Looking towards next year

Created by: mcgruff16
Team: 2024-25 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2024
Published: Mar. 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Complete D revamp, got rid of Holl and Maata (space) and bought out the ghost of Petry, he really is awful. Still slightly over the cap so a work in progress but seems like good depth with some youth brought up. I would love to get rid of Copp and/or Chiarot but I think the team likes them and their contracts are immovable. Lots of versatility w/ the Fs too with several guys that can play C or wing. G is scary but w/ Husso and Lyon splitting time and staying healthy they can be decent. (big if)

You are going to need to add something of real value to that Chicago trade to get them to bite. Murphy may not be great but he's needed in Chicago as a mentor and veteran for their young blue line.
I don't know how I feel about Karlsson, I think his contract is a bit too long for us.
You aren't getting positive value of Holl, gonna need to cough up more.
Maatta likely gets a bit more.
Might be a bit low on the Roy contract.

I don't think you get anybody to bite on Holl. I think realistically both he and Petry are either gonna need to be bought out or buried.

Don't see the need to get rid of Maatta only to add Murphy, either. Just make your third pairing Maatta-Chiarot. Maatta has largely been fine as a third pairing D. Chiarot hasn't been terrible this year, but probably does fine with lighter assignments.

It's expensive for a third pairing, yeah. But it's mitigated with Edvinsson on an ELC and Walman at $3.4M.

That's a good point w/ Maata, I guess I was looking at taking 2 years of Murphy in a position of need as the cost/benefit of getting rid of one year of Fabbri who is very replaceable. I just can't believe how bad Holl and Petry are every time I watch them, it's brutal.

AZ can find 'bodies' on UFA cheaper and less term. AZ is not interested in holl either

I feel the same way about Karlsson but I'm looking at VGK as a good target since they'll really need to offload a contract or two. Roy (VGK's Roy) is a better contract but less likely for them to unload I think.

Honestly Holl's brutal but I'll take him over Petry 10 out of 10 times. Like, yeah, last night was the worst case scenario, but it's stuff he's been ****ing up all year.

I totally agree with trading Fabbri. I think Berggren's a way cheaper option. With Murphy though, I feel like you're replacing a bad D with a more expensive, "Meh" D. I'd just pay Roy, throw Chiarot on 3RD and ride his contract out.

And then AlJo or Wallinder slots into Maatta's spot after next year.

Detroit adds significantly in that Hawks trade. Hawks decline instantly as proposed. Murphy may have injury issues, but he's an established leader in the room, on a fair contract and plays a position the Hawks organization has no real depth in at the moment. Trading Murphy means the Hawks immediately need to go out and make another deal to fill his spot. Fabbri is basically a cap dump from the Hawks perspective. They need a 2C for next season. Not another middle 6 winger. Fabbri would have little to no value to the Hawks.

I don't hate the idea of Karlsson but that makes bringing back Kane and upgrading the defense quite a bit more difficult.

You have neither paid for Murphy, nor paid to move Fabbri's contract... CHI declines.

Ya, that Murphy/Fabbri deal is just awful for the Hawks. Murphy while not great is solid and a RHD which is one of, if not the hardest position to fill. As others have stated, Fabbri does not really fill a specific need for the Hawks and is injury prone.

A deal around those two would probably look more like:

To Detroit: Murphy

To Chicago: Fabbri and a 1st round pick.

The only reason the Hawks would take Fabbri is to help balance out the cap hit for the Red Wings.
