hmmm
I don't know if I'm right but feels like NHL wouldn't allow a team to trade a player (Smith here) then reacquire said player with retained salary.

He wouldnt be in the habs top 4 by the time they are ready to contend we have better options</div></div>
The reason they didn't sign him long term was cap space. End of story. Also sidenote about his defence Bouchard actually has the lowest xGA/60 of the Oilers blueliners.

Well Holland contract is over before the draft and Oilers already replaced his Tyler Wright with a new Head Amateur scout. So might not be his 1st rounder

Fairly sure, this contract is lower then what McLeod would have been awarded in arbitration solely based on Kurashev getting 2.25M

I mean Edmonton had to use Kostin rights to move Yamamoto and he had better numbers then Joseph without the 2 extra years. Also Yamamoto only required a 1/3 buyout, Joseph would be a 2/3 buyout if he doesn't work out.

Edmonton Oilers signed Raphael Lavoie (1 Year / $874,125 AAV)
Taking his QO instead of a league min contract makes it harder to carry him on the roster. 100k makes pretty big difference for the Oilers currently.
League min with higher AHL pay would have made more sense but I guess he is betting on himself making the roster regardless.

I believe they would have traded to split the pick into more picks when their ideal target Bonk (imo) was taken.

If they are going to go cheap on goaltending, I think they should trade for Vladar and run a Copley/Vladar tandem instead.</div></div>
Vladar could be expensive within the division but would be a good fit.

Blues retooled
The players in your Keller trade add almost no value, Perunovich is the only one worth maybe a 3rd/4th atm. Would be better off removing all of them adding one or both of the CBJ dumps(Scandella/Kapanen) into that trade then adding a better prospect.
Oilers trade would most likely need Ceci to be included. For Oilers cap situation.
Scrap the Pens trade. Not going to get a 1st or 2nd return for Saad anyways. Would have Ceci from Oilers trade for #2/3RD anyways.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMDannyB</b></div><div>If you ask the flyers to take away their last retention slot and ask the flyers to make TK a $2.75M player ur gonna have to overpay for him. That in my mind starts with Holloway or Broberg and 2023 1st and adds from there. Nobody is going to just hand you a $2.75M player that scores at a PPG you have to pay up for that</div></div>
Nothing in my comment was about value or 50% retention, just that the Oilers needed some retention for a trade to be possible. Even the OP didn't even ask for 50% retention. Also Broberg has rumoured to be tradeable recently for top 6 or top 4 help.

As for the retention. other then those 3 players I don't really see a need to have a retention slot open for TDL unless Flyers acquire a 1 year term UFA this offseason. TDA slot would be freed up for next year. Comes down to the Oilers need retention or trade likely impossible.

All buyouts under 25 years old are 1/3 value. Wennberg buyout was crazy cheap for Columbus awhile back. Also agree some team would take him he scored 20 goals and can PK.

I don't think Pulock is the right comparsion for Bouchard as Pulock had already been bridged twice. Rasmus Andersson contract would be more in the ballpark I believe as both contracts would have similar RFA vs UFA years in their duration.

The #1 thing Oilers struggle with is EV defence where Ekholm shows a ~60% improvement while playing against tougher assignments and with lesser teammates. A lot of Barrie's value was PP minutes but even then he wasn't really the main reason for the PP success.
