Gotta think Ottawa has to be willing to retain at least 15-20% of his contract to make him moveable. So that should be the first question

There would be zero point in retaining $2 million and then give Chychrun $7.5 million a year from now.

It makes much more sense to trade Chychrun and keep Chabot.

+ top 4 puck m oving, PP QB dman in his prime signed for 4 more years
+On pace for 15G 51P this year
+ no trade protection untill july 1st 2024
- has injuries every year

1st rounder between 10-20, A prospect, 2nd round picks, and bottom 4 young Dman with potential upside

Trading a 8m contract is tough, unless a similar cap comes back to the Sens. So essentially a player for a player. A team with cap can certainly sign a good NHL Dman as UFA for under 8m.

Agreed Makes sense to keep Chabot and trade Chychrun. (Personally, I think Chabot is a much better puck mover.)
How about something like Chychrun and Forsberg to Philly for Ristolainen and Cates (or Laughton)? Roughly same cap hit. Chychrun plays with Drysdale Ristolainen plays with Chabot Philly gets a backup goalie for one year. Ottawa gets a bottom 6 winger

Chabot isn’t worth his contract. Slim chance you trade him without retaining on him. 15% is $1.2M retained, I’d think that’d be the minimum amount unless you’re taking another bad contract back and not getting any positive assets for him.

Risto had had a bit of a resurgence with torts but idk if hes the guy I would hitch my wagon to at RD. Idk if his floor is high enough to be a t4 guy on a playoff contender, and i think 3 years of term is a bit sketchy for a bottom pair player. Maybe something like Cates/Laugton and the florida first for Chychrun Forsberg and the sens add a touch of something as well to balance out for taking forsberg

🤮 🤣

You ain’t getting anywhere near that for Chabot. You fail to realize he’s overpaid which is a negative. He’s also only on pace for 34 points, you can’t count games missed as on pace for.. & not to mention that GM’s don’t give a **** what a guy is “on pace for”, it literally means nothing in negotiations. It’s not even brought up.

Sens fans really overhyping Chabot now. This is hilarious.

Yes, but if you trade Chabot and retain $1.2 million then give Chychrun a $7.5 million contract, that means you're effectively paying Chychrun $8.7 million, which he is absolutely not worth.

Basically, I'd rather pay Chabot $8 million than pay Chychrun $8.7 million.

That’s not how it works.

If you retain $1.2M on Chabot but then go sign say Toffoli for $5M are you essentially paying him $6.2M? No. Retained salary is retained salary. It’s not “essentially added on to another player”.

From the Senators perspective and in this specific scenario it does, in fact, mean that.

The Sens have Chabot and Chychrun right now. They will likely trade one of them.

In your scenario they can either pay $8.7 million combined for Chychrun's salary plus Chabot's retention, or pay $8 million for Chabot's salary.

I don't see the difference between saying its essentially paying $8.7 million for Chychrun (which it is because if they trade Chychrun instead there will be no retention money at all) over saying its $7.5 million for Chychrun and $1.2 million for Chabot.
