Johnny Hockey and Lucic - Cap Neutral Trade

Whenever I hear this I can't help but think how contradictory it is. Adding Frost or Farabee for Gaudreau makes the Flames worse now too. Sure in the long term it (if Frost and Farabee progress as we hope) levels out but if definitely say my offer helps the Flames more right now. I doubt there's a deal that can be made that leaves the Flames better off after moving Gaudreau in terms of his pure skill level for cap hit. Frost was a 27th overall pick, you get to draft your own Frost with the 1st rounder.

Maybe, he could also just need to go somewhere else and reset. I think he could fit in on the Flames too. Plus the rest of the package (subtracting Lucic, adding a decent prospect and a first) adds weight.

There's a bunch of other NHL players that have the same issue - they missed time getting diagnosed but it doesn't really effect them now. It takes time for the right meds or even lifestyle changes to be found in the right dose, it's not a case of "for migranes take medicine x".
I think Partick will be just fine. It's just gonna take time. There's no reason to think his hockey skills will diminish, this isn't like a knee injury thing where you can re-hab but never get back to where you were physically.

I think the issue here is that if the Flyers are contending by deadline then Lindblom and Sanheim have likely taken steps forward in their contributions. Contending teams at deadline don't subtract contributing players, they move prospects and picks.

The Flyers aren't giving up Patrick for that (or even at all). A first round pick in 3 years? That's literally deferring it to hope it's less valuable. So the Flyers get the lesser player and a pick that doesn't help then as an asset for 3 years (then another few as the drafted player develops) that you're hoping is in the 25-32 draft range? Why would we do that? Where's the upside for us?

I could see this - it's a hard balance though, he does produce points, that's not so easy to replace. If Konecny breaks out towards a 70 point player I think Jake could be seeing his days numbered.

I think that, health permitting, Rubtsov will be the first forward call up. I could see Frost (less so Farabee) making the team from camp but I think Rubtsov is the first guy they call up from the Phantoms in season regardless who's down there. I wonder if the hope over the next few seasons if to move one of JVR or Voracek and lose the other in the expansion draft (with a first round pick or prospect or other incentive).
Makes a lot of cap sense for the Flyers down the road with the likes of Frost, Farabee, Rubtsov, Ratcliffe, Allison, Brink, etc, all seemingly good beats to at least be NHL quality players.

Minor Moves Cap Grooves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Zubrowka</b></div><div>You have the effect backwards. MacArthur is LTIR money; it doesn't hit the cap. Schlemko is healthy, so he hits the cap. This gets Ottawa $2.1 closer to the floor, while saving $2.95mil in real money.
Edit: Let me break it down this way so it is super clear:
Schlemko
Cap hit - $2.1
Salary/Bonus Total - $1.8
MacArthur
Cap hit - $0 (LTIR)
Salary/Bonus Total - $4.75
TY for the comment prompting me to lay it out better.</div></div>
The problem is that LITR doesn't remove the players cap hit from the teams cap total - it expands it by a certain amount (which depends on when and how it's done). It can be a real negative for trying to accumulate cap space and bonus payments.

That does a bit of a disservice to the players involved. Juulsen is a young RD, once you've overpaid Myers he'll slot in fine. Byron is a speed winger who can score. He's a reasonable lower lineup replacement for Ehlers.
I get your point though. Same with the Flyers moving Ghost.

Realistic Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>markmws</b></div><div>While I disagree with the return presented, I also disagree that the Flyers would not benefit from shopping him. Yes, the right side is now solidified, however the left side has Provorov, Ghost, Hagg, with Morin knocking at the door. The fact remains that Ghost, who is 26, costs 4.5 million over the next 4 years, while Hagg is 24 and is a cheaper, albeit still strong option. With Morin knocking at the door and a right side that includes Niskenan, Myers, Sanheim, and Baun, the flyers could conceivable afford to part ways with Ghost IF it leads them to a bigger offensive fish.
I am by no means saying that they are shopping him, but they could conceivable shop him and it could be beneficial. The Subban trade is a good example: Trading a contract to free up space for a bigger offensive fish. Again, and I want to make this clear, I am not saying they are shopping him or that it would happen. Okay? Just that it could conceivable be beneficial. If the Canadiens were to trade for him, their first in 2020 would have to be involved, along with a cheaper, more high-end prospect AND one of their top defensive prospects not named Romanov. Maybe 2020's first, Josh Brook and Ylonen? Zero money returning, which helps them in free agency while stock piling high-end future assets. AGAIN, I am not saying that it will happen, or even that it makes sense, I am just saying that it's possible.</div></div>
I get that there are reasons where he could be moved (Ehlers for example - the Flyers take a small amount of cap back, swap two good players coming off down years and address teams needs).
That said Sanheim and Ghost can both play either side. Hagg is terrible and will hopefully be moved out to make Morin the 7th. It's also worth remembering that Provorov wasn't brilliant last season, and expecting Sanheim to be awesome again is a gamble (though a reasonable one). Ghost gives a huge insurance policy. There's a very strong chance he bounces back IMO just because he seems like the kind of guy who plays well in a good team rather than a guy who can carry the team. Frankly a pairing of Ghost - Weber seems perfect. Additionally Braun is here for one year. Ghost could easily be back in the top 4 fairly soon.
I don't think there's a free agent forward who'd give you what Ghost gives you for the same sort of cost. Ghost is understandably terrible at clearing his crease, other than that he's a very good D.
I don't really see much point in the Flyers collecting picks (first round or otherwise) in a major trade unless they're going to be instantly moved for another piece.
Basically I think the most reasonable Montreal trade is just Drouin for Ghost, but I suspect they don't want to move Drouin for precisely the reasons we shouldn't move Ghost.

Realistic Moves
Why do the Flyers want Juulsen? We have our 3 RHD set and Myers is basically our carbon copy of Juulsen. So there's no space in our roster for him. We've also opened enough cap space up that we're not in any immediate cap trouble.
As Fletcher has said, we've had calls about Ghost (presumably because we've added to our D) but we're not shopping him - it'll have to be a great return to make us move him and a 3rd line winger, a prospect D we don't need, and a pick we're not interested in collecting doesn't fit for us.

Sakic and Yzerman both waited Over a year before they moved their players. They did what was best for the team not for the player. JP has had his chances to succeed but has never taken advantage of them.</div></div>
I get what you're saying but Drouin and Duchene were still putting up plenty of points for their teams and providing positive on ice results. Letting Puljujärvi go back to Europe isn't going to achieve anything much in all liklihood. If he does well there he might just stay there. Even then I doubt a team would pay much off a premium for him.

Those players had talent and therefore value though, that wasn't their issue. Puljujärvi hadn't performed and wants out. Drouin had 32 points in 70 games in his first NHL season, he had lots of value already. There's a big difference in trading a player who's performing and wants out that a player falling well short and wants out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oilfan1717</b></div><div>Lindblom and a mid-round pick.</div></div>
This seems wildly optimistic. Lindblom just scored almost as many points in one season as Puljujärvi has over 3. Lindblom is trending up, Puljujärvi is at best stagnating. I get you wanna get something worthwhile for him, but it's a big gamble for the team trading for him - I doubt they give up a player that is playing more minutes and outperforming him at similar cap hit.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eclipze</b></div><div>That’s the Oilers plan. If he wants to go to Europe then let him go. One of 3 things is gonna happen. Hes gonna go boost his value and we can move him for more or he can decide to come back to Edmonton with new management. The worst case scenario is he doesn’t improve and we simply move him for whatever we can get. Holland is very aware of this and for teams to think he will sell low is ridiculous. One of the biggest mistakes Chia made was moving Yak the way he did.</div></div>
I doubt it. That's just the EDM side posturing. If he is done with EDM then it's best to just move on and get an asset you can use sooner rather than down the road. There needs to be some clean breaks in EDM, hanging on to unhappy players to hope their value goes up playing elsewhere doesn't do much good IMO. I'm sure you could get a serviceable middle sixer somewhere that could provide on ice value this coming season. I wouldn't be too fussed if the Flyers moved Hartman and a mid-to-later round pick for Puljujärvi. I think that's a decent return.

Eh? The Avs are getting flecced. They want to get better now, not permanently acquire more picks. Kadri is a good add for them but Kerfoot isn't far behind and Zaitsev for Barrie is a bit negative. Add in they've retained salary too it's a big no. If they move Barrie it's too improve their roster. A straight Barrie for Kadri would be a better option with maybe a mid pick from the Avs due to UFA status soon.

New trash low cap and Ghost
Flyers aren't retaining on Ghost when he's already on a really good deal and giving up Ratcliffe in any package. That costs us one of our better prospects, and saves us $3.75m - Ghost more than outplayed that value even in a down year. I don't dislike Miller but we're set at RHD after the recent trades and again we're taking cap on in the deal which we can't afford to do with all our RFA's, it's gonna be tight to get them in as it is. We also don't need two roster forwards so that's another waste of cap we don't have for us. Again, I don;t dislike any of the pieces as such, it just doesn't work in anyway for the Flyers right now.

How does this do anything for the Flyers? We're in the business of making the team better now. We don't need more draft picks or prospects, we just want a few good ones. If anything we'd want to move the 11OA and a player to move up in the draft.

My Most Straight Forward and Reasonable Attempt

I think the 3rd pair thing is misleading though. He'll still play 4 mins most nights on the PP, plus he'll pick up shifts in the top 4 in offensive situations. If he plays well he could quickly be back in the top 4 too.
It is too much money on the back end but that's on Braun and Niskanen (well it's on Fletcher obviously). Braun is a UFA after the season so I feel you've just got to make it work this year. If Ghost is just reasonable this time next year move him then - his contract will still make him an asset to someone unless he just can't play anymore. But it's low risk, high reward to keep him.
