Have to do something with the core
Yea I don't think the trade is horrible with the Ducks but just don't think they would accept, they aren't going to contend (even for a playoff spot) for a year or two so why give up a younger big centerman for a scoring winger. Nylander is a good player not taking anything away just the timeline and position value don't seem to match.

Nylander for Adam Fantilli plus a second rounder is laughable
Also a lot of Toronto fans on here are doing the Murray to Arizona for the Boston first and Arizona is sending back their second.... but like do Leafs fans not understand that Arizona is basically only moving up like 8 spots or something if they make this trade. They eat a awful contract and only move up like 8-10 slots, doesn't seem very worth it

Arizona and Buffalo laugh at this
You gave Buffalo two mid to late first round picks and a third line center for Eichel?
And Arizona I keep seeing Chychrun trades here for leafs fans like Chychrun is young stud dman, had an amazing season and has one of the better cap hits in the league why give that up?! On top of that Arizona isn't competing right now so I know marner isn’t old but Arizona would side with youth and better cap numbers here.

We just have different opinions on him then (which is fine), I think the most he'll ever be (especially is they want to compete) is a 3rd pairing guy. And if the Wild were to ever offer that for some reason Dubas should accept in less than a second.

Ekblad for Nylander
I don't think Florida would take that deal. As soon as Florida gets rid of Ekblad they will immediately need another stud RHD defensemen that can eat 25 min a night. Not to just single you out (cause i've seen a ton of people do it) but I think people need to realize it is much easier to acquire/draft and develop a point producing top 6 winger than it is to get a number 1 defensemen (or center). So all the offers people are submitting for players like Ekblad and others like him, I think they to realize a bit that the Leafs would have to overpay in order to acquire a player of that caliber.
Also, same can be said for the Wild trade, Greenway doesn't put up monster points but he does play in the top 9 and can even squeeze into the Wilds top 6. Guys like Wilson/Maroon/Josh Anderson, those guys are also unbelievably valuable in a playoff series and I don't think their current teams want to give away big/tough/gritty guys like for a 3rd pairing guy. They don't put up monster stats but there value to the team goes much deeper than just the points they put up.

Joining the Marner trading parade
Ottawa is giving up way to much, not trying to insult Marner but he isn't worth this much. You have them giving up their two top prospects in Brannstrom and Formenton and 3 lottery picks for the draft (San Jose pick has the 3rd best odds to win the 2020 draft and Ottawa isn't likely to contend next year so the 2021 pick would most likely be a very high one as well).
Marner is still young and very talented but this trade would lopsided against the Senators

So Vancouver is giving up the better defenseman who has only one year left on his deal for a guy who has played woefully bad the last couple seasons and is still going to be paid 4.5 million for the next 5 seasons and to top it all off Vancouver will have to retain salary on Tanev.
I mean look at this deal from an unbiased perspective (like if Zaitzev was on a different team) you can't actually think this would be a fair deal?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MattyMadden28</b></div><div>Josh Manson is a good D man. But let’s not get carried away here. He’s at best a shutdown D who stops a cycle with zero offense. That’s pretty much Zaitsev. The only real difference is Z makes bad decisions with the puck and Manson can make a pass. But Z has all the tools. He also gets Harped on more because he’s a leaf. Just like everyone thinks Gards is **** cause he makes a mistake but he’s really an elite Dman. So I disagree that a shutdown D making 4mil a year is worth more then a middle 6 youngish scorer. A D man to replace the guy you trade and a pick.</div></div>
I mean we just having differing opinions then if I'm the Ducks its a no go for the trade. Just like you said players like Gardiner get harped on because they are Leafs (I actually to agree with you on that he is not as bad as a lot of fans make him out to be) but the same can be said for Leafs fans overvaluing their players. Johnsson while solid isn't this great piece that every team is going to see as a cornerstone piece for their future. He is not as nice of a piece as Kapanen would be and the Ducks would surely be asking for Kap in this deal if Manson is involved (he's been in their top 4 for a couple years now playing 20+ minutes a night so losing him would be a massive loss for them). Put yourself in the Ducks GMs shoes I mean look at what you are being offered by the Leafs a third line player and a late 3rd round pick (not even going to mention Zaitzev he's awful/overpaid) for a guy who would become the second best defensemen on the team (there is a argument for Gardiner here too) slot into your top pairing and play 25+ minutes a night with Rielly. Like would you really accept that if you're the Ducks?
And about Zaitzev again I mean come on you can't actually believe the he and Manson are the same player can you? If he is this type of player then why do you even need a player like Manson, why does everyone want to trade him and furthermore, why do the Leafs even need to sure up there backend if he is good but just gets harped on too much cause he is a Leaf?
Not trying to rip on you for the Zaitzev comment but it genuinely makes me wonder about people's thought process on this site. So many people on this site think the same as you do about Zaitzev when making trades and for me it always bring up this question if he is a good/the way you describe him then why trade him isn't he exactly what you need a good solid RHD on the backend? Like a comparable trade to me would be Alzner in Montreal, would you or other Leafs fans take Alzner from the Habs in exchange for a 4th round pick (if they had cap space)? I'm pretty sure you would laugh at that offer by the Habs and I think thats what every GM in the league would do to the Leafs if they are offering up Zaitzev unless they get a premium return or eat a bunch of salary

I think Toronto should target a player like Manson, he fits a lot of their needs on the backend. But the trade you proposed is completely lopsided, you gave a 3rd liner and a 3rd round pick for Manson (I didn't mention Zaitzev but I'll mention why that is below) if you are looking to get Manson I think the trade would have to be someone like Kapanen, Bracco and a 1st. I'm not even sure the ducks would accept that they might want more quality over quantity but it is at least it's closer to being fair and still a big win for the Leafs.
And for Zaitzev this guy is almost completely untradeable at this point. No GM in their right mind is going to take a bottom 6 defensemen (this might even be generous given how he plays some night should be a AHL Dman) who is signed for an 4.5m AAV for the next 5 seasons. This is one thing that confuses me about some Leafs fans on this site who always include Zaitzev deals for nothing acting like any/everyone would take him just for a mid to late round pick. If you were actually going to trade Zaitzev you would A. have to pray he starts playing better and when you deal him you retain 1-2 million AAV of his salary for a while or B. have to package him with like a first round pick or top prospect and get little to nothing in return just for someone to eat his money for the next 5 season

Me and you have very different viewpoints then on what is "very generous". I mean Nylander is a solid piece in the deal but his struggles this season would definitely have other GMs wary about trading for him. Outside of that you really aren't giving up a lot, Sandin is a good but not great prospect and the Leafs are Cup contenders too so those draft picks will be very late picks in each round. Just don't think in a million years Nashville would even consider this deal as of right now.

Don't think that is gonna happen. Also, I don't understand why people on this site always think that Josi is a realistic option for the Leafs to trade for, he's arguably a top 5 defensemen in the league and is on a Stanley Cup contending team (they will be contenders for a couple more years at least as well) why do people always this that Nashville would trade him? Only way I can see is if they got an outrageous deal in return

I don't mind the contracts that you've laid out for the next year but, all of the trades you proposed would be swiftly rejected by the other GMs. Couple stud defensemen in Parayko and Pesce but they give up a couple third line players and late draft picks? Realistically there needs to be way more value if St Louis and Carolina would even consider it. I'm also starting to believe with the way Zaitzev has been playing this year that he is practically untradeable at this point that 4.5 for the next 5-6 years is scary and no GM in there right mind would touch that.

I don't see why this is a overpay, Brown who is playing on your third line right now and a 1st round pick (which will be in the 20+ area), doesn't seem like that great of a price to pay for someone who you can slot into a top 4 role and would be a great compliment for Rielly on the top pair.
People always seem to bash Tanev in every trade scenario that comes up on this site but at the end of the day he would be a much needed improvement on the right side defence for the Leafs, and a trade for a late 1st round draft pick and a young winger (which the team has a surplus of) doesn't seem that crazy to me.

Not saying Cal Foote isn't a good prospect at all but Point and Sergachev are at a higher tier than Foote, not to mention the picks they would send would be low round picks given how good the lightning are currently and how much better they would be with Karlsson. Karlsson after all is a two time Norris winner and arguably one of/if not the best defensemen in the league Ottawa should not go forward with a trade with Tampa that doesn't include one of there two best youngsters. I agree its is a risk for Yzerman to send a piece like that for a guy who only has one year left on his deal but if he did/does trade and resign Erik the reward would be worth it.

Not a very good trade from an Ottawa standpoint. Point or Sergachev have to be involved along with some other pieces/picks in any deal for Karlsson. It would be a stupid decision for Ottawa not to demand one for those two blue chip youngsters and to settle for much less talented prospects.

2019 3.8M cap space with big 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>I know everyone thinks he'll get 10M+ and they all use Eichel as the reason. I don't believe a successful organization can use decisions made by another organization that hasn't made the playoffs in 7 years as a comparable.
The idea here was to show how they fit the money in without moving anyone. Personally, I think Matthews gets 8M x 8 or 7M x 5 and I believe that is too much. I see Marner and Mathews as very similar in value to the team and Nylander can't be forgotten as well.
There was only one 10M player in the playoffs last year and he was swept in the 1st round. Winners make better decisions within the cap, losers handcuff themselves.</div></div>
I don't think are opinions are ever going to see eyes to eye on this topic we just have different views from each other (not saying this as a bad thing just differing views)
The one thing I'll say to your last point there is just be aware that the cap is going up these next couple seasons as well, which makes 10 million not mean the exact same thing as it did even three years ago in terms of percentage of salary cap. Ex. Crosby/Malkin in 15-16 when they won the cup accounted for about 25-26% of there teams salary cap and if Matthews signed next year for 10-11 million him an Tavares would take up roughly around the same (25-27%) percentage of cap space as Crosby and Malkin (assuming the cap goes up by at least a couple million by 2019 as expected). So its not impossible to win with a couple expensive players on the roster.
But like I said before I guess I can see where your coming from if you are Dubas and or a Leafs fan you would want Matthews at a lower pay annually but I'm thinking from Matthew's/his agent's perspective in that he will go in there and want Eichel/Tavares money (money which I personally believe he will get/deserve)

what's the better trade from Ottawa's perspective
Personally, I'd go with the Tampa trade because it is easier to find point producing wingers in this league than stud defensemen and Ottawa's defence would be set for the next 5-10 with the likes of Chabot, Sergachev, Ceci leading the way. Not to mention, the Johnson can be a top 2 centermen and Cal Foote is a highly regarded prospect.
The Toronto one isn't that bad either but just not as much return as the Tampa Bay package.

Everyone seems to forget that UFAs, like Tavares, and Stamkos, have all the leverage in not only dollars, but where they play.
Stamkos already played for a contender, one with no state tax and one that is trying to Erik mfing Karlsson. Why would he leave?
Tavares played for a going show of a franchise and after 9 years, 9 years....., tested the market. Matthews has 2 years and no leverage. I get the fans think he is the second coming of Christ but he's not.
I went conservative to show what's actually there. You added up to 8M in your thoughts, which is the norm, I get it, but no one seems to understand the concept that there just isn't that much money as well as these players aren't worth it.</div></div>
I guess we are just going to have to disagree on this one. I think you are wildly undervaluing the big three (especially Matthews). and you are living in fantasy land if you believe he is only getting a 7x7 contract extension. He by all accounts is on his way to becoming a consistent top 5 center in the league and will be asking Dubas and the Leafs to pay him much more money than you seem to believe he is worth. A lot of the Hockey Insiders have said they believe Matthews contract will at least be matching Eichel's deal which I would believe would be a baseline for Matthews in his contract discussions. I get that he doesn't have as much leverage as Tavares did but no way in my opinion would he sign a 7x7 million per year contract I would figure he would sit out the season/ask to be traded before signing that far below his valuation.

Your salaries are very low for all the big three, I think they are going to be more towards
Matthews- 10.5-11 mil x 7 years
Marner- 7-8 mil x 7 years
Nylander- 7-8 mil x 7 years
You did some comparable contracts in the comments as your reasoning which I can see why you think your numbers make sense, but realistically players especially younger ones now a days (since the cap is rising very quickly) will get more than other players even if they are not as good as them. Like even bring up John Tavares, a couple comparable players to him would be Stamkos (8.5 mill per) , Scheifele (6.125 mill per) but he ended up getting 11 million much more than his 'comparable'. Even with Matthews, I still think Matthews is the best C on this team and will be for the next 7-8 years so I don't think he is going to be asking/getting anything less than Tavares (maybe 10-10.5 mil if he is willing to take a small pay cut).

The Arizona trade is very bad, Arizona would not give up a good/young talented NHLer and what would be a top 10 draft pick for a player who had a very subpar season and just signed a 7 year extension. As mentioned in some of the other comments Zaitzev's trade value is very low right now given the season he just had, most teams in the league would not even pick up the phone if the Leafs called looking for them to take Zaitzev.

Both of these trades do not make much sense.
Toronto is getting fleeced in the Vegas deal, you are sending Nylander (albeit getting rid of a not so good Zaitsev contract) to Vegas for a good prospect and what would be a late first and second round pick. Nylander's return should be more than that and Toronto need NHL ready players not prospects. I think if Toronto trades Nylander (I think they should be strongly considering dealing him) they need to get a NHL ready/ top 2 defensemen in return.
And then the Carolina deal, Carolina are the ones getting fleeced now. They are giving up a top 4 defensemen on there current team for a bottom 6 defensemen, a sub-par prospect and and late first round pick. Hard pass for the Canes.

The trades I can't see working are both the New York team trades and the Tampa one ( I think Tampa's package is one of the most intriguing and best ones that has been laid out but at the end of the day they have Kucherov, Vasilevskiy and others that need big contract extensions these next couple year so no way the can keep/resign Karlsson to the money he wants unless he is just being a rental for 1 year)
I don't mind your other three trades though, maybe take out Honka in the Dallas scenario because I think they are overpaying a bit in the original offer.

I think Nylander will be a bit higher in AAV and closer to Marner's contract some where is the range of 7-7.5 million for Nylander (Nylander and Marner are much more comparable players than people seem to think in terms of ability and overall statistics). I agree that Matthew's is getting 11 million per year at least especially after Tavares signed for that number, there is no way him or his agent is asking/getting anything less than the 11 million per year.
I'd be a little more wary of your salary cap as well, I think a jump to 85 million for 19-20 season is unlikely, I think it'll be a couple million below that.

I don't think this original ask (Brown, Rosen and 1st) is an overpay for Tanev at all, while I do agree that these trades on this site asking for Nylander for Tanev is a bit aggressive why do you think this is an overpay?
Like think about it for a second , you believe that a 3rd round pick (a late 3rd round pick also given how good the leafs will be) and a 25 year old "prospect" that hasn't broken into the NHL yet is a fair deal for a defensemen that you will slot into your top pairing and will be asked to be a top 2-3 defensemen on this team and be asked to play 20-25 minutes a night for you?
Furthermore, if you (and most of these other Maple Leafs fans on this thread) hold Tanev in such low regard why is he one of the main options you all go for in the attempt to strengthen your defense corp?
