Hawks pass. They aren't taking a $6M cap hit for a 4th and 2nd at a position they already have a logjam of young players and prospects

It boils down to how much they think one more 2nd rounder is worth, and my guess is "not $6,000,000"

Very unlikely. Would be different if he fills an open space on the roster and there is a chance to play him every game, boost his value and flip him at the deadline with 50% retention but in this case, the last thing we need is another LHD guy

Yeah it feels like the window for taking on guys who are (close to) pure salary dumps will close this summer. At some point you have to put the younger guys out there and leave them on the ice.

My understanding is that even though Schmidt is a LHD he has experience playing the right side as well, so in the event Murphy is moved at the TDL I could see the Hawks doing this BUT only if they move Murphy.

That depends. I think KD will probably continue to take one or two year cap dumps until that cap space starts to get filled up more with contracts like Bedsy and Korch's second deals. Unless maybe he wants to fill that cap space with a long term acquisition or two. But i kind of doubt that is gonna happen. He isn't likely to trade for RFA status guys and most of the UFA status guys are risky given their age. Some of the UFA's aren't worth enough to even overpay them, and some of them will more than likely be looking to join a contender over a rebuild in the later years of their careers. But I'm sure the prospect of playing with Bedard on a short term deal will be appealing to some guys looking to revitalize their career. So, we'll see. But if we can get valuable assets to take on short term deals, I don't see why not.

Schmidt plays on the right side, not the left. He'd plug right in on the Hawks 3rd pair as their RD replacing the stellar Zaitsev/Tinordi duo. I think the Hawks make this trade if it's offered.

He plays both sides. But, yeah, it should be a concern with him at all.

pick is going to wrong way on the penguins trade.

WPG dumping cap.
Pens don't really need to tie the cap up there.
I'm not opposed to helping WPG with it's cap issue, but I'm not paying to do it.
Especially if the resign Jake, the cap will be tight.
