Who should the jets target tanev vs walker discussion

Description
With the jets trading for Monahan it leaves them rook to make more moves as they have the cap space. A lock down 3rd pair rhd would be the top of my list on what they jets should be looking for along side a physical presence forward. This sparks the debate on who they should target?

There are 2 mainstream options in tanev and walker. They may go for a option that may be cheaper (dumba, carrier, Barrie, seeler, peeke, Lyubushkin etc) but for the sake of this agm I will explore the tanev vs walker angle. I most likely will make another agm focusing on some other potentially cheap options that were mentioned as well. Jets have the cap space at the tdl for both unretained so being over the cap is not important for this agm regardless of who they get.

So what does each of them bring
Tanev 34 year old 6'2 right shot 4.5m ufa 2024
1 goal 8 assists 9 points in 47 games +9
38 sog 20 hits 142 blk 19:41 ice time a game average
Staple on a pk with the blocks not really a major contributor for offense at 5v5 no pp time
Calgary looking for a 2nd and other asset/prospect

Walker 29 year old 5'11 right shot 2.65m ufa 2024
5 goals 13 assists 18 points in 51 games +8
84 sog 61 hits 72 blk 19:33 ice time a game average
Plays some pk but not the major guy, no consistent pp time but major player at 5v5 at offense and defensive play.
Philly is looking for a 1st round pick for walker, he may go for less but that's the price set

Looking at them side by side both have their advantages (tanev blocks, pk, fearless) (walker 5v5 play, secondary scoring from back end, cheaper contract). It's not hard to see why these guys are part of the rentals available and how they help a playoff team improve.

One thing I like about these players is that neither one is a player that costs an insane amount but both are players that can fit right into a contender. Not always about getting the best overall player at the deadline (hanifin, Chychrun, orlov etc) but the player that fits and makes the team better without changing the chemistry of the team.

All in all I do like walker better for the 5v5 play and contract (maybe another move again? Probably not but leaves room) but again he is slightly more expensive in asking price between 2nd and another asset for tanev and a 1st for walker.

Let me know what you think is the better player and who's the better acquisition. Interesting to see who these players go to and if the jets are a team that could go after either player.

Thanks

Would be nice but definitely not really possible. Brandon tanev can probably let Chris about winnipeg and sell it to him. All in all both tanevs play a nhl playoff style that all teams could really use. Will be interesting to see if the jets look at him or one of the other options I mentioned in the description.

That Montreal second is a top-40 pick, so it's a powerful asset for you at the trade deadline. Just sayin'.

Tanev plays a more playoff style game but he may have more suitors as a result. Walker is definitely no slouch either and is more efficient 5v5 has mor sog and hits and good amount of blocks. Way I see it is tanev is an elite pk and block dman but walker is really good in multiple areas but isn't elite but better at more (5v5, offense, physical play, etc). Probably why their price is so similar.

Jets would likely keep that second and trade 2025 2nd and prospects to make a trade. Any team trading for either is paying a 2nd as well but they won't have a 2nd in the top 40. Jets would not pay more than other teams in that sense. Just because we have an early 2nd doesn't mean we pay a 2nd. Not all 2nds have the same value.

Am I the only one who simply doesn't believe Sean Walker is what Philly is showcasing him as? I get the RHD market is non existent but geez.

He wasn't terrible on LA more just stuck in the system where he didn't get to play to his strengths. This deadline is just underwhelming all around so it's not out of the blue saying what walker could bring. Just unfortunate for teams buying that they don't get more for their assets this year.

Would definitely be Tanev but his injury history is concerning.

Really think they need an upgrade on DeMelo, that's probably Tanev but again I'd be worried about him getting injured.

As much as I think the Jets need a top 4 D upgrade, Nate Schmidt being a good guy in the room makes it tough to do.

I understand what schmidt brings but ultimately it's about icing the best team for a stanley cup so if adding tanev and sitting schmidt does that it has to happen. Jets need a legit top 4 dman or pionk to wake up and play like one. I love schmidt but rn he's the 6th dman and improving the defense means he's #7. He could be #6 again next year with tanev as a rental but it needs to happen as likely playing stars or avs first round.

Walker is arguably the best PK D in the entire NHL. But that doesn't translate from system to system. Walker is better at pretty much everything but id see why the jets would have wanted someone like tanev more
