Trade down with Ottawa

Description
According to a draft pick value calculator, Ottawa's picks 7th and 39th have identical value to MTL's 5th pick. It is known that MTL would prefer to draft a forward all things equal, problem is if Celebrini, Demidov, and Lindstrom are already gone as expected then it might be a bit of a reach to take Iginla at 5 (which I think is the next player MTL would target). So maybe they trade down to 7, Ottawa gets a player they really like (no idea who that might be) and MTL gets the 39th overall pick as compensation. I think it makes sense for MTL, Ottawa fans what's your take on this deal?

Edit: My mock draft if Ottawa didn't trade up...

1. Celebrini (SJS)
2. Levshunov (CHI)
3. Lindstrom (ANA)
4. Demidov (CBJ)
5. Iginla (MTL)
6. Buium (UTA)
7. ??? (OTT)

Only scenario I see MTL trading down is if they view Demidov and Lindstrom in a category above the other group of forwards and both are gone by 5th overall. Only then would trading down make sense. Add another asset fo another move, and select one of Iginla, Catton, Eiserman, Sennecke, etc.

If Habs view, let's say, Iginla in the same group as Lindstrom, they probably just use the pick on Iginla if Lindstrom is gone instead of risking moving down and still not getting him.

According to the https://puckpedia.com/pickvalue the value is spot on but prob only happens if Lev makes it to #5.

If Levshunov drops to #5, I see MTL picking him, then making another trade with another one of their Dmen (Barron almost 100% at that point, but probably one of their LD too). Only reason for OTT to trade up imo is if they think Utah have the same target as them. My guess is if both Utah and Ottawa have the same preference between Buium or Parekh.

Sens taking a LD would be stupid.

They don’t need a marginal upgrade on Chabot/Chychrun as much as they need an upgrade on JBD

If Ottawa needs RHD not LHD then would they just take Parekh at 7th? I believe Utah would draft Buium from U of Denver.

Edit: Or even Silayev to go with their other Russian D man drafted last year by Arizona.

Sens very likely take Parekh at 7th, unless they reach for Yakem.

Utah could consider Parekh but Parekh is my 1st choice, Iginla is my 2nd

So Parekh it is then. If Ottawa identifies him as their target they want, but have any kind of belief that Utah might select him. Trading up makes sense.

Tie in the reason I outlined for MTL (both Demidov and Lindstrom are gone), then trading down for the Habs makes sense too (especially if MTL think both Utah and Ottawa are picking defensemen).

So, hypothetical scenario:

#1 SJS - Celebrini
#2 CHI - Demidov
#3 ANA - Levshunov
#4 CBJ - Lindstrom

In this situation MTL trading down with OTT makes sense both ways. OTT gets Parekh, Utah probably goes for Silayev, Buium, or Dickinson, and MTL pick either Iginla, Catton, Eiserman, or Senneke.

Thats assuming chycrun is a sen two seasons from now which given his year end response seems a bit dubious.

I think the main issue is Utah could conceivably go either side. On the nhl roster atm beyond durzi theres almost nothing thats a long term solution. Of their signed guys in the.minors lamoureaux is probably a nhler but more depth than core.

On the reserve list theres simashev obviously as a LD but beyond that its pretty thin.

As deep as they are of young Dmen. The thought of MTL having a D core of:

Guhle - Levshunov
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux
Struble - Engstrom

That's some cool crazy $h!t right there lol

We still have Chabot.

Sanderson - Parekh
Chabot - Zub
Kleven - Vet

I think the Sens will just take Parekh or Iginla at 7.

We need every pick possible to restock our pipeline

Habs are at the point where they don't need quantity, they need quality. If anything they try and trade up to 2 or 3 for Demidov. Adding a 2nd round pick doesn't have any value to the Habs.

I agree... but if MTL's desired pick is Iginla (assuming at this point that the better forward options are gone) then why reach for him at 5 if you could trade down and still get your guy.

Based on how this thread discussion went it seems like there is no way Ottawa would want to trade up anyways.

Regarding MTL trading up... easier said than done. I don't see any of the rebuilders picking before them wanting to trade back based on the players available to them at 1 - 4.

I don't think there's anybody who will be available at 5 that the Sens *really* want that Montreal wouldn't want just as much tbh
