Only reason he’s not in the NHL is because the Isles forward depth has been effective enough anyways. You have to think with the first injury to a forward, he comes up.

Excuse me, the Isles won last night, by this point the playoffs are just a formality for a parade.

I actually really liked Parise next to Barzal. I agree on Palmieri, he was chasing the play for most of the game.
While I’d rather see Holmstrom up here than Soshnikov, I’d personally prefer to wait for a 3rd line time to open up. Holmstrom’s game doesn’t fit what the Isles use their 2nd line for.

Oh, I’m not saying I approve of how the Isles are handling him, all I’m saying is that the Isles will try to trade up rather than trade laterally, which is what this post suggests.

I’m not saying Wahlstrom is completely off the market, but the Isles aren’t going to trade him for another question mark. They’d rather trade for a proven forward and add to the deal to make it happen than trade for another young forward straight up.

New York Islanders signed Mathew Barzal (8 Years / $9,150,000 AAV)
The way I see it there are two possibilities:
1. Barzal flourishes under Lambert and puts up 75-85 points from here on out, making this a fair but still team friendly deal. As the cap rises, this deal ages fantastically.
2. Barzal remains a 60 ish point player and the Isles have a bad contract on their hands, but if Barzal does continue to stagnate like that the team will eventually have to rebuild, and by that point, who cares what his contract is?
This deal stayed south of 10m aav, which was really all I asked for. So not an awesome deal, but not bad either. And I do think it could grow into a bargain if Barzal continues to improve.

I think we have enough prospects that can at least cut it as bottom 6 guys. If not, we can get creative in UFA.

Lou is avoiding bad trades like that. That trade would kneecap our team for a long time.

Agreed. I think Parise is probably out of gas by next year, we’d probably either give Holmstrom or Dufour a shot or get a depth option out of UFA.

If I’m Lou, I’d do this. It looks fair enough. My question is this: is St. Louis not looking to compete next year? I feel like even if Tank moves on, a trade like this would imply you’re not looking to contend this year.

If we get Dobson for that term but less, you will not hear me complain.

That deal to Vancouver doesn’t include Barzal, Dobson, 5 1st rounders and UBS Arena. The Canucks hang up immediately before an offer can be made.

Brock Nelson 2C
Interesting idea, but what the Isles need is an elite winger. I’m guessing Colorado has no interest in offloading Rantanen, Landeskog or Nichuskin for Brock.
The only other piece I could see the I shoes wanting would be Toews, but I also feel like Colorado would rightly say no. Cool concept, but what the Isles want isn’t for sale from the Avs.

I originally thought about proposing Beauvillier, Holmstrom and a 2nd, but I figured that was too little, especially considering the amount being retained.

Honestly, that just feels like acquiring Pageau for the third time. We’ve tried being a depth team that rolls all four lines and smothers teams to death. We still lost twice to a star studded squad, and now half of the playoff teams in the East will be ridiculously star studded. We need to get Barzal some help at some point, and I think there really aren’t any options for that this offseason that don’t involve selling the farm.
I don’t really think that’d do it. I say we see what options we’ll have at the TDL.

With Barzal coming up next year, we’re better off saving Cap space. I don’t see any forwards we can add that really change our chances at a Cup. I think we have a few assets (Varlamov, our 1st rounder) that will be more valuable at the TDL, and that’s where Lou’s at his strongest anyways.
There are deals like the Stromes or Nino that don’t change where we’re at as a team and there are deals like Kadri that make us worse. Really the only signing that would have changed our Cup chances was JG, and he’s a Blue Jacket now. Sometimes the best move is no move.

I doubt Calgary is going to just sell all assets just because Gaudreau left. Their rhetoric hasn’t been a whole lot of catastrophizing, I bet they try to stay relevant, and considering the division they’re in, I don’t blame them. Point is, I’d bet Calgary hangs on to Tkachuk. I certainly would. But even if they do sell on Tkachuk, how many assets would we need to sell for him? I’d bet easily north of Räty, a 1st, a 2nd and Beauvillier.
And honestly, I’d rather miss the playoffs this year than make the next Andrew Ladd signing. I bet we get one or two good years out of Kadri until leaves us with five years of cap hell. With his style of play, he’ll age way too quickly, especially playing Islanders hockey. Let another team get ripped off.

Can’t wait to hear you and other Isles fans bend over backwards explaining why trading more futures for a rental or why offering an aging physical center 8x7 is a great idea. No move is better than a bad move.
