Use of Cap and Assets
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>I think the Pens have better options. Even though he's overpriced, Petry is still a legit 2nd pairing defenseman. Ben Chairot tanked Seider so hard when they were paired together that I don't trust him on my blueline period. I don't think Zadina for Granlund makes up that difference, and Granlund's buyout is pretty reasonable.
I get the idea behind the trade, and it's an interesting one to consider. Yeah, it's more cap space to build a better supporting cast, but IMO the downgrade to our already poor defense is significant enough to counteract that.</div></div>
To be fair, Chiarot and Seider were a bad idea. Seider did pretty good last year with Oesterle. Seider did unbelievably well with Walman. Turns out, seider is a puck carrier but he can't do it when his partner can't keep up to give him an outlet. Yzerman is drafting guys who can skate for a reason.

How do you feel about a #14 and Granlund for #18 and Zadina trade. I don't know how I feel about it yet but it just popped in my brain.

Another Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CJ1909</b></div><div>I think signing free agents this summer to multiple years would be a mistake. Trading for assets that are within the window make more sense even with higher priced assets. Lets say we sign a RHD or Killorn to 2-5 year deals, those players are not getting to the playoffs, but a RyJo, Debrincat, Guentzel, Rakell, Boeser, etc will help us get there with some player development. We have big holes at RW or RH LW, 2C/RH C, RHD, a true #1 goalie or 1B and players with grit/size. We are not 1 year away yet thus we should be taking on cap to get assets while acquiring talent with those assets. Why not take on Myers or why didn't we take on Zaitsev and we'd have picks 41-44 in this draft? Imagine another 2nd round pick when we could use a serviceable RHD for only 1 year while this years cap will not be an issue at all.</div></div>
Oh I totally agree with the cap dump aspect. Seems like a waste to not do it. I would have loved that Zaitsev deal. Make the fourth a fifth or sixth or just get rid of it. Pretty much all my AGMs I make I have us taking Bailey and two seconds for Mastrosimone and Kubalik. Seems to work for Islanders fans. Everything else you said I agree with as well.

Also, if Copp can be put on LW line 2 to expand his offensive side which would be a big help. Rolling Copp at 2C would be another mistake next year as he cannot produce at that spot. We need a 2C to score 50-60 pts with 20ish goals and I don't see Copp ever doing that unless he is moved to the Wing.</div></div>
I agree, I think Copp would be good at 3C or 2LW. I don't see many other options other than just waiting for a drafted player to take that spot.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Benzino204</b></div><div>Steve Yzerman is a fantastic G.M, but for the life of me I don't understand why he gave that contract to Chairot, who is nothing more than a 6th defenseman on a mediocre team, and a 7th defenseman on a contender. I don't think I'm the only Jets fan who is completely disinterested in a Chairot reunion.</div></div>
Chiarot was signed because the Red Wings were lacking size and toughness on defense. Too many fans only look at offensive numbers when judging players. Chiarot does many things which won't show up on a scoresheet.
He brings an element of nastiness and is hard to play against. That's why teams value him much more than the casual hockey fan does. It's why Florida overpaid for Chiarot at the trade deadline.
Chiarot certainly has his warts and yes, Stevie paid too much for him. But that's UFA. You give up no assets but pay too much. Detroit isn't a prime destination for UFAs right now. We are still a team way under the salary cap. So who cares if we overpay?
This changes when Seider and Raymond's contracts are up. But even then we'll have contracts dropping off so we'll still have plenty of cap space. Chiarot provides good leadership to the young players. He's a team first guy.
I don't just look at a player's contract when judging players. Is Chiarot overpaid? Sure he is. But he helps the Red Wings and doesn't hurt us at all.
It's unfortunate he didn't mesh playing with Seider but that's ok. Some players just don't fit styles wise. The more the Red Wings improve the more valuable Chiarot will become. He's a bridge player for us.
We won't become what we want to be over night and Yzerman knows this. He needs guys like Chiarot and Perron to be leaders right now and that's exactly what they're doing.
Larkin can't do it all by himself.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CJ1909</b></div><div>As said by most -- No way the Cat brings back what was given up to get him and it surely wouldn't be a top 10 pick. OTT has no bottom 6 guys roster players signed next year except Mathieu Joseph and they wouldn't be able to sign the Cat at his new AAV as Norris comes off IR without sacrificing monies to plug holes on their back end. You have to believe the leverage is the team acquiring not OTT.
Flip side, acquiring teams cannot give up top prospects that are ready to step in and play in the NHL right away to help offset when trading and extending these big 8yr x $8-9M players in trades -- see Horvat or Meier deals. Realistically, I could see something similar to what was done in the Fiala trade last summer when MIN was in a similar situation (cost was 19th OA pick and solid prospect of Faber).
DET gives up '23 1st (NYI) ~18th OA now, Zadina or Kubalik and a LHD prospect (Johansson, McIssac, Sebrando)</div></div>
Take Johansson out of that and I agree.

A 40 goals scorer when he plays with Partick Kane :-/ What do you think if we added Kubalik in the trade? Cheap Cap hit and he could play on that 2nd line. Including Kukalik in the trade would obviously lessen the value that Ottawa is getting back.

No it ain't. 9 million AAV (which is what he probably will want), a mid first, an early 2nd, and an early 3rd ain't worth a player who has been mediocre (or even subpar) at 5v5.

Sold On S and J Not K
I agree that Johansson and Sundqvist have looked great.
I'd do the Johansson deal.
However, no way am I spending that much money & term on Sundqvist. If he doesn't resign for cheap, I'd let him walk. I'd rather give more playing time to Walker, Beckman, and other young players.
I'd also prioritize resigning FreddyG since he's looked great the past two seasons.
I don't get this site's obsession with trading Goligoski. He's killed it analytically the past two seasons and has shown little-to-no interest in playing elsewhere; rather the opposite, he'd rather retire with his hometown team.
I'd keep Hunt since he's shown more promise than ROR imo.
It's unlikely we sign Livingstone as he's a VAN native. LaCombe would be nice but I doubt he doesn't sign with the team that drafted him given they will provide him with more opportunity / playing time. Plus, the Wild are loaded with D prospects so he'd have to compete with ROR, Hunt, & Lambos for the #6 spot.

I mean a likely late 1st and a mid 2nd for a decent RHD who's 22 and a cupdump isn't the worst. Maybe change it to a 2nd and 3rd, remove the 5th and I take that tbh.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CJ1909</b></div><div>Yeah, I'm even debating whether Edvinsson plays in DET right now unless an overhauled top 9 F happen where some bigger contracts and more offensive players come in. I don't want to waste Edvinsson's ELC years on a team that doesn't make the playoffs, that would not be smart.
For RHD I like a couple of players that fit the need -- Neal Pionk, Sean Walker/Durzi, Damon Severson. But I think stop gaps could be Jeff Petry, Tyler Myers, Tyson Barrie, Justin Faulk. Drafting a RHD in the 1st this year will need to happen.</div></div>
I think pionk or walker would be a good add depending on the cost. Drafting a Rd probably happens but I hope it's with our later 1st rounder. I hate to pass up a high end forward that we could get with that early pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CJ1909</b></div><div>Solid post Jfstompers
I continue to think about how Fabs doesn't have a true spot in the lineup and at $4M he needs to play middle 6 or be traded to a team that can use him and give him a spot in the top 9 as he has all the skill to be there so yes Kubs or Zadina would need to be moved.
Chariot moving to RD and being in the top 4 makes me very weary.
I would keep Kasper down in GR and let him be 1C there with Sods flanking him and they can develop together similar to how Veleno and Berger did.
Acciari and Hill would be great signings to kick the can down the road another year to start to form some longer term deals and plug/play some cheaper prospects once Ray and Mo's deals kick in.</div></div>
I'm not sold Kasper would be ready but it seems a debate so I just entertained it. They seem to be doing everything they can not to bring Elmer back up so I just went with it. I hate Chairot on the right , well on the left too but we painted ourselves into a corner so he's going to be out there no matter what at this point. I'm hesitant to put him on the third pair with Edvinsson but I think he ends up there depending on what else we do at Rd. If they don't bring Edvinsson up they better get someone on the right with some offense because Walman on the pp is a disaster and hroneks puck moving ability is already missed.
