Additional Details:
Trade only works if Marner is signed to an extension by Columbus immediately. Trade takes place on July 2nd with Laine agreeing to be paid his signing bonus a day late so Toronto can use their financial power as a bargaining tool. Leafs pay Marners extension prior to the trade meaning it cost Columbus $775000 to have Marner on their roster next year in real dollars. Marner plays with Fantilli and they become a very exciting duo on the ice.

Leafs get the Centre depth we need with an aging Tavares. Boon Jenner is a leader who can lock down the third line and play both ends of the ice.

Patrick Laine needs a fresh start and has been struggling off the ice. Coming into the leafs could give him a chance to restart his career. If given a spot on the second power play and third line he could bring depth scoring that we have needed.

Jiricek is a good young defender that will need a few years to develop but could be a great player in the NHL very soon and is a right handed shot. He is the main piece coming back in this trade.

Leafs have developed further then these guys are capable to be a factor. Trade them for draft picks to allow us to make deadline moves next season or hold onto and make picks depending on what we decide next winter.

Giving up multiple assets for one guy we’ll get the pleasure of paying $13M per year until he is 36, all so he can have his production halved because he’s not getting passes from Matthews or Tavares. Maybe he can be great with Fantilli, but that’ll take time, and if we’re going to pay him like he’s going to want to be paid, it’s going to need to be for immediate production, not production down the line.

Plus, CBJ aren’t one Marner away from the playoffs, and I’d much rather spread the cap hit and production out (sound familiar?), and have one Boone and one Jiricek than one Marner right now. We can also probably get better value for Laine (retained) from another team built around futures.

Part of Jarmo’s problem as GM was straddling. CBJ would be rebuilding, but then make these poorly timed “win-now” or “veteran leadership” trades and signings. Would just put CBJ in a limbo where they are stuck in the worst of both worlds - too "good" to tank, too bad to actually be consistently competitive.

This just feels like it would be more of that.

The jackets definitely dont make that trade. Marner also wouldnt waive for Cbus so it doesnt really matter.

I wouldn’t trade Jenner straight up for Marner, so what on earth makes you think they would get Jenner and Jiricek???? Please Leafs fans you are embarrassing yourselves now. Oh, and you want to swindle Laine too. If this was for Matthews…might think about that, but Marner?? No. Just no.

I won't address the trade, it's an obvious no and @dopplsan already covered it all.

I will say: Toronto needs to temper their expectations for a Marner trade. Yes, he's moveable even with a full NMC, but he's going to use it to dictate exactly where he wants to go (a la Kaberle to Boston). Everyone knows that, everyone knows it's Marner that's going to go, and everyone knows they only make that trade if they're going to extend him. He's not taking a pay cut, so to opportunity to pay him $11M+ for 7-8 more years isn't exactly attractive either.

The cap space alone is a valuable asset, and Toronto should see it as a win if they get a 1st and a top prospect back from a contender for him without retaining.

If Toronto can move both Tavares and Marner without retaining any salary, and can actually get back a 1st and a top prospect + additional secondary pieces, having that extra $22M in cap space is gold alone.
