Gusev takes less on a one year deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>total_knut</b></div><div>My biggest concern right now quite honestly, is why hasn't Jimmy signed? I get the complexities with Goose and therefore the delays, but Jimmy should be locked up. It's not like he can fetch a big salary given his 1 whole game of NHL experience, so why the delay? We're allowed to go 10% over the cap all summer so it's not like our overspending is an issue right now.
Definitely concerned. I sure hope his agent is not misleading him.
And yes, I agree that Deryk can come in at the minimum $700K and get performance money to make up for the shortcomings in salary....lots of room there since Cody and Nic are the only ones getting any of the 7.5%.</div></div>
I think the delay is that they are working around the edges as tight as they can, every 25k matters now

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Gusev can make just under $3 million in KHL, so at least have to top that.</div></div>
pray tell how he can make that when they have a now installed hard team cap in the KHL of 9.25m, that is an equivalent cap hit of $26.43m in the NHL
He was making 1.2m and that was on a contract before they had a hard cap, why do you think he bolted over here?

Goose gets signed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draftletic</b></div><div>I mean, do you have to? I know you must have a roster of at least 20 players, idk does it have to be 23. McPhee said he doesn’t see another cap move coming. But how do you fill it out then</div></div>
Holden was a benchwarmer last year and will be again this year. McPhee has stated that one of Hague, Whitecloud, and Schuldt will be fighting for that 6th spot. There is no requirement to have a 23 man unit, but it is wise to manage towards one
I do like the idea of signing Gusev for less money for just the one year deal, Gusev gets his UFA status next year and gets to prove his worth with a year of NHL experience

You could trade Holden out and use his salary recoup for 3 low contracts to balance out a 23 man roster

Trades with teams
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawkisles</b></div><div>One of the common fallacies I’ve seen on this site is “this player is worth [x], therefore, they must yield [x] in a trade”. The context of a trade matters. Vegas is kind of over a barrel here; they don’t really have the means to sign Gusev and every team knows that. So every team is going to try to get him for less. I suppose it’s possible Gusev’s price will rise as the season approaches, but this isn’t a case where Vegas can just hang on to him if they can’t get the return they want. They’re on the clock and they need to make some kind of a trade.
I also question why people think a guy who’s never played in the NHL should warrant a big return. European players don’t always translate well to the N American game, so why give up a lot in a trade for that?</div></div>
This is why he won't be traded, the offers are too low and Vegas just has to move Reaves and Holden to be able to sign him and become compliant

"They’ve had teams call from around the league, they’ve had a few offers but I don’t think the offers are what they would like. Right now they are getting something like a second round pick with a prospect or a late draft pick attached to that, which is not nearly the value Nikita Gusev should draw."

Since those offers are clearly not enough, that is the reason he hasn't been traded yet.

Trades with teams
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawkisles</b></div><div>I see only a single one sided trade.
VGK- Vegas can’t sign Gusev, they said they wanted a 2nd, a middling prospect and a mid to late puck. They also need RHDs. I think this is a good fit for both teams.
MTL- MTL gets a depth winger and a puck moving LHD that they desperately need. A 1st and a 2nd is reasonable unless you think MTL will still be in the cellar in two years (I don’t think they will).
EDM- Hickey is a borderline second pairing veteran defenseman with term. A 5th is underpayment.
FLA- Not a terrible return considering Hoffman’s on an expiring contract, but if Leddy can warrant a 1st, so can Hoffman. Or at least a better prospect than Vance Sompel, who’s a fine prospect, but nothing incredible.</div></div>
You are incorrectly quoting Jesse Granger about Gusev from the Athletic. Granger has clarified since
"They’ve had teams call from around the league, they’ve had a few offers but I don’t think the offers are what they would like. Right now they are getting something like a second round pick with a prospect or a late draft pick attached to that, which is not nearly the value Nikita Gusev should draw."

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>I think you missed the part when I said it was the worst case for Marner, not the Leafs. It's in Marner's best interest to become a UFA as soon as possible so he can drive up his value on the open market. He would probably consider accepting less money to become a UFA sooner, thus getting his big payday earlier. If he takes a 3-year deal, he has to go through this whole dog and pony show again in 2022, only to have to sign a long-term deal, likely at a reduced value than what he could get on the open market, thus significantly reducing his lifetime earnings.</div></div>
not sure thats true, the sales pitch on the low cap for this year and next year is that after the tv deals gets done the cap will skyrocket afterwards. 3 yrs with a 90+m cap even for an RFA is a big payday

I don't know if they trade his rights.. they don't want to lose him, and they just might let him sit in order to keep him. Seems like Dubas was close to exercising that option with Nylander</div></div>
Grew up in the Maritimes and was a Leaf fan as a kid, once a year my dad would take my brother and I to Maple Leaf Gardens. I was there the night Sittler scored his 10. Losing McDonald, Sittler and Salming to a kid who idolized them killed it for me.
In Vegas now, blown away by what the Knights have been able to do.
I can't see Dubas letting this drag on like Nylander fiasco, they would rather moved on and have certainty on what kind of team they want to ice

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rja</b></div><div>Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't someone on LTIR (in this example Clarkson) count towards the cap before the start of the season? In other words, I think you may have to move his contract too. I think a second rounder and solid prospect, along with taking Clarkson off the Knights' books, for Gusev, might be a little more fair and would save them the trouble of moving other players.</div></div>
They can place Clarkson on LTIR in the off season, training camp, and through the year. Three different formulas and applications. Vegas is in the same issue as Toronto is with Horton after they sign Marner. No one in Leafland is talking about trading Horton because it is a non issue

Both of those things can't happen if he signs an offer sheet since Toronto will take the 1sts and run if he does. Therefore, Matthews won't sign an offer sheet.
My guess is that he sits out the season before he takes less than 8-figures.</div></div>
My guess is the Leafs will trade his rights if it gets to that point. I am not a Leaf fan anymore (lost that in the Ballard years).
It was reported that both the Isles and Jackets discussed an offer, nothing came about. I think Marner was scared the Leafs wouldn't match. The longer it drags on the worse it gets for Marner.
Leafs still have to run their team
