By adding 50% retention on Markstrom and then another asset from Calgary.

A 9 overall for a 1 year, 35 year old goalie is unprecedented.
Calgary takes us to the cleaners on this deal.

Add Rasmus Andersson (and probably another asset going to Calgary).
Or switch the pick from a 2024 1st to a 2025 2nd.

Ah yes and then you can add Simon Nemec (and probably another asset going to New Jersey)

Then take Anderson out and switch the pick to a 2nd. And if that doesn't work, we'll go find a different goalie.

If I’m NJ I thank the lucky stars I missed out on Markstrom already and move to Saros.

I'm so glad we didn't make the move. He's been an 0.878 since the rumours started and is now injured.

There isn't a single asset calgary has that Nemec would be in a conversation for

Maybe you can swing that trade if Conroy had a lobotomy first lol

Good luck finding another goalie my friend im sure those teams won’t bend your desperate team over a barrel too lol

The desperation goes the other way when said goalies are 1 year away from leaving for nothing

We have too many assets for grabs and there are plenty of 'big game' goalies available. We'll be fine.

You say that like it matters if he leaves for nothing lol

He can absolutely hold the fort with Wolf next year and mentor him to be the future starter not to mention there will be a team that can use him at the deadline or the draft that isn’t the devils.

No one in Calgary is desperate for a thing right now, the Devils on the other hand are going to have to make moves because their championship window is opening.

I'd prefer NJD to operate like Tampa.

Go after guys in their 20s, not 30s. NJD is a lot like 2016-17 tampa who missed the playoffs.

Go get 25 year old Miller, or 29 year old McDonagh, or 20 year old Sergachev.

Yes, sell the Boyle and Bishop.

Don't give up your Point and Vasy who weren't studs yet at that time for win now moves.

Then when the time is right, then you go after cheap affordable contracts. And don't be afraid to ship guys out as they get older

I think for New Jersey that’s the best method but you have to take risks because playing it safe with the level of talent they have is a mistake.

If they go into next season with a tandem of Allen and Kahkonen then Fitz should be fired.

I think a statement like that in a vacuum is bad.

If Allen and Kahkonen play excellent down the stretch, then what?

If the prices are ridiculous, the prices are ridiculous. If more value can be found elsewhere in cap and in assets on filling other holes, like 2LD or a replacement for Michael Mcleod, I would prefer he do that.

Fitzgerald should be making every effort to get a good goalie at a fair price. If he has to overpay slightly, sure. But there comes a price when it's simply not worth it anymore.

There’s a huge question mark on Allen and Kahkonen considering they’ve been some of the worst goalies in the league this year, and their past track record doesn’t suggest that they can handle a playoff run on a serious contending team.

It depends on the prices but if they can manage to get a goalie who can at the very least keep them competitive until one of the young guys is ready then its worth that price.

After a certain point you can’t just keep hoarding assets when you have the makings of a contender ready to go.

I think it again depends on the price.

For example a 3C type to replace Michael Mcleod, and a guy like Marcus Pettersson to play with marino are big needs. If overpaying for a goalie limits us from filling those holes, I'd say no.

It's probably a safe bet NJ won't be drafting top 10. They are 9th OA right now but are also only 4 points out of WC2 in the east with better tiebreakers. Even if they don't make it I think it will be very close between them, Detroit, and NYI

I think you’re underestimating the impact of our current defensive injuries and jacks current injury.

If Marino is out for a while, we have 3 rookies, bahl, Desimone, smith

Hughes by all accounts is listed as healthy.

Marino is DtD so he will likely only be out for another game or 2 at most. Siegenthaler is also DtD but concussions are harder to predict

You saying that does not change his medical reports. Maybe he's not 100% but he's certainly healthy enough to be playing

To answer original question…

It would take a significant asset coming back from Calgary (as well as some significant groveling by Conroy). Markstrom has a big bonus on July 1st, so unlikely any trade occurs before then (or before 2024 draft). Devils may send out 2025 1st for a goalie, but sending this years #9 pick AND eating $2.5m without any retention means Calgary is adding.
