Buying out Petry would not open up a retention slot, it would extend the retention through 2025-26

would that not cancel it out when he re-joins the team?

It's a decent idea, but I doubt Yzerman uses Berg to get rid of Petry, or any contract for that matter. Petry makes next to nothing and expires after next year. He can buy him out or offload other contracts to make room.

Berg looks like a legit NHL winger, which we need.

This doesn't make any sense for Philly. Atkinson for Anderson favors MTL, Ristolainen is fairly close to Savard in terms of overall level of play at this point and losing the 1st without getting anything meaningful back towards the Flyers long term goals isn't something they can afford to do

Barron is meh and I'd rather just buy out Petry than lose Berggren if he's willing to sign after all the jerking around we've done with him.

No, retention remains even if a player rejoins the retaining team, so we would have both Petry and the Petry retention as separate entities at that point.

Unrealistic
Philly aren't trading a 1st
Someone explained to you the retention slot wouldn't be available
MTL have a **** load of future 3rd line winger, no need of Berggren

I personally like Berggren more than most of our forward prospects, but that's just my opinion.

Detroit has zero interest in Barron, Petry will not waive to go back to Montreal so it's a moot point. Berggren would be a nice piece in a package deal for Jakob Chychrun so we pass 100%

I think petry would waive again if it's agreed that they'll buy him out, because at that point he gets to choose where he goes, but there's no shot he'd play for Montreal again
