If the MTL pick is between 5 and 7, I dont think MTL does it even for that one pick alone.
If they go on a small run and the pick is 10-12, then they might.

Saw an earlier tweet that the Hawks must be "wowed" to trade Debrincat and this doesn't "wow" me. Maybe take out the 2022 draft pick (heard that Davidson isn't interested in 2022 draft choices as he's revamping the scouting staff to get ready for 2023), and replace it with the Rangers 2023 and 2024 first rounders, plus maybe a second in either year and it's possible.</div></div>
Saw that tweet as well and I also didn't feel like this was a wow offer, but I feel like there clearly is a deal to be made with these teams to jumpstart Chicago's rebuild and help the Rangers cup aspirations.

Do they though? You certainly know NY's situation better than I do, but looking at it I see that they have 67M committed next year with a fairly full roster (they'll need a 2C which could be Strome or someone else). Unless Laf absolutely breaks out next year, you have to think that he'll get a 2-3 years cheap bridge for his second contract.
That leaves them money for a competent backup. I could be missing something, but I feel like it works for NY for the next 2-4 years at least.

What about this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>1- Uhh no I didn't. I literally said "the '23 draft <strong><em>might </em></strong>even be better than this years".
2- Speaking of absolutes, that's not what you said when I responded. You initially said "A 2022 draftee is closer to the NHL than a 2023 draftee" - which is not necessarily true. Now you are saying "more likely", which I would not have argued with.
3- Ah yes, I mixed that one up. My bad.
4- Ummm that's not actually a report, but Pierre stays away from the wiggle word crap, so I'll just go ahead and count it as close enough to one. However, a player's value is what others are willing to pay for him. Pierre made it pretty clear that many teams will want nothing to do with him, and that Montreal is going to need to come down off whatever it is they're asking. Put it all together, and maybe he has a <em>little </em>positive value - but it probably ain't much.
And considering their cap outlook, I'd say getting rid of 20M worth of Petry contract, getting Helleson and perhaps jumping a handful of draft spots is more than worth the loss of Petry and retaining about 1.5M on Compher this season. I'd call that a big win. You obviously disagree.
5- He's waaay closer to the latter than the former. The guy is 34 and will be 37 when his deal ends. I don;t think it's wacky to suggest he's well onto the down slope. The first half of last season is a looong time ago for a 34 year old.</div></div>
1 - I didn't say YOU were talking about the draft in absolutes, but rather that doing so is ridiculous.
2-4 - You're really nitpicking here lol
He's clearly on the down slope at his age, arguing otherwise would be ridiculous. I just don't agree that he's fallen off the cliff just yet. The sample is small, but he's back to his normal self since the coaching change and he's dealt with a lot of **** this year (away from his family because of COVID measures here, complete disconnect with previous coach and the team's SERIOUS SCF hangover - figuratively).
The deal likely won't age well, but he's currently still a very good and mobile minute eating D. I, unfortunately, watch every single Habs game and it's obvious that he still has some good hockey left in him. I don't expect other team's fans to do that, but thankfully other team's management groups do. If MTL was willing to retain a portion of the money and a team would get Petry at let's say 4M per until the end of the deal, they'd get an interesting return. Now, they won't get anything crazy, but they're not dumping him.

What about this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>1- Setting aside that claims about which draft is better or deeper, and what the "hit rate" for a certain range of picks, are nothing but way too early speculation about teenagers and an average that is not always applicable, and that 2022 draftees will automatically be closer to the NHL is again both presumptive and case by case... are you actually suggesting that Montreal is going to compete sooner? Heh, good one.
2- Link one such REPORT, please. I'll bet dollars to donuts whatever you link is not a report at all, but just wiggle word guess-floating nonsense.
3- Yeah I get The Athletic, too. It's not gospel, those rankings shift every season. And what they didn't mention is that his trajectory is going up at a higher than usual rate. Helleson was further down the list last year. Things are always changing. Some players improve, other don't. He very much does.
4- See #2. And I don't even recall LeBrun (the only one of those three who is worth more than a nickel) saying any such thing in his print articles.</div></div>
Yeah talking about the quality and depth of drafts in absolutes before it even happens is ridiculous, not what I'm trying to do. Also agree that it's a case by case, because you could draft an overager in 2023 but still, it's more likely that the 2022 draftee is closer to the league. I am not, the 2022 pick in this case is going to Philly, who would like to compete sooner rather than later.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gixC5ccog7E&ab_channel=TheSickPodcastwithTonyMarinaro
At 17:28 Lebrun says exactly that. He goes on saying that the Petry trade is a tough one because of term and that MTL has no appetite in retaining for some reason (which is not smart IMO because MTL won't compete in the next 3 years and should try to maximize the return on Petry) and not to expect a Toffoli type return. All of that to say that only getting Helleson for Petry while retaining on Compher is far from a fleece for MTL.
I understand the perception on Petry though, he's been absolutely brutal before the coaching change and everyone In MTL wanted him out. But let's not forget that in the first half or so of last season, Petry was in the early conversation for the Norris and not only in MTL. Granted he was playing above his head, but he was nearly PPG with great underlying numbers. Petry is neither the early 2020-2021 Norris Petry or the useless Petry we saw for 40 games this year, he's somewhere in between and other teams know that.

2- Reports... heh, good one. Petry is a 34 year old who has fallen off a cliff and is signed to 3x6.25 past this season. If his value is positive, it;s also microscopic. And Helleson is not a mediocre prospect. Not sure how you got that.
3- What executives?</div></div>
Next year's draft is incredible in terms of high end talent, but depth is similar and anyway, it can still change. In any case, the hit rate for prospects drafted in the 25 and 40 range is very close. A 2022 draftee is closer to the NHL than a 2023 draftee, which is a factor for teams looking to compete soon.
I'm not an insider, I can only rely on what's being reported, so yes, reports.
Helleson projects to be a 5th/6th D and he's not a top 5 prospect for Colorado who has a bottom half prospect pool, so yeah, decent prospect.
Reporters never name the executives they speak to, but it's been reported by Lebrun, Marek & Friedman, NRD.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Well, two teams are getting fleeced, and neither of them is Montreal.</div></div>
How? The 2nd in 2022 is pretty much a 1st. The 33rd-34th overall pick this year is worth pretty much the same as the 25th-30th overall in 2023, assuming nothing crazy happens in Colorado.
So overall MTL ships out Petry (who, based on numerous reports, still has positive value) and retains 50% on Compher for a mediocre prospect. How are they fleecing anyone?
If you view Petry has a cap dump that makes sense, but apparently, executives have stated that Petry's first 40 games this year do not completely overshadow his last solid 4-5 years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rino911</b></div><div>That’s not my logic. My logic is that I’ve seen many articles abt him and they rather get something out of him than let him go to fa next year. Koet and Suzuki will grow better than him in the coming years so that’s why they would trade him. Like I said trade is in the rangers side of things, def could use more . It not like u guys are even contenders now so it would be good if u trade Danult and let Suzuki and koet, than u also have domi under arbitration. That gives ur team time to get other assets and grow. Like I said again the trade can use a lot more but at the end of the day he will be a rental bc in the future will be a fringe 2c with the young guns u have coming up</div></div>
I agree with most of what you said, but the first proposal is just a major L for Montreal. KK and Suzuki are most likely going to surpass Danault in the near future which makes Danault expandable, though he'd be the perfect 3C on a contract that makes sense. If Montreal moves Danault with no extension in line it'll suck, but again even as a rental this deal didn't make sense. MTL is not a contender, but I don't see them trading a good roster player for futures, I honestly think their best move would be to try to package Danault (extended) with 16OA for a solid top 6 winger to bridge the gap between the youngsters and Price/Weber/Petry. 16 OA could be a great pick but most likely 2 years away from the NHL and 3 or 4 years minimum before being an impactful NHLer, and that's best case scenario. Price and Weber don't have so much time left.
If we do end up trading Domi or Danault for futures, I'll be slightly disappointed.

That's a weird logic. Because Danault is in the 3rd center chair, even though he's currently Habs' best center (you could argue that Suzuki is), his trade value is the trade value of a 3C.
I'll counter you, because Kreider and Panarin have the top 2 LW spots, Lafreniere is only a 3rd LW, let's trade him for Armia and and a 2nd because that's what a 3rd LW is worth. Doesn't make sense.

You're right, it's 10 "NHL Games" per clause 10.2(a)(i)(A) of the CBA and "NHL Games" includes playoffs games. But IIRC he only played 6 games in the playoffs.
