyJo is as much as the Avs should be paying and even then I'm not sure it's worth it.

I think your reasoning makes sense. However, the trade for Colorado does not. I'd like lindholm. But Ritchie and Gulyayev are the avs best prospects by a mile. Without them, that cupboard is pretty bare. I think Ritchie is already projected to be the 2C of the future. I think prospects the avs would be more likely to give up would be behrens, and Olausson. Maybe not the most value on those two. But I'd imagine they are the only ones the Avs would be willing to give up.

Two firsts (Gulyayev & Ritchie), a second (Behrens), a THIRD, and a 'RyJo cap dump' for 35-50 games of Lindholm......it gets worse the more you look at it.

You can’t value a guy as worth a 1st round pick just because he was drafted in the 1st round.. neither Gulyayev or Ritchie are worth a 1st round pick.

After a player is drafted, his draft round is irrelevant.

Feel like Colorado would just be smarter to spend 2 1sts and go get Boone Jenner from Columbus and roll with the guy under contract for longer and cheaper

Before the injury, services had Ritchie ranked in the top 10. The Avs took a value gamble on him playing through it and have seemed to win so far. So, to further your argument, Ritchie is outperforming his draft slot

Maybe, and I've made a Jenner roster, but there are pitfalls to him as well. Lindholm is simply better than Jenner and that's what this roster focuses on.

If the Avs were guaranteed to win the Cup, it wouldn't matter. Or, as Eric Lacroix said: "what would you be willing to do if you knew you were guaranteed to win?"

If I'm being forced to cheer for Zach Parise, then I want Lindholm, lol.
