What I Could See the Canes Doing If Guentzel Walks

Team: 2024-25 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2024
Published: Mar. 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jarvis and Necas get identical 8 year extensions in this scenario. If Guentzel finds someone willing to pay over $9M a season for him in UFA, I could definitely see the Canes buying low on Bertuzzi and going for an ultra-deep defense again (Carrier and Fowler).

The big difference between the Guentzel team that I wrote yesterday and the non-Guentzel team is the stacked defense here (a more generic bottom-pair instead of Fowler anchoring it) and a re-upped Noesen. Link to that: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4987921

fowler has made it pretty clear that he will stay in California no matter what. his 4 team no trade clause will prevent a trade like this.

If a team offersheets necas or Jarvis at 8m per year, do the canes match or take the 1st, 2nd and 3rd?

I've heard that going around before. I think it'll be tough for any player in his situation to not waive it for Carolina if he wants to win the Cup, since he is kind of getting up there in years. Admittedly, though, some players are not as motivated to get the hardware as others can be.

Jarvis, they would match. I think they would walk if it's Necas. My gut feeling, though, is that the Canes and their agents figure out a way to keep both between 6-7.5M a year. Neither should cost more than Svechnikov outside of the offer sheet possibility.

i feel he could have decided to waive a long time ago if he cared, family seems more important. I would also assume if he cared, he would still go to a closer team like vegas or The kings if its about winning.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s more likely than not they end up signing Guentzel. It’ll cost them, but I think they keep him in the end, maybe 65% odds they extend him.

In that scenario, I think they dump Kotkaniemi and his almost $5M or buy him out. Then you have a bit, albeit still pretty tight, of room to bridge Jarvis and lock up Necas long term. The D would certainly take a hit.

You have zero chance of getting that retention from Anaheim so none of the things like trade value or NMC's matter.

I'd rather trade that for Mario Ferraro instead

Bertuzzi stays in T.O. if that low ball offer is best he gets
