Eichel and Drouin to PIT
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sonnnk</b></div><div>Everyone on this site has said Drouin is a cap dump. Pettersson is younger and is locked up longer than Chariot.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ricochetii</b></div><div>Half the active players are cap dumps if you listen to everyone on this site.
I mean <em>Crosby only had about 60 points to McDavid's 100, so he's way overpaid and it would be tough to get a team to take that contract.</em></div></div>
The only reason Drouin was ever considered a "cap dump" was because he took time off for personal reasons. Meaning the uncertainty of not knowing if he'd ever play again means no team will ever trade for him. The minute he says "Ok Im back" is the minute he gets all his value back. Even if that value wasn't amazing to begin with, its still not nothing..
People throw out the term cap dump way too easily but with that said players "statuses" can change day to day. Drouin's changed with MB press conference. Others will not change no matter what happens.
Loui Eriksson is a cap dump
Andrew Ladd is a cap dump.
These players offer nothing of value that an 800K replacement player couldn't offer. Cap dump is a player that even if they were 100% healthy and ready to play, you wouldn't add them to the starting lineup. Drouin was never the case, his illness uncertainty was the only reason he had no value. Very different.
Drouin's case is similar to Eichel's. the only reason Eichel hasn't been traded already is the uncertainty of his surgery. If he comes back 100% healthy he is 100% Eichel again. Same for Drouin. Same can't be said for Ladd or Eriksson.

Year 3
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabStraction</b></div><div>The way i see it, 2020 to 2022 , we should be playoff contender,
In 2022-23, the cap hit will hit big time as your post clearly shows. Suzuki getting paid in the areas you mention, and Weber still there. I think a 2 years retool will occur at that time, until Weber retires.
When weber retires, we'' suddenly have 8 miilion to spend on 2 top 6 guys, or one top 3 guy, this will make a huge difference.
In other words, because of Price and Weber contracts, we'll have a good team for a few years, but not a Stanley Cup team that can beat Mackinnon and friends !
I hope Weber is unprotected and Seattle picks him, but it is unlikely.
Can't afford to pay Weber 8 M cap space when he'll be 37 yrs. old.</div></div>
They also expect the cap to go up in year 3 so there will be some relief and hopefully it goes on a steady rise year after year from than on

Keep Danault and low ball Domi out for anything that can help or simply keep him until another team comes and need him badly...
In regards of Ptery: 3yx6=18M... vs 4x4,5= same amount... time to cash out and then sign Mike Green type of contract 2yx2-3M with a cup contender named (Col, Tor, Carolina, Vegas)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabStraction</b></div><div>Good post. Yeah Hall at more than 7.5$ X 7years , I would not do. Also your post shows why imo we can't sign Gallagher. As much as I love Gally, I would like him at 5M$ X 5 years, and i'm not sure he agrees to that. Same for Petry. He will be 34, so I wouldn't sign him for that much. My guess is he'd be ok with less $$$ and longer term. I sign him at 4.5M$ X 4 years. Edler got 6$M from Canucks, but only for 2 years.
I totally agree with you about Armia and Danault money (although I think Danault asks for 5-7 years, to which I would agree.)</div></div>
I agree with most of this, too. Just my opinion (please don't hate), but I would personally sign Petry to a 7-7.5 million cap hit at 4 years. Again, that's just my opinion. He was lights out in this years playoffs. I completely agree with you on Gallagher: I love him, but I worry about the physical toll he has taken over the years. You could do worse than having Caufield, Armia, Ylonen, and Lehkonen on the right side (it's asking a lot of Caufield adn Ylonen, however. I think they make a move to address the right side this offseason).

I’m sure they’d want something like Sanheim + Frost + pick or Pesce + Suzuki + pick or Walker + Turcotte + pick. These are the type of trades Winnipeg would be chasing. Young players to fill 2C and RHD either now or in a year

The Danault conspiracy - plus getting some finns
I got the impression that Danault loves the team and being in Montreal, but won't be happy if he is relegated to a defensive 3C role in his contract year next season. Because if he is stuck behind Suzuki and Kotkaniemi, his point totals are going to drop considerably and really hurt his value in free agency.

Caufields 2nd in NCAA Goals already
if he has another great Junior Tournament this Winter he could be up sooner then later.
he's the future #1 RW
Our future top Center is a 3 way race right now as all over achieve defying limitations people set on them .
Our LW on the other hand has a bunch of good middle 6 players but no clear cut #1 LW .
that being said we got Drouin who is growing and still just 24 as well as Domi who's the same age who will likely be pushed to LW in time .
we need to find ourselves a Comtois type goal scorer for our LW but we need to find him in the Draft so his development will be on pace with the ending of the current LW's contracts allowing us to build up a solid depth for summer 2021 when half our roster needs contracts on 32m .(otherwise we'll run into another cap situation like this come 2024 )

Lehkonen-Weal-Armia

Niku-Weber

Kinkaid
We got a Good list of AHL Call Ups in Primeau , Leiskainen , Fleury ,Evans,Vedejmo and Mccarron fresh off surgery getting his shoulder repaired from a injury in 2014-15 vs TML that didnt heal right .We got Ylonen , Ikonen Norlinder and Olofsson in Europe as well as Harris ,Pitlick and Struble in the AHL with Alex Romanov in his Final year in the KHL and according to his last interview will be a starter for MTL in 2020-21 .
We can afford to give up Kotkanemi if the Upside is a Laine but we need Niku if we're giving up a player with 2 years left on their ELC and isnt artbitration eligible for 3 years so WPG will be looking at a cheap contract and MTL will be looking at a 9-10 million dollar 5-7 year commitment . if we get Niku it solve's our LD issues as even though Niku plays RD he's a left shot and he can easily become Weber's Set up man .

trading a teams most valuable player ep 1
Kotkaniemi is untouchable unless another top young center comes in. Center have so much more values, i mean look at laine this year without a real center, he as little to no impact at 5vs5 since he need someone to setup in. So by trading our first center we would be in similar situation. I mean value is there but like i said you centerman is so hard to find, and over the last 2 season kotkaniemi as add a amazing progression so i don’t see montreal trading him. I mean he have a similar parcours that barkov so if he turn out to be as good at barkov we will have a all star centerman.

If Poehling were to exceed expectations and play like a ROR type player (because lets agree he does play a similar 2-way style). I would take that over a Marner. I also think chances that Poehling reaches ROR level potential are higher than Suzuki reaching Marner potential. Let's be real though! the odds for both Suzuki or Poehling becoming any of those guys are still low. I just don't think Suzuki has the speed Marner has. Vision and Hands yes, but not speed.

Derniere pour Lafreniere please read description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabStraction</b></div><div>I agree with 90 % of what you're saying. The complain I hold against Bergevin is exactly what you mentionned in your first lines. ''A GM will not say openly that he will miss the playoffs !''
That's exactly the problem. Rangers have openly said they were rebuilding. Look at who they got :KAKKO. LOS ANGELES admitted they were rebuilding : they will get the top picks for a few years. If Montreal had the courage to really rebuild, they could have drafted one or two Dahlin, Rantanen, Marner, Heiskanen etc. over the last few years
One more reason for tanking : top UFA seem to always want to play for the same 4-5 teams and Montreal is not one of them. So how do you get the all-star players.
I wish the NHL would change the rules about draft selection because now the losers are the winners. Look at Toronto. Why are they contenders now ?
So until the rules change, the recipe is too contend 4-5 years, than loose 4-5 years. So let'S do it play Suzuki on power play, Poelhing on 2nd line with Drouin and Domi...ask Lekhonen to go all the way for offense (not defense), keep Mete on 1st, and think : dernière for Lafrenière</div></div>
You might finish last four year and a row and pick 4th in every draft so having One, two or
Three dahlin is really unrealistic. Plus rantanen was 10th overall, pastrnak 25th overall, Kuznetsov 25th overall so its more then just finishing last then making good selection. Buffalo pick up in the top ten last 7 year and they still are bad. Edmonton same
Thing. Montreal was in rebuilding mode and everyone knew it i just think that he never thought montreal would be that good last year. Trading Pacioretty for tatar and suzuki and galchenyuk for a year younger domi is rebuilding. Bringing armia, kulak, kk all that is rebuilt

projecting 2021-22 leads to some conclusions
Poehlings a RW or Center , he's never played LW at any level because he's usually one of the best 2 way centers on any team he's been on .
Domi-Kotkanemi-Gallagher(2 goal scorers with tons of heart capable of 55-60 goals beside Kotkanemi between the 2 of them )
Drouin-Poehling-Caufield (Poehling-Caufield got Chemistry on multiple team USA runs and put on a Clinic at Rookie Camp)
Lehkonen-Danault-Suzuki(Danault stays until either Evans , Ikonen , Olofsson or even KHL Prospect Khiamuntidinov who had 5 points in 9 games as a KHL rookie )
Byron-Evans -Armia (Byron and Armia provide the support an Evans needs to play Center )
Vedejmo (Teasdale will step up and we'll trade Byron or Lehkonen to make room depending on how long Surgery delays his progress . )
Mete-Weber (Mete will be close to becoming a complete all around D under Weber ready to replace him in 2023 when Webers contract becomes movable )
Romanov-Brook(by 2021-22 these two will have 1-2 seasons under them by now)
Kulak -Fleury (as good as Juulsen with potential to be a PP threat unlike Juulsen so we move him and Petry out so Brook and Fleury can play )
Harris (Primeau's RD in NCAA and for Team USA ,helping Primeau place top 10 among NCAA goalies year 1 and year 2 he helped him take NCAA #1 Goalie honors and as Primeau rises so will Harris stock)
Price
Primeau

DROUIN
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabStraction</b></div><div>I love Drouin but he has to play with more intensity. That's the trademark of the team.
Drouin can really a key player for us but <strong>only </strong>if put in the right situation. He is really weak along the boards.
Possibily 1 : IN A FAST LINE : With Domi and Shaw last year they were really fast and when playing teams with a more open style they were able to enter the zone easily and create chances. But when playing teams that brought them along the boards, they were not a good line. In other words, they were not able to install in the attacking zone for a long time
Possibility 2 : LESS FAST BUT STRONGER LINE : This is a better option for playoff hockey. Put Drouin with 2 relatively big guys : 1 guy strong on the boards and one sniper. For example, with a center like O'Reilly and a RW winger like Tarasenko. Or in Vegas, with Stasny and Stone. Since we don't have a RW sniper, i would do Drouin - Poelhing (strong) - Domi. or when KK gets stronger … Drouin - KK - Armia (strong).
But ideally, Drouin - KK - Laine</div></div>
I like the idea of a Drouin Domi Byron line and a Drouin KK Armia line. I think one thing we have to really consider is that KK is gonna grow. He could potentially hit 50 or more points next season. he's only 19. Honestly, I see him taking over a 2C spot behind Domi and having Danault slide down to 3C. His playmaking ability would be interesting to see beside Drouin. and Armia is excellent along the boards.
