Rantanen trade

Created by: Thorne
Team: 2024-25 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 1, 2024
Published: Apr. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the depth Avalanche is allowed to have if Rantanen is traded, going with Annunen-Lyon is risky, but strong depth and possibly the strongest defence Avalanche has ever had might allow Avs to make cost savings in the goaltending department. Acquisition of Edvinsson makes Girard expendable in the future (replaced with Behrens or Gulyayev), while Berggren would be a reclamation project who can play up in the lineup if needed.

Avs would probably field a weaker team than they would if they decided to keep Rantanen, but with a potential caphit of $13M with his next contract, Avs might be better off trading him for futures on the expense of 24-25 season.

Don't see Detroit doing that. Rantanen is amazing but I'm pretty sure we just keep our high end young pieces.

Edit: for some reason I thought I saw Raymond in this. Slightly changes my perspective now. Not sure how I feel.

I know what day it is, but that is a severe underpay for Rants

It is really hard to find comparable trades, Edvinsson would probably be the centerpiece in the trade, I can't see DET adding another one of their blue chip assets on top of that (Augustine, Kasper, ASP, Danielson). So I think the value might be off but if DET would add, it would probably be conditional first rounders, later round picks or lesser prospects.

Rants isn't likely to come in at a higher price than Mac. I see him at $12x8 which isn't all that much better but that's a decent 4th line player.

MacK contract was also signed 2 years earlier, if Rants extension would come at identical caphit% it would carry an AAV of $13.36M, so I guess that is the upper limit of the extension, I see no way he signs for less than $12.5M (total contract value going over 100M carries a lot of prestige).

I think Mac brings in a bigger return but as far as a decent 4th line player I think that will change drastically depending on the teams cap space.

Fair enough but $12Mx8=96, his jersey number so there's that, too.

For the reasons you gave for the Avs to trade him...an expensive contract in one year when he is a UF,A, is the exact reason the Wings would't give that much to obtain him.

I think how much his next contract is going to play a big part in his return since it will take about half the league out of the picture

It is the teams that are looking to exit their rebuilding phase, and don't have elite talent to make the push, I think the teams that make the most sense are Buffalo, Ottawa, Detroit, Columbus, Nashville, Montreal and Seattle. For return COL would likely look at blue chip prospects ready to contribute at NHL level, while carrying ELC cap hit, till example Benson, Edvinsson, Jiricek, Reinbacher. Other type of package I can see Rantanen being traded for is a package that includes top6 winger with term and team-friendly caphit (Tuch, Björkstrand, Batherson) along with several first round picks or prospects carrying equal value.

Detroit ain't trading Edvinsson and a 1st (++++) for a winger and I don't see why Colorado would be trading Rantanen for prospects... Particularly a LHD when they were apparently comfortable enough to trade Byram away.

Avs decline. There's simply no real need for them to trade Rantanen.

Who would you get rid of next summer? On top of losing Drouin and Walker for nothing, COL has to get rid of atleast one roster player (Girard, Colton, Lehkonen) to make the cap work if they insist on keeping Rantanen. While I agree that keeping Rantanen probably gives us the better roster for 24-25, I think that by trading him COL can extend the cup-contending window beyond 26-27 (Makar extension).

Colton. Not because I dislike him in any way but because he's the most replaceable. The only way you trade Rants is if you're thinking of doing something like going after Guentzel in free agency and trading for Crosby if he were to suddenly be available.

No doubt it's hard to find a comp, because these guys just don't get traded often. The problem with every prospect is they are unproven prospects and the Avs are in win now mode. Edvi is a cool piece to watch but he isn't in the league yet. You could offer Raymond, Edvi and a 1st and I would say no thanks.

His next deal will be like Nylander or Pasta, but lets just call it 12m. The Avs can easily fit that and roster a cup contender.

When the Pens have some top prospects and are reluctant to move them because the cap/timing/fit/etc are tricky you let me know. We can revisit this.
