That's not a great add for a tanking team. If the Habs had not traded Monahan, I would be all over this, but RyJo is just gonna take up space next year on a team selling their vets.

The concept of swapping young players with Buffalo in Mittelstadt and Byram is amazing, the Sabres don’t need another LHD. I know one of Power, Dahlin or Samuelsson usually play the off-side, but adding another lefty just doesn’t make sense to me, even if Byram can play the right side as well. But if Buffalo doesn’t care about that, this deal makes a lot of sense

When the Sabres won the presidents cup in 06/07 they had two RHD on the roster, one of which (Mike Card) played 4 games. People really over blow the ability of NHL defensemen being able to play on their off hand. A lot of offensive defensemen (like Dalin) prefer playing on their off hand as outs their stick in the middle of the ice and opens them up for one-timers. It also opens up the passing lanes a bit more on the breakout.

Sabres clearly disagree with you
They even broke up the Samuelsson-Dahlin pair, which was great last year, to start the season

We aren’t trading Mitts for Byram

Sabres DO CARE about matching a righty with a lefty though,
so we aren’t gonna do this proposal

PLUS,
the Avs can NOT fit Mitts with the new contract he’ll get under their Cap moving forward

This trade works for NEITHER side

Been seeing a lot of Allen for RyJo swaps on here lately. Did I miss something in the news lately???

From MTLs perspective, I have zero interest in RyJo. His $4mil next year has ZERO appeal to it. I don't see this as another potential Monahan situation, where MTL hopes RyJo can turns things around and they flip him next year. This would be just another Armia/Dvorak like contract clogging up MTLs lineup, preventing Habs prospect from more playing time.

MTL can just run out the clock with Allen.... there's not that much pressure to move him other than Allen is probably unhappy with his situation. Not only that, if retaining salary (on any player now with MTL only having 1 retention slot left) doesn't yield at least something of value, then don't bother, save the retention spot for something else. Habs could be a broker for a 3way trade and get better value than this.
