Offseason

Created by: NickC1988
Team: 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2024
Published: Mar. 19, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bedard is willing this team along, beating the other bottom tier teams in the league, but this free agent class is weak, and the team is far from ready to compete. Take a couple more cap dumps, overpay for a couple free agents looking to bounce back, and keep two salary retention slots open for Hall/AA/Schmidt/Poolman/Arvidsson at the deadline. Whoever has the most value, move them for picks/prospects.

Summer 2025 is when things may start to open up, with the hope that younger players are available via trade, and the hawks can weaponize the picks accumulated.

Where's Vlasic? Pass on Lebanc. Poolman is done playing - concussion syndrome. Pretty sure the Reichel at C experiment is over too.

The second round pick is right. The Athletic has Schmidt's "surplus value" as negative $1.5 million (when I looked a week ago) and PuckPedia's cap relief value model has a full year of $1.5 million having a value of the 59th overall pick. That suggests Chicago should ask for the Jets their 2nd round pick.

I would pass on all of the FA signings, I think they need to put an emphasis on players with the size/bite combination but can also contribute a bit, a player who could ride shotgun with Bedard but won’t be a black hole offensively… my choice would be Mantha.

I think the value is fair for Schmidt and wouldn’t hate the trade if he can play the right side but I would prefer a pure RHD and for that reason would probably decline… unless they move Murphy the off-season.

No reason to acquire Poolman and given his long term health issues, there probably no real reason for the Canucks to trade him.
