Canes get a top 9 forward with some term

Created by: gumshoeismygod
Team: 2023-24 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2024
Published: Feb. 19, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
From today's article in the Athletic, it seems like Don Waddell is trying to target a forward with some term left to take on a middle 6 role. First name that came to mind was Mathieu Joseph, was always a fan of his game. Having a strong year for Ottawa and has a couple of years left at a reasonable cap hit.

joseph is for sure a good trade target but i think the price would be two 2nds and maybe another late pick like a sixth

It was hard for me to get an idea of his value, not a lot of people talking about potential Mathieu Joseph trades online (shocking, I know). What do you think he's worth?

Jospeh's not worth it. His elevated production comes from being shelter with better linemates than he'd get anywhere else. Plus, some sens fans are here trying to tell you he's worth more than that, when the Flyers were asking for a 1st + to take him at the beginning of the year.

Well context is important regarding the trade rumors at the beginning of the year. It's not that Joseph is so bad he'd need a pick attached to get off his contract, it's that Ottawa was so desperate to shed salary that they would've had to do that regardless of who it is they were trading. I think Joseph is definitely worth a mid-round pick in terms of his talent.

Talent, maybe, but he's still not worth that deal and that deal has term. I'd much prefer to look elsewhere and find someone better. Maybe I'd move a 5th for Joseph, but he wasn't good enough for one team with Stanley Cup aspirations in Tampa, don't think he should be an option for the Canes when the Canes now are deeper than the Lightning were

Agree to disagree then. What forwards do you think fit the bill in terms of what Waddell is looking for?

I just don't see the Sens having any reason to move Joseph at this point. yeah there was all that at the start of the season but the picture was very different back then. I'm sure Staios would rather have an effective player now than maybe a potential NHLer in 3-4 years

Some players take longer to develop, Joseph played for Tampa when he was 22y-25y. He's certainly a better player now than then.

I don't disagree, but the Canes are also deeper than Tampa were. To put this a better way, there's no fit for Joseph. He's not better than Necas or Jarvis. He's not better than Svechnikov, Bunting or Teravainen. He's more expensive than Martinook and Fast, and he's both not as good and more expensive than Noesen. So, he's a pressbox option for the Canes when Waddell is looking for middle six scoring.

Sens need more 2-way forwards and Joseph is their best one. Won't be moving him.

I don’t see a world where the Sens, one of the worst teams in the NHL, see a veteran 3rd liner as untouchable.

Joseph is still young, and signed for 2 more years after this season on a great contract. There is no need to move him. Is he untouchable? No. But a team would have to offer something that makes the Sens a better team to move him. A heck of a lot more than a 3rd.
