it would be dumb to trade Laine at his lowest value. I would want a 1st + for Laine, but he isnt worth that now so we should keep him and hope he can find his game with us or at least have his value bounce back a bit. You can have Elvis though

In a vacuum, its probably at or near FMV. I'd still want to at least get a 1st for Laine if we consider moving him.

The issue is we cant really move on from Elvis unless we have a back-up plan at G. Tarry has been on a good run, but he's had a lot of injuries that keep seeming to set him back, and I'd prefer Jet Greaves get another year in CLE.

My feeling is still Elvis for Campbell, 1-for-1. Mutual interest on reclamation projects, CBJ save a good chunk of actual dollars, and if it still doesnt work out, we at least know he'll clear waivers. Otherwise, I'm just not sure I'd want CBJ to pay the price to move Elvis, who has looked markedly better this year, but markedly better still amounts to mediocre.

I mean, I'd largely take Campbell's resume over, or at worst, near equal to Elvis', minus the past season+ in EDM (which, to be fair, is an excuse I've heard about Elvis's last season+ with CBJ). Elvis runs with a 3.76 GAA, and a .889 s% (66 GP), to Jack's 3.96 and .881 s% (41 GP) over the same period; and, 3.17 to .905 for Elvis to 2.76 and .909 for Jack for their careers.

A smaller cap hit, $4.5M saved in actual cash, only a two-year age difference, a not-pissy attitude, and a locker room that hasn't gotten tired of the antics.. I also imagine no NTC concerns, since both players would likely welcome exits out of their current situation. EDM situation is similar - nobody is paying for that contract, not sure EDM (in a win-now situation) wants to give up trade assets just to sell him to AZ, and worst case, you're getting ****ed in a buy-out or having to bury him regardless. Maybe there is an asset or two on the fringe, but it just feels like it makes sense a la the ol'd Horton-for-Clarkson trading of headaches.

I also just really don't believe there is the kind of market for Elvis that some people think there is, unless you want it to hurt. If it was as easy as "trade him for future considerations," or put him on waivers, then you would've seen it happen already, most likely.

But I also get it - JD said no big moves, and I want Jet to be in the AHL as long as he is waivers exempt.

Nah that’s terrible asset management. Campbell looked good behind one of the best defenses in the league in Toronto. Elvis has been behind a bottom 5 defense in the league the past few years. That’s the difference. Campbell isn’t even an nhl caliber goalie right now and Elvis is at least average. The rumored price to take on Campbell is two firsts. If jarmo were still here and made that trade it would be the worst trade of his career. Jackets can retain the same amount a Campbell buy out would cost and get an actual asset back

GSAx/60 is the closest thing to an equalizer as we have.

Elvis' last 3 seasons: -0.025, -0.996, +0.072
Jack's last 3 seasons: -0.810, -0.542, -0.049

Jack has been trending downward, and it's unlikely he even reaches league average again...but Elvis hasn't been anything but league average (at best) in...well, ever. 2020-21 was his best season GSAx/60-wise, his 0.923 SV% season in 2019-20 he had a -0.073 GSAx/60. League average is still valuable, and he's reasonably consistent minus last year's outlier, but for $4.5M in actual cash saved plus whatever assets we could extort from Edmonton in the swap...that's a deal I'd take every time.

We have a better NHL goalie in the system already (Greaves), and could easily sign a replacement-level/league average goaltender in free agency for cheap if we wanted to bury Campbell in the AHL anyway.

I’m with @CaseyFlyman here.

It’s a frustrating situation we are in, regardless. Jack may cost two 1sts to take, but that’s likely with nothing (or little) going back to EDM. I think we could probably get something out of EDM to swap Elvis, and I don’t think CBJ are so much worse.

TLDR; I just wouldn’t call it a fireable offense if the trade was made. Reasonable minds can differ on it.
