Calm Down

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2024
Published: Feb. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is purely for discussion out of curiosity. Florida and Pittsburgh are in a similar situation with their top players Guentzel and Reinhart.

I'll concede given his 200ft game, Reinhart is a little more desirable than Jake, but overall, while very different style players, they're both on a similar level in terms of their levels of production.

Let's say that Jake doesn't want to return to Pittsburgh and Sam doesn't want to return to Florida for whatever reasons, but they're open to extensions with the other's teams. This question is for both Pens and Florida fans; would you do a swap?

Depends on what Dubas decides to do at the deadline. If were planning on selling off some pieces I wouldnt do this

I think Reinhart fits Florida and Guentzel fits Pittsburgh.

I don't think a trade would benefit either player.

I dunno. When you have guys like Sid and Barkov, skill guys like Jake and Reinhart could fit right along.

No, not selling and I know I'm proposing kind of an unusual situation because FLA is in no danger of missing the playoffs so rocking the boat wouldn't make much sense, but situations like this are rare in general.

It's still a very lateral move. If they're going to move on from Guentzel it'll be for assets not a rental!

Remember when Pens and Flyers made a trade in '92?

Pens got Tocchet and Flyers got Recchi?

That trade worked out for both teams.

Shanahan traded to Detroit. Whalers got Primeau, Coffey, 1st.

Primeau for Brind'Amour.

Can the Pens afford to give Sam an 11m extension?

Sam Reinhart is on pace for 62 Goals and 104 Points, I'm pretty sure that Bill Zito will keep Reinhart over Jake Guentzel. His value right now is at an all time high.

I know its wrong, probably, but I just can't bring myself to value a Pens forward not named Crosby or Malkin fairly. All I see are Dupuis's and Kunitz's. They could play an entire season without those guys in the lineup and I'd still be like "Ah they're just a product of Sid/Geno...."

Just for that bias alone, I think Reinhart is better and more valuable.

And yes I totally understand that if Cole Caufield had the stats Guentzel has had, he'd be considered a star player without any question. Like I said, I know its a bias.

I am a big fan of Reinharts game and he definitely brings something to the table we are missing, but I don't see why he would want to sign long term in Pittsburgh and not Florida. Their window is open and will be open for longer, while ours is rapidly closing.

That's not what this is asking though. This is assuming Reinhart does not want to stay.

This has been a thing that has been disproved time and time again. Through Jake's tenure as a Penguin, he's had many long stretches where Sid and/or Geno have been injured and still maintained his production.

I'm not saying this in an argumentative way, but if the idea that you can place anyone next to Sid or Geno and turn them into a 30-40 goal scorer EVERY year, then they'd be spending $2M a year on every top-six winger. It takes a certain skill set and certain abilities to be able to play with Sid and Geno.

And FWIW, Dupuis and Kunitz never put up Jake's numbers, and they had Sid in his prime years.

Florida is 100% a cup contender, While Pittsburgh is on the decline and close to a massive rebuild, I seriously doubt that Reinhart wants to leave Florida for the likes of Pittsburgh.

Dude, I'm not sure if you're just trying to be difficult. I'm not talking about if we can see why or why not. I'm simply posing a hypothetical situation, so this idea is within the confines of this situation. It's not rocket science.

Are you really just trying to be difficult like the other guy? I'm posing a hypothetical situation, not discussing why or if either player wants to leave or stay. This shouldn't take critical thinking on your part.

Yep I agree. Its just one of those things we'll never be able to collectively shake for some reason.
