Devils supposedly entertained the idea of trading back (they believed Seattle may take Luke Hughes). There was a rumor right before draft that San Jose tried to trade up from #7 to #4…but some countered that and said it was another team.

I don’t remember exactly now, but I remember them showing them after Anaheim picked and Jarmo looked pissy. Like more than usual. And there’d been a lot of smoke around MacTavish being their choice, like how everyone figured they’d go Will Smith this past summer til Anaheim went Carlsson. Actually, it’s funny how often the rumors have been that Columbus and Anaheim were targeting the same players and Anaheim just always happened to have the better pick.
