3 way deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>How bout paying a winger almost $8M to be even more offensive oriented? - sounds like Caufield.
Dubois at his best is a 200ft power forward. He was exactly that when Columbus shut down Toronto in the bubble playoffs and Dubois went head to head with Matthews and was better. The issue with Dubois isn’t skill or his contract ($8.5M for a second line centre actually isn’t bad value), the issue his his consistency because of his attitude. Which would almost certainly be better playing for Montreal but it’s been made quite clear that he wants to play there.
Dach is also only 3 years younger. At the same age:
Dubois - 0.64ppg in 280 games
Dach - 0.46ppg in 212 games
That’s an average of 15 points more per season so yeah, Dubois is better and was better at the same age.</div></div>
First of all, Caufield isn't offensively oriented, he's been a plus defensive player for like 90 games now. Dubois also hasn't played a 200 ft game since he stopped playing for Torts.
As for Dach vs. Dubois, Dubois is not twice as good as Dach and I'm not going to bet on him being good into his 30s (because players with attitude issues almost always fall off early and he's not worth what he's being paid now). The whole point is that you can assume that Dach has zero value and the trade still doesn't make sense for Montreal.

Not going to dig to deep on this, but there's no reality that would see Nashville choose to pay that for Nelson over Johnston.

3 way deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Dubois is still more valuable than Dach alone. Even in Dubois’ worst season (this year) still produces more than Dach has in his career - Dach is all potential at this point and he continues to not live up to it.
Also dissing on a guy signed to a long term deal that’s having really the 1st bad season of his career but is still 25 is pretty bold. Considering most Montreal fans wanted to trade for him last summer.</div></div>
Ok, then have your your favourite team take Montreal's place in this proposal.
And Montreal fans wanted Dubois at a lower cap hit and a lesser cost than Dach. Actually, its been reported that that's the case with management too.
And its not even the worst season of his career, he was worse in 2020-2021.
The issue with Dach isn't ability, its health. But even if he can't stay healthy, he's younger, has less than half the AAV and doesn't have trade protection.
And its irrelevant what you think of relative value of players, paying over 8 mil a season to a center that's mostly offense oriented and needs to be on the PP to be effective is never a good idea.

2024 1st: Around the value Cozens would have
Reinbacher: Likely close to enough to pry away Cozens
Anyways, don't really think MTL would trade a guy that would be our 3C when Dach comes back from injury.</div></div>
I'm not even sure why Montreal would want Cozens.

Montreal definitely passes, this makes no sense for them.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Since when does a guy coming off missing a full season with a torn ACL get a return of 5 pieces?</div></div>
We pretending that a forward whose overpaid on a long term contract with full trade protection, two depth prospects and two 3rds is a meaningful return for anyone, let alone retaining salary on Skinner for a 3 more seasons? You could replace Dach with Armia or Dvorak and Montreal would still decline.

Those trades make absolutely no sense for the teams that aren't the Islanders. Montreal doesn't need LD and wouldn't want Pelech's contract. Ducks don't need Pageau (and no team is going to pay to eat that contract). Ottawa doesn't have any reason to consider that package for both Chychrun and Pinto.
Chatfield, Henrique and Pinto are also being underpaid.

They're actually the furthest, as they go from carrying Price's entire contract on LTIR to having to having half of it as salary retention. Its effectively them swapping a player that they have a spot for for a player they don't, and both increasing the term and cap space devoted to bad contracts.

Necas to Montreal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Necas is above average defensively, what? Cushy matchups he gets by playing with the second powerplay unit, the top line, all while tasked with zone entries? Necas is hands down the better player here and he'd be even better where he doesn't have a leash on him. That is not questionable. Rod's system kills offensive talent, that is known.
Not get rid of the line, make it better. Staal's sucked, give KK the spot. He's been better defensively, offensively and in transition this year than Staal. Fast has not done anything. He works hard, but you can get that way cheaper, look at Stefan Noesen. No need to have them next year</div></div>
You make it sound like being tasked with zone entries is hard to find. And Necas gets an extreme Ozone usage push and rarely plays other teams top players at 5v5, especially relative to who he plays with. That's so far from having a leash on. He's as textbook a sheltered point producing forward as there is in the NHL.
Necas is a really good player, but it seems like you're selectively making opinions on him, other Canes and other players in the NHL on a very limited look of stats and not at all watching them play.

Necas to Montreal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Necas is a 70+ point producer that's 6'2, the fastest skater in the NHL, and is prime to explode in a system that doesn't require him to play Selke level defense... Staal and Fast have both been awful this year and Drury I can go either way, I think he'd be a fine 4C, but Lily would fill the gap on the backend.</div></div>
If Necas ever actually played Selke level defence (or even above average defence like Caufield has this season), then I'd buy that argument more. As is, Necas is probably benefiting far more getting cushy matchups with strong teammates and there's no reason to expect he'd even be this good on another team.
And if you want Carolina to get rid of their insanely tough minutes table setting line, then I guess that's up to you, but I imagine Carolina's front office is smarter than that.

I guess a cure to addressing biased homerific proposals is to make one as well.
Without getting into the incomplete view of Caufield, its kind of strange how you overrate Necas and underrate Fast, Drury and Staal, Like, its kind of distracting that Carolina's competitive advantage has been basically dismantled with every other trade in this Armchair-GM.

If we get a 6 through 9 pick
Ignoring that the Canadiens probably aren't interested in trading young talent for picks right now (and the premise of the idea you linked is pretty flawed), Newhook and Barron are not analogous. It is unlikely that Montreal has much interest in Poulin and even if Montreal wanted another top-10 pick, they're not going to move Newhook, a late 1st, a (likely high) 2nd and the rest for one.

Anderson has a lesser cap hit and is much younger, Montreal has room on their roster for him, and Montreal legitimately does not have a spot on their D core for Vlasic. Its a very easy pass for Montreal.

I don't see Montreal or Toronto making that trade.
It sounds like Toronto sees Hildeby as a goalie of the future and Toronto needs more certainty on D if they're moving their first. I think Montreal prefers not to trade young D to a division rival for futures and probably aren't interested in Hildeby (they have a pretty good young goalie pipeline).

Rebuild or Compete
The only scenario that would lead Montreal (or most teams I imagine) to acquire a soon to be 37 year old Letang who has a full NMC is if the cost is similar to the last mid to late 30s "top" D-man with serious trade protection was traded - Brent Burns. No team is going to offer anything remotely close to a 1st++ for Letang.

Matheson isn't really replaceable right now for Montreal. He's certainly not going to moved for a 2nd and a 3rd. Even if he's been bad defensively, its really hard to find someone who can even be as effective as he has been playing over 25 minutes a night mostly against top lines and top pairs.

I'd be pretty surprised if Montreal would have any interest in this trade. Montreal's been pretty carefully clear up capspace for the 2025 offseason and there's nothing here that makes sense for them to deviate from that plan.
Due respect to Pageau, he's not what he once was and doesn't really make sense for Montreal compared to just sticking with Dvorak.

Even with a Greig, I'm not sure how that D core keeps them out of the bottom 10 considering the division they're in. Internal growth is probably more important than external acquisitions.

Lundell is good, but the chance to get Montreal's unprotected 1st with that roster might be to good to pass up. Especially since the Sens definitely don't do that trade.
