Offseason re-tooling to take the next step

Created by: CJ1909
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 14, 2023
Published: Mar. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Wings get their RH 1a/b C in Scheifele and can extend him
- Wings need some more RH scoring options (Konecny)
- Talbot comes in the spell Husso and bridge till Cossa is ready - signs lower due to injuries over the last couple of years
- Myers ($6M), Perron ($4.75M) & Vrana retention ($2.625M) come off the books after next year and basically offsets Seider ($7M increase) and Raymond ($6M increase)
- Schmidt adds some much more needed offense from the back end while being able to actually play D - WPG needs some salary relief to make other moves
- Lots of staggering ending contracts (1,2,3 year deals) provide balance for incoming top prospects Edvisson, Kasper, Cossa, Mazur, Wallinder

LA wouldn't trade Grans alone for that return.

Sean Walker for the rights to Buium and the Vancouver third is probably okay. Grans is on his ELC and in his second season at Ontario, and Durzi is a top-4 defenseman; I seriously doubt that we would entertain trading Grans for that package and I know we wouldn't trade Durzi for it.

What you think Scheifele is worth? He has 1 year left on his deal. No way is he worth (2) 1sts

Walker is not worth a 3rd AND a prospect (Buium 36 in '21) taken basically the same pick as Grans (35th in '20) - they are the same. It's basically flipping Walker for a 3rd which is fair.

Would probably prefer another prospect or pick in return for TK. Fabbri doesn't really make sense moving into a rebuild

Johansson is a solid prospect, but maybe add another forward prospect instead of Fabbri. Fabbri is there to provide some offense as I don't think the PHI lineup will be all prospects. I think the (2) 2nds are on point. I don't see a 1st+ being include plus a solid prospect. If he was signed for a lower AAV maybe, but not now.

I get some of the targets but the values are off. I actually wouldn't mind Myers for a 1 year deal.

They won't be a prospect filled line up but the vet forwardss will likely be from within ie. Coots, Laughton, Atkinson. I think TK could fetch a 1st, 2nd and a solid prospect maybe just a one and a solid prospect is more realistic. I don't know too much about Johansson but seems like he's a good puck mover with solid skating I know provorov will likely be moved but even then York and Sanheim are still there on the left side with Zamula still in the AHL LD might not be the right piece. On a terrible team TK's a ppg player at $5.5 for the next two seasons and if he doesn't get hurt could potentially score 35 goals this season and has already cracked his career high. $5.5 for that is a great price

The unsigned NCAA player Buium and the professional player Grans are by no stretch of the imagination "the same." By the end of this season, Grans will have over 100 games in the AHL under his belt and Buium will have fewer than 85 games at the collegiate level. The difference in development is significant even before you factor in variables such as age, whether Buium will sign before his university career is over (and thus be of any use whatsoever to the Kings), and international experience. Where each of them was selected in two different draft years is utterly irrelevant to their respective trade or on-ice values. (If there was, I would point out that Grans was the fourth RhD taken in his draft and Buium was the eighth LhD taken in his.)

For a 40 goal scoring center in his prime? You're probably looking at Zadina and Edvinson being the base, maybe a 2nd on top of that. WPG is in win now mode and it will take a lot to get their best player.

You’re not far off with the dump of Schmidt with him, possibly a protected first over bostons and some how upgrading the third on team success or something along those lines. Jets probably not moving on from scheifele and doubling down on current with an attempt to make good with this nucleus, possible money in money out sort of moves in an attempt to upgrade rhd dman. So your build won’t be proven right or wrong.

Chiarot has more term though so no further ahead, better off keeping Schmidt.

Yes, the 1st could be DRW 1st with top 12 protection, but the Wings would most likely be a playoff team in this scenario so it should be pick 16-22. The 3rd could change to a 2nd if Wings win 1 playoff round and Scheifele plays in 50% of the games.

You wouldn't give Edvinsson a skate next year? Scheifele is a weasel. I'd prefer to not see him in our colors, but I can't deny that those lines don't look pretty good for us!

I honestly don't have a good gauge on what he'd go for, I just know that Winnipeg is going to want more than he's worth and I don't want him anyways as he's got a **** attitude.

no good trade for Scheifele.
He's gonna cost more than he'd be useful for. Plus, he's 30 - doesn't match the lineage that he has clearly set at the TDL.

Try for younger players.
Also, Yzerman probably doesn't try to get a brand spanking new RD until we see Anton Johannson fail to develop.

Taking the question just by itself, yes, I want to see him on the ice next year, but I continue to ponder about this.... with Ray and Mo's extensions kicking in the following year, it might be good to hold Edvisson back 1 more year then have him have 3 seasons on his ELC for the first 3 years of their extensions to sign some scoring vets for when Perron, Kubs, Vrana cap come off the books to align for a better balanced team. Unfortunately, the salary cap plays with our mind so much when thinking about timing and cascading of contracts.

I highly doubt that Mo will be our only RH D going into next year and it would be bad if we didn't acquire someone for the top 4 since Anton is 18. In a best case scenario we would have multiple RHD prospects in the 18-22 yo range. Cannot only bank on Anton. A top 4 vet signed to 2-4 years would be nice.
