Description
The tides turn in Columbus' favor. After getting an outdoor game, now the hockey Gods gift them with a lottery win. JD and Co. goes with the young, rising-star, hometown hires. Vogelhuber has his team leading the AHL Eastern conference, and Nash just got named Team Canada GM for Worlds.

After drafting Celebrini, Rick's first order of business should be to find Laine a new home. He has so much talent but is too fragile both physically and mentally to be a positive asset to this team. I do care about the person and don't mean to be harsh, but ultimately the NHL is about winning. SEA feels like the perfect fit as a team struggling to break through and needing top-line scoring power.

Vancouver re-signs Petey to a huge deal and subsequently opts to move on from Miller while his contract is still valuable in order to save some cap space and compete long term with Petterson. CBJ would definitely be taking a risk on how that deal ages, but for the immediate future, Miller would provide a high impact 100pt 1C to play with Gaudreau, and another fiery leader to set a positive example for the youngsters.

With Tarasov's play and Elvis' volatility both on and off ice, I'd also try to make a simple move to get him out the door. Let Tarasov take the reins next year with a veteran backup behind him. I'm high on Greaves and Ivanov too and think at least one of them will be an NHL goaltender in a few years.

Provorov is held onto for the time being, but if the team isn't in playoff position at the TDL he will be dealt, along with Kuraly, and potentially Gudbranson and Danforth.

From a team construction standpoint, the forward group feels pretty good. I love having the big forwards - Jenner and Voronkov - on the wing where they can be in on the forecheck more often. It's great having them play in the middle when needed, but they are both more effective as players on the wing.

The defense still needs improved. That could happen organically with Jiricek taking a big step forward, and Mateychuk hopefully as well. As currently constructed, Werenski is a slightly above average No.1, Provorov is an average 3-4, Severson is an average 3-4, and Gudbranson is a good 5-6. Basically, they really need Jiricek to grow into being a good No. 2 sooner rather than later. The Severson contract really hinders the blue line, and I don't think it's really movable at this point, so this team is likely rolling with what they have back there.

Canucks pass. I like Johnson but him coming off a down season and major injury, what could very easily end up being a 2nd and 3rd round pick (if I’m reading the condition right), and a meh RHD is not enough for a 100 point center

Seattle's a good target for Laine, but not Eberle. He just signed an extension with a full NTC. I'd go for Yanni Gourde instead.

Nash and Vogelhuber are both probably the future, but not yet. Bring in veterans for both jobs now with eyes on promotions, a la Sakic to President and MacFarland to GM in Colorado.

Don't see either New Jersey or Vancouver biting on those.

There's some good stuff here overall, but to pick and choose:

1. Celebrini - awesome, but I'm not banking on anything. I'm assuming the pick is 5OA (seems like a safe bet we pass one of Arizona, Ottawa, or Montreal; or get leapfrogged by a team farther back winning one of the lotteries), where I'd like to see one of Levshunov (to get another blue-chip RD in the system), Lindstrom (size and skill with a high floor?), or Catton (skilled play-driving gamebreaker we're lacking), whoever is still available at 5OA if Celebrini and Demidov are also top-5.

2. Vogelhuber and Nash I'd be very happy with, but...

...I don't hate this idea at all either. Of the two, I'd rather have Vogelhuber now and let Nash get some more seasoning.

3. Laine - I'm 100% on the "keep Laine" train. Trading him is lose-lose-lose: getting a bad return on his lowest value, while also losing a potential 40-goal-scorer PP specialist we also need, while also being a bad look on the team, trading a player hopefully (and likely recently) out of the PAP. At worst, he comes back next season and flops, in which case we've lost nothing. Might as well see if he can regain form, and then either trade him at TDL or keep him.

4. I like the idea of trading for a center, but I think it's better served to take the leap of faith that Fantilli can and will be a 1C and go for someone who can be a good 2C. Jenner and Voronkov I like on the wings, and SIllinger looks like he's ready to be that defensively-responsible two-way 3C right now. Trading Johnson to do so, though, is also unlikely and not a great look considering his injury.

5. Elvis - I like that, but NJ may not go for it. Even if we send up to a late-round pick for Allen (a 5th + Elvis for Allen alone), I'd be very happy with that. Again, you've got to take the leap that either Tarasov or Greaves will take the reigns, but likely not next season. Having that seasoned 1B guy would be perfect for one more year of transition, and if it's not Allen, it could be a UFA like Stolarz, Rittich, Talbot, or Jones.

6. Mateychuk - I wish he was AHL-eligible next season...definitely nothing left to prove in the WHL, but he's not a 3rd-pair guy stylistically, and he's blocked by Provorov as long as he's here. I think you have to have him on the NHL roster next season and look to move Provorov closer to January than TDL if Mateychuk looks promising. We could probably use an insurance veteran 7th D on a cheap deal for a couple of seasons for that scenario, and for NHL depth/3rd-pair minutes.

As of now, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and New Jersey will all be lottery eligible and their picks protected. One of them will win the lottery, guaranteed. Chicago and Pittsburgh for obvious reasons, NJ because they’re the luckiest lottery team since 2010. I assume 6OA for Columbus. I am not even looking at anything about Celebrini or Demidov.

Mateychuk’s a 2004 birthday and the current season is his fourth CHL season. He’s definitely AHL eligible next year.

Yeah I'm focusing entirely on all other non-Celebrini/Demidov prospects now, too. At least Chicago is non-lottery eligible for the next 3 years if they win?

I don't know what I was thinking re: Mateychuk/AHL eligibility. He's clearly going to be both 20 and have had 4 CHL seasons...I think top pair down there is the best way to get him going, and then call him up whenever Provorov is moved. Unless he looks really impressive out of camp.
