Make room for young players

Created by: BluesReport18
Team: 2024-25 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 15, 2024
Published: Apr. 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For next year the main goal should be the continued development of the younger players. Keep Bolduc with Thomas they've looked great together. I mean Thomas can make almost any player better but Bolducs willingness to be a sniper is great for Thomas. Put Neighbours with them and I think you could have a great top line.

Another goal should be acquiring a young, middle 6 center OR signing a veteran center to a short term contract.

Find a way to get rid of Faulk and Krug. They don't fit the window for this team to win and I'd like to see how Kessel and Perunovich perform in full time roles next year.

After the trade deadline, younger players like Dvorsky, Dean, Snuggerud, and maybe even Lindstein would get looks in the lineup.

Trades
1.
STL
  1. Duda, Artem [Reserve List]
  2. 2024 1st round pick (ARI)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Similar to the Alex Debrincat trade to Ottawa a few years ago. I think Buch is a better player than Debrincat and brings a lot more value to a team but he is also a few years older than Debrincat was when he got traded.

It has been stated that Utah wants to spend up to the cap and build a competitive team. What better way to do that than getting a true top line winger.

Buch would come with an 8x8 extension.

At 6th the Blues draft Dickson, Silayev, or Buium (whoever they like most).
2.
STL
  1. 2024 4th round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Gives Columbus a veteran center to play with some of the younger players.

Honestly this could be any team. If nobody wants Hayes he has a cheap buyout. The Blues need to get younger and they don't have the luxury of keeping Hayes.
CBJ
  1. Hayes, Kevin ($1,571,429 retained)
3.
STL
  1. Lundell, Anton [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Lundell would be a very interesting add for the Blues. He has sort of plateaued in Florida and is stuck in the 3C role. Can they afford an extension for him? Could another team possibly offer sheet Lundell? I would do it as the Blues.

In this trade they get a Montour replacement for under 4 million which is HUGE for Florida as they are in desperate need of cap space. It is easier to replace a 3C than it is to replace a top 4 defender.
FLA
  1. Faulk, Justin ($3,250,000 retained)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (WSH)
4.
STL
  1. 2024 4th round pick (BOS)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Any team. Krug 50% retained should have some sort of positive value as he is still a quality defender. At this point though the Blues just need to turn things over to Perunovich.
BOS
  1. Krug, Torey ($3,250,000 retained)
5.
STL
  1. Hague, Nicolas
  2. Lehner, Robin
Additional Details:
Vegas is going to need to do something on their Blue line and moving Hague is probably the most likely option. The Blues also take on Lehner to help Vegas in actual money terms.
VGK
  1. 2024 4th round pick (BOS)

Debrincat was a pending RFA when he was moved. Buchnevich is going to be a pending UFA at 29 years old. You definitely aren’t getting the 6th pick for him

He wouldn't be a pending UFA though in the deal he would sign an 8 year extension. Otherwise the deal wouldn't happen.

The thing is, there will be 31 other teams lining up to take Hague if he is a cap casualty, and all 31 will give up much more than a 4th for him

Next season should be transformation of forward group (more ice to young forward, trade Buch), after that season we can trade Faulk and Krug.

Panthers aren’t trading away lundell for that. Probably can just get Faulk if he’ll waive for a 2nd at most.

Hayes is not the sort of veteran center Columbus needs or wants. We need glue guys who are good mentors and Hayes' reputation in that regard is dubious at best.
