Players I think we should target this year

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2024
Published: Feb. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't think we should be big spenders this deadline,
I'm actually partial to being sellers but if we are still in a playoff spot these are players I think we could get for cheap that could help.

Mostly looking to add depth forward to the bottom six.

Obviously only one or two adds would be made and that also depends on injuries for us.

Rumours have it we are in on Vatrano and Chychrun and possibly Hanifin, I would rather just make depth adds and let our guys develop.
Trades
1.
BUF
Not my first choice but someone who could help the fee side of the game, can also play center. Likely costs a late round pick if they want to move him.
    2.
    DAL
If Dallas needed to move him to make some salary room. Good penalty killer and really good on face-offs. Salary is a bit much so maybe a bit of retention needed, would depend on the deal.
Not sure how the cake him since I see alot of trades with him moving for nothing or Dallas adding a slight pick to take him.
      3.
      EDM
Very unlikely that Edmonton moves him but if they for some reason need to make space he would be a great add. Really strong defensive play to go with size.
        4.
        NSH
Very physical and strong defensive forward. His physical play would be a great add as we are currently 29th in the league in hits. He has shown in the past that he can score a bit.
          5.
          NYI
Adding him for his physicality and leadership, wouldn't pay much but again we aren't very physical so it would be welcome.
            6.
            NYR
I'll probably get moved reviews on this one. He does make too much money for a bit too long but his two way play and face-off ability would be a great add for this team.
              7.
              SJS
Sturm is one of the best face-off guys in the league, something we are middle of the pack at. He's play in his own zone is also good.
                8.
                WSH
Really good penalty killer and very physical forward. Can play centre as well.

Girgs would cost AT LEAST a mid-round pick
Sabres don’t have to- or want to- move him
Unless he asks out, we aren’t just gonna “sell low” to get him off the roster - that makes no sense for us

Well he is a pending UFA. He could potentially leave for nothing. So no the Sabres don't have to move him. They can re-sign him or let him walk as well. It wouldn't really be "selling low" to trade a 4th line pending UFA that makes 2.5M against the cap for a pick. I could see maybe a 4th but don't think he would get much more than that. Sundkvist and Namestnikov both got 4ths when they were traded.

I don't see Edmonton moving Foegele, but he may be available in the summer as a UFA. They're facing a bit of a pinch next year with bonuses that roll over.

There’s a difference between what you guys would give up to get him & what we would accept to let him go

He wears an “A” for us & is a leader in our locker room,
                  that has value to us
There's absolutely no need for us to just dump him for a pick
Only way we move him is if he asks to go
                  Same with Okposo, our Captain

That's fair. I appreciate holding onto a guy for leadership purposes.

He’s just not a typical “4th line guy” we are looking to dump
So no offense, but your logic just didn’t hold up in this particular circumstance

I don't dislike any of the targeted guys I just wouldn't really give much for any of them I'm not sure how much any of them will really add to the team.

Detroit has pretty good depth, don't see where or how any of these guys would really fit.

They like Foegele and think they will extend him.

Yes but most are offensive minded players. I think we need more physicality and defensive minded players mixed in.

Most would be cheap and just slight improvements in areas where I think we lack.

Faksa and Dadonov are most likely to be moved in a deal for a top four defenseman for salary purposes. Sticking a draft pick to Faksa to clear cap space is a bad look for Nill as he was a cheap buyout this past offseason. Same as Suter

I would personally take him for free but would like a bit of retention, that would be ideal anyways.
