Horvat I guess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>I do agree with you on that - even if you discount this year as being an outlier with his crazy shooting %, Horvat *is* a good player, by all accounts a great dude, and getting a guy who scores goals and is good on the power play addresses the biggest issue that the team had.
But yeah - even after a couple nice wins the team is still on the outside of the playoff picture, their prospect pool is in the bottom quarter of the league, and I don't know if this is the move that gets them over the hump. I'll happily eat all the crow possible if they make the run in the last third of the season, but it's going to take a big turnaround going forward.</div></div>
The only possible credit I can give Lou is that he knows something we don’t about Wahlstrom being much closer to healthy than we think. Then we might at least get to see this:
Lee-Horvat-Barzal
Palmieri-Nelson-Wahlstrom
Parise-Pageau-Bailey
Martin-Cizikas-Dufour
See, THAT offense along with our current defense and goaltending I can get behind. We could be a really sneaky dark horse type playoff team. But this is all unfettered optimism talking here

Oh jeez. Watch Horvat walk in UFA.
Don’t get me wrong, Horvat is an awesome add, but we’re essentially risking the rest of the farm on the whim of a guy who’s never been an Islander, AND in a year where we cleary won’t the Cup.

Wouldn’t be shocked if that BECAME true, but that’s speculation for now. And it’s not like we won’t have an opportunity to trade him for a king’s ransom if he does leave

You right, not sure why I didn’t put him there to begin with. I can see Bolduc filling his role in the near future anyways, albeit as an LD.

Wouldn’t be the first time the Isles took a chance on a guy who was down on his luck. Lehner was a risky pick up who turned out to be a Vezina candidate, locker room guy and fan favorite. If any team has shown they can handle this type of situation well, it’d be the Islanders.

I’d go with Lee, I hate the whole “you have to wear a current player’s jersey” thing. He’ll be fondly remembered by Isles fans forever, Dobson will likely be around for awhile but not necessarily the long haul.
Though I’ll admit, Dobson and Wahlstrom are both tempting, I love em both.

Shameless Self-Indulgence
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>I highly doubt either Kane or Toews would agree to extensions post the trade, but anything can happen. As we know, extensions can't be negotiated as part of a trade.
That being said, I doubt Chicago would accept this offer, it's just too light. Toews is playing very well again and see no reason he can't get a late 1st with 1/2 retained. Kane is going to take a late 1st and very good prospect. I don't think either of the prospects you included will work as the Hawks have a logjam of young players/prospects on defense especially on the left side and Bolduc doesn't move the needle to displace any of them. Iskhakov is far from being a lock to be a NHL player IMO (I'm willing to be he never becomes a fulltime NHL player) and a prospect that isn't a lock to be a NHL player is not going to hold much value in a trade for Kane or Toews.</div></div>
Like I said above, I kinda don’t care too much about value, this ain’t happening so who cares. I just wanted to see what it would look like to have all of my favorite players together on one roster, and Kane and Toews both being impending UFAs on a rebuilding team makes it plausible at least by ACGM standards.
That said, Bolduc has drawn some pretty flattering comparisons and Iskhakov got off to a pretty hot start in the AHL this year. They’re certainly worthwhile prospects. Though if you’re more interested in roster players, I feel like Beauvillier fits well with the Hawks. He’s still young enough where he’ll be around when you guys complete your rebuild.

Non hawks fan
Aatu is the cornerstone of an already weak Islanders prospect pool. Only way I see him getting moved is for someone younger/with term. If that means the Isles don’t get Kaner, it means the Isles don’t get Kaner.
I will agree that Kane to NYR makes zero sense, they need defensive depth and grit more than they need another fast moving scorer. The Isles are a much better fit in terms of what each team needs, but I doubt it happens because the Hawks are going to want a king’s ransom. I’m not sure the Isles can or should overpay for a guy on an expiring deal given how few future assets they have.
But for the heck of it, this would be my counteroffer:
NYI gets: Patrick Kane, who signs a three year deal immediately after the trade
CHI gets: 2023 1st, 2023 2nd, Ruslan Iskhakov, Anthony Beauvillier
If that‘s not enough, the Hawks can find another partner.

I don’t follow, the worst I said about him was that he’s overpaid and a middle six forward. If you want to dispute that, fine, but I never said he sucked.
To address whether or not he’s a defensive liability, from what I’ve seen of his analytics he seems… fine? Not too good or bad. I wouldn’t give up 5m in cap space for him, but I wouldn’t be scrambling to trade him away if he were already on my team either.

I think you’re really overselling him, but even if you weren’t, you’re missing the point. The Isles aren’t going to make a move for another middle six guy like Anderson. We already have enough guys like that. What the Isles need is a 1st line winger to skate with Barzal. Even if you’re claiming Anderson can do that, I’d argue Lee would already fill that mold on our team anyways. Anderson brings nothing to this team they don’t already have.
The Isles aren’t fit. Throw all the temper tantrums you want, but the Isles specifically aren’t a fit.

I’d do that in a heartbeat, especially with a longer term. With the salary cap going up and Wahlstrom still not having hit his potential yet, a 5aav deal would either age extremely well or at worst be about right for a second line winger. He’s defensively adequate for an offense first kind of player, is one of very few wingers on our team who can keep up with Barzal both physically and mentally and has been producing on a 40-50 point pace without PP minutes.

Iskhakov callup
LET’S GO!!!
As for what line he should be on, I’d have it something like this:
Parise-Barzal-Wahlstrom
Lee-Nelson-Beauvillier
Iskhakov-Pageau-Palmieri
Martin/Ross-Cizikas-Clutterbuck
Iskhakov is a hybrid between a 2 way player and a playmaker. This whole line can defend well and Iskhakov could dish the puck to Palmieri for offensive production. And Ruslan would bring something that line lacks: Speed. I think giving him some sheltered minutes at first would put him in a position where he’s not expected to put up crazy offensive numbers, but he has the opportunity to score.
I don’t really see him on the 2nd line. It always seems to me like that line’s strategy is to get the puck to the crease and collect on rebounds or just generally overwhelm the goalie. And it’s been working. But Iskhakov doesn’t have the body to play that kind of game, especially at the NHL level. He’s a speed/skill kind of guy
Longer term, Iskhakov has both the speed and IQ to keep up with Barzal. There’s a chance he’s that coveted LW1 we’ve been so desperate for. And if this call up goes well enough, I think it’d be worth it to see what Iskhakov-Barzal-Wahlstrom would look like for a game or two much later in the season. But I think 3rd line is the right place for now.

Martin-Cizikas-Bailey</div></div>
God, I’d love this line up both for short term and long term reasons. Iskhakov would look phenomenal next to Barzal, Wahlstrom and Beauvillier would give Nelson some speedier line mates to work with. This would also give Dufour and Räty time to develop, no need to send them into the NHL early and spoil their confidence. Even if Iskhakov didn’t stick on the top line, he’d still give this team some speed on whatever line he’s on. And we desperately need speed

I actually am a big fan of his so far, our defense is good enough to keep us in the game and our offense has improved dramatically. I also love how he’s not afraid to shuffle the lines if we’re not doing well.
But Soshnikov on the first line is just inexcusably bad. I’m just glad he abandoned it after two periods of zero production.
Continuing on about Iskhakov, I can understand why we couldn’t bring him up on such short notice. But I’ll admit, I was really hoping to see him called up today or tomorrow, if we’re really still looking for a guy to play wing for Barzal, why not try the AHL’s top rookie?

Long term, the contract situation is stable enough. However, Wahlstrom will still need a raise (my guess is around 3.5-4m aav) and Mayfield will either get a raise or leave, likely forcing us to find a replacement more expensive than 1.45m aav. Yes, Varlamov’s contract is up, but again, his new contract (or his replacement’s) will not be THAT cheap. Lou seems to like having a competent backup.
Even in the present, we only have 3m in cap space. We’d still need to clear around 2m to make room for Garland. Which would likely involve sending a forward back the other way.

I could see the Isles wanting send salary back in that trade, Wahlstrom and Sorokin have new contracts due in the next two years. Wouldn’t HAVE to be Beauvillier, but you’d think the Isles would send some kind of contact back.

These teams aren’t a good matchup. The Isles seem to finally have stabilized again with their current Top 4 defensemen. Even if Marner would look great on Barzal’s wing, it would cost them one of their three best defensemen, all of which are crucial to our success.
Doesn’t matter what the value is, I don’t see these teams making a Marner-centered deal.
