The new face of the franchise

Created by: MW6
Team: 2024-25 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 6, 2024
Published: Apr. 17, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marner is traded for somewhat the equivalent what Eichel was traded for.
Krebs < McMichael, Tuch >Wilson, a 1st, a 2nd round pick, and a 3rd for having the extension in place.

Zegras is brought in and gets a fresh start after a rough year. Ducks get a 1st, a former 1st rounder and two recent second round picks to bolster their rebuild.

Chychrun is brought in to offload and complement Carlson and later take over when Carlson retires. A 1st, a 2nd and two players more then covers what it cost Ottawa to bring him in and now he only has one year left until being a UFA.

Love the thought on Marner. I think his availability is determined partly by how Leafs do in the playoffs. Can't see the Caps giving up that much for Zegras, especially with Leonard not signing until 25-26. I'd rather have the picks, cap space, and Cristall which align with the post-Ovi window. I like the Chychrun idea, but at that point I think it makes sense to just wait and see if he hits free agency. The 2025 and 2026 picks could be lottery (then again we thought that this year).

Honestly seems pretty reasonable to me, I still don't think Marner would waive his NMC though

While I like the ideas of these trades, Caps are in no position to trade their next 3 1st round picks....

In my opinion:
1. Zegras is just another Kuzy - GREAT skill, but inconsistent. I'm not sure I would be willing to give up the asking price.
2. I think with the recent play of the Caps LHD, Chychrun might not have a spot...Fehervary has played outstanding and so has AA. And the Caps won't be trading Sandin. Maybe there is a fit on the right side, but Carberry has said he likes defenders playing on traditional true side. Plus, I would rather just wait and see if the Caps can sign Chychrun in the next offseason if their is a need.
3. Marner would be awesome - no doubt about it. And personally, I would think about that trade from a Caps perspective. But I don't think Caps management would ever do that trade (specifically giving up Wilson, their next captain, who they just signed to a long-term deal).

I think the Caps would be willing to trade this year's first (and might consider McM along with other players/prospects) in a package for a top 6 winger, but I would think the following are off limits:
Ovi, Strome, Wilson, Carlson, Fehervary, Miro, Leonard.

Feels like a massive overpay for an 11 mill rental who controls his destination

IMO depends on NJD, if they go back to 2023 NJD PHI and WSH maybe be out and NYI will struggle, but too much of a gamble IMO to hope WSH misses next year
