Description
if canucks trade pettersson i would bet they want high end roster pieces coming back. tkachuk trade would be the best comp

my best guess about what the canucks would look for if they trade pettersson this offseason. basically, they need an elite piece coming back. likely that would be a winger, since i dont think any team out there wants to trade their first line centre for a different first line centre.

then there would need to be another complimentary piece included as well to offset value differences

i think given age and positional value, pettersson would be higher value than rantenan as a trade piece, seeing as centre is colorados biggest need. im not sure how valuable dumping johansen is but my though was byram + johansenat almost $8 million = hoglander at 1.1 million

Yeah I think they are pretty equal players but center is more valuable so we’d probably have to add a 1st. That said I don’t see us having a want to move mikko at all

a team that needs scoring should add a 100 point player

not at the expense of your overall team. If 100 point players were all that was needed to win cups leafs and oilers wouldnt be such disappointments.

i have no idea where you guys got the idea that Rantanen was a trade target. it's not happening,
this is one of the worst trades I've seen in exchange for petey

the tkachuk trade was widely viewed as a win for calgary at the time. hubderdeau having an unprecedented drop off was nearly impossible to see coming.

Not a win on its own, but because it made the best out of a bad situation.
Calgary got 2 pending UFA's and were lucky(unsure) to be able to convince them to sign extensions.
They easily could have walked away with only a protected 1st and a middling prospect.

If you're comparing to the Tkachuk trade your proposals are flawed because you're targeting younger core players under contract or team control. That makes it a bad comp.

not a bad comp at all. calgary got high end roster players back. canucks would target the same

High end roster players with 1 year until UFA, not RFA's or players already signed long term.
Even if you assume any pending UFA will sign, there's a big difference between Huberdeau @ $10M until his late 30's and Thomas @ $8M until his early 30's.

i have several trades in here which target UFAs with only one year left. marner, rantanen, ehlers, chychrun, pionk. i also have several trades in here where i am targeting players who are 30+ and have already signed those huge money deals that weegar and huberdeau ended up signing (pulock, parayko, spurgeon, foresberg, o'reilly).

as well, any trade where i thought the contract the player had was part of their value (JEEK, Tkachuk, Barzal, svechnikov, thomas, suzuki) i modified the return to reflect that. no first round pick included, and in some cases i didnt even include a prospect, since i think the value of already being signed meant those pieces werent needed.

Avs decline. I won't say it's not an interesting idea and I think if anything it probably would start with Rants & Petey but I don't see the difference as being Byram even with a 'cap dump' in RyJo attached.
