That's terrible for Ottawa.

Norris is good when he's healthy but if he isn't healthy he can be LTIRed forever.

Couturier has been awful when healthy and there's no way to get rid of him.

Couturier hasn't been awful at all, his numbers the last 6ish weeks haven't been great but it's fairly easy to chalk that up to massive overdeployment relative to his recent injuries earlier in the season. Realistically, he's probably a 45-50 point 3C capable of putting up excellent defensive numbers longer term. He'll probably be slightly overpaid long term, but if he can be our version of Jordan Staal long term that's more than worth it. Philly definitely doesn't make this trade

Having said all of that, I still don't think this makes sense for Ottawa either. I think the potential worst case scenario for Norris is worse than it is for Couturier, but I also don't think the Senators need to make a decision on him this extreme this early on

Paying $7.75 million for a 45-50 point defensive 3C is not a slight overpayment, that's a massive overpayment.

Certainly not a 5 million dollar AHL goalie.

We wouldn't take that deal if you dropped Gibson.

Not really. Jordan Staal himself made 6AAV for about the same, if not less production in his last contract with the Hurricanes when the cap ceiling was lower. With the cap ceiling going up I guarantee you'll see players of similar stature sign for the mid 6 - mid 7 AAV range.

Hell, look at Norris' contract. Outside of 1 season he's hasn't even proved to be a 45-50 point strong defensive C and he's making nearly 8AAV long term

And...I absolutely agree that Norris not worth his contract.

We would want a 2025 first and Brink or Bonk for Gibson. Dumping Petersen is a whole 'nuther story.

That’s too much. We’ve gotta be real here, it’s been years since Gibby definitively outplayed his own ANA net-front counterpart (I recognize there’s more to that story, but still), and he’s expensive at $6.4M. I’d assume one of those level assets should be enough, but taking back a $5M bad goalie should help to elevate the return (which we can gladly do since we have no cap issues next year and he expires after that)

PHI would be nice for the Pennsylvania native as well

I'll admit it -- I'm a Gibson homer.

I get that. And I don’t think the stats have painted a very fair picture; I think he’ll do great with a decent team in front of him. but still need to be a bit honest with ourselves

I still don't get why the Flyers would trade Coots after making him captain. He got scratched for two games, sure that's bad but to think they're desperate to move him is weird.
