Mantha might get a first on his own. The caps likely pass here honestly.

Don't see the rangers giving that much up for that return. Not huge on the Devils deal - I think that Mantha and Lindgren would get more separately or they'd get a better package elsewhere. NAK might return less but it's negligible the difference between a fourth and a sixth rounder, which may be more realistic.

I would be shocked if Mantha got a 1st. Decent enough player on an almost certainly unsustainable shooting heater.

I think he more likely returns a second rounder, maybe with another later pick attached. But he has not only been a great goal scorer, but everything is clicking for him. I seriously think people underestimate (and I used to be in this crowd, too) how much Laviolette destroyed his game. He's a completely different player under Carbery, and with how youth has flourished under Ruff in NJ, he would probably light it up next to guys like Hughes and Hischier and Bratt. It's hard to want to see your team sell a guy on pace for 30 goals, 55ish points for anything less than a first rounder. I wouldn't be upset if Mantha was extended for a year or two if they don't get an offer that makes sense.

I hear this a lot about “everything is clicking” and 9/10 times it’s associated with the inflated perception that comes with a shooting heater. Easy to overlook the bad and overrate the good when 25% of a players shots are ending up in the back of the net. When that returns to normal too, so does the perception

Yeah it's an easy Rangers decline. Subtract Jones and the 2nd and you're honestly a lot closer.

I don't think so on his own honestly, and I love his turn around this year. but I thought the combo of him and Lindgren was good enough for a 1st and a couple B list prospects

The issue before with Mantha wasn't that he was unskilled and that he wasn't good enough to be a top 6 winger. He was playing in a system with a coach who gave him no opportunities and misused him grossly. He's had these tools and he's finally been put in a position to succeed. Even if it's just a season long "heater," the only way a team acquires Mantha is to pay for the player he is right now, which is a 30 goal scorer, and those aren't exactly in abundance. Someone who misses out on Guentzel is going to look at Mantha as the consolation prize. Or, he'll stay in DC and that's honestly fine with me. He's still only 29 and he's always had elite talent, just couldn't finish to save his life. He's figured it out.

A 30 goal scorer is hard to come by at the deadline. Honestly, with the direction the caps are trending, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get inked to a one or two year extension rather than being moved.

so that would pretty much be Pacioretty half retained and Edmundson for free. That's generally not how that works at the deadline

If this team can squeak into the playoffs, you gotta try and make some noise. They're 6 points back with three games in hand on the lightning for WC2. Crazy things can happen.

It’s a lot closer than if you added a 2nd and Jones. Edmundson would be an overpaired 7D rental on the Rangers and Pacioretty has a really significant injury history spanning at least the last 3 seasons. Those aren’t valuable trade assets.

Yeah I consider Edmundson a negative value so technically that's an overpay. And that's about what Patches is worth now.

Though I'd be happy to swap the pick for Goodrow.
