TBL offseason moves v2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brolekb2b</b></div><div>Yeah totally get that. Personally I see DeMelo extending in Winnipeg, they've assembled a solid group there and they absolutely have the cap space to keep him over there.
Got absolutely no issue with Chaffee on a line with an established playmaker and solid center, but both partners should also be able to drive the play and be capable of abundant scoring. Love Chaffee, he's worked so hard to get here, but I don't think he will be the go-to shooter on a top six line and that's nothing against him. I genuinely wouldn't be opposed to developing Max Groshev or Niko Huuhtanen in the top six next season, both have had great glimpses as well and should be considered as an extra forward out of camp or even in a middle six role.</div></div>
Maybe Groshev, but Huuhtanen is nowhere near ready for the NHL imo. He has the tools, but his skating and stamina need work. He also needs to adjust to NA ice. If he signs, I'd send him to Syracuse and working with Underhill next year, and then if he does well, perhaps make tbe jump to Tampa in '25-'26.

True, but trading for his rights wouldn't be an issue if he made it clear leading up to ufa that he was signing I'm Tampa. They'd give Vegas a 6th or something. There was some smoke out there that an extension was pretty close with Tampa in this range(maybe 6.75) had he been traded to Tampa. Again, I think it's a large mistake to sign Hanifin with the defensemen they already have, but it is possible.

Yeah, the more I watch Dumba and Perbix, the more of a liability I see both of them as on the team next year. I would rather use the space from both of the contracts and try to find an actual upgrade on the right side (Crozier could also factor in). There may be some hope still for Perbix, but he's been straight garbage lately, and likely cost the team at least a point tonight in a key game with his error late.

Looks good to me. The only real question is whether they prefer a combo of Perbix+Dumba, or perhaps they try and trade Perbix and use his money+what you have for Dumba on a better ufa dman. Otherwise, it's pretty much how I see it for next year ad well.

Summer of Steve but he turns into 2016 Pierre Dorion
Batherson is a clear upgrade and the kind of player that Tampa could use in the top 6 moving ahead. It's difficult for Tampa to say yes, not necessarily for the value in the trade, but because.of cap decisions that are coming(Stamkos, Duclair, does Hanifin come to Tampa or do they upgrade the defense with another ufa). There's no doubt Batherson is a much better player than Paul and on a good contract for the next couple of seasons, and JBB.has shown no problem moving picks before to get the player he wants. If Tampa did, then one of Stamkos or Duclair would definitely be out, and more than likely Hanifin as well unless Tampa made another move such as trading either Cernak or Cirelli. It's not impossible, but if Duclair wants to stay at a reasonable price, I'm guessing Tampa keeps Paul, Duclair, and the picks over Batherson.

Tampa declines rather easily. They aren't paying a 1st for a 4 years older than last time Savard, especially at a position they won't need that badly.

Hanifin check notes
I don't see Hanifin taking this gamble, even if it's with a team like Tampa. There's still far too much risk for him. If both sides want a deal, he'll be a member of the team on July 1. It will be interesting, as if he wants Tampa then JBB will have to decide if letting Stamkos walk and keeping Duke+Hanifin+ufa F add is the right play, or perhaps keeping Stamkos+Hanifin+lesser ufa F add with Duclair gone. There's really no good way to sign all 3 and add 2 more players to reach a 22 player roster, unless a more radical move his made(trading one of Cernak/Serg/Cirelli, which seems doubtful).

Very doubtful, as he didn't sign an extension after getting traded, and his camp has made it pretty clear he and his family wants somewhere close to home on the east coast. It may not end up being Tampa(although it does seem they're his preferred team and an extension with them was reportedly in place had he been traded there), but I don't see him extending in Vegas.

Fitting Hanifin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CertifiedAverage</b></div><div>Yeah, I'd assume it's taxes and weather. From a purely sporting perspective, BOS makes more sense. From TBL's perspective, the only way I see Hanifin making sense is if they think he is the long-term replacement for Hedman. Re-signing Stamkos would be a short-term solution. I don't see how TBL can work long-term and short-term at the same time. So I think if they go for Hanifin, Stamkos is gone unless he feels very charitable towards TBL, which is unlikely.</div></div>
If any player is going to take a big discount to remain in Tampa, it's 100% Stamkos. There have been some rumors that he may be looking at a 3 or 4 year deal in tbe 5 aav range. If that is the case, they can sign him, Hanifin between 6.5 and 7(which was the rumored value of the basically agreed upon extension If reports are to be believed), and probabaly extend Duclair as long as they replace Sheary and Jeannot with low cost Syracuse promotions/ufa's. It's very tight against the cap though to make it all work, so if Hanifin ends up elsewhere, not an issue for Tampa. They can then give Stamkos and Duclair a bit more perhaps, and still fairly easily acquire a solid #3/4 type dman from ufa(and it looks to be a very good summer for ufa dmen availability).

Agreed, if Stamkos is willing to take that deal, then he'll retire a Bolt. Tampa would also, in theory, be able to sign a higher quality dman like Hanifin, Walker etc with a couple of other minor moves. They could also do something like this and improve the middle 6 and add a lower cost dman(although personally I wouldn't target Tanev because of age, but who knows).

Stamkos and Hanifin will each need another million+ imo. Duclair and Dumba are closer to what they might take, although Duclair likely gets a bit more. Replacing Jeannot with someone making ~1 million helps some, but in the end, in order to reach a 22 player roster, more than likely one of the 4(Stamkos, Hanifin, Duclair, Dumba) won't be playing for Tampa next year.

They paid a rental price. They can think they will extend him, but Hanifin seems more interested in playing close to home/the east coast. If he makes it clear to Vegas that he won't extend with them, them getting a 3rd rd pick for just his signing rights is quite a good return.

Hanifin comes in around 6.75 more than likely. Stamkos is worth maybe 5 at this point. There is a way to have Hanifin(or another top 4 ufa dman), Duclair, and a F add. Jeannot can also be easily replaced to save the team another million or so. The defense has been trash this year. Adding some actual upgrades on defense seems far more important than overpaying a declining 3rd line pp specialist with no defense to their game.

Stamkos may re-sign if he takes a very team friendly deal. If not, oh well. He also hasn't been primarily a C for awhile, so as I said, Tampa doesn't need to trade for Dowd at a ridiculous price. Tampa has Point, Cirelli, Paul, Glendening, as well as a couple of promising centers that are close to getting promoted. Dowd for a.1st is a terrible overpay for most teams, and especially Tampa.

Too much for Stamkos. Tampa needs a legit top 4 dman to add. If Hanifin makes it to ufa, he'll be a member of the team on July 1. Stamkos may walk, but at thus point, Hanifin would have more value than Stamkos moving forward imo.

I think it's also possible that both Sheary and Jeannot are moved as well , in addition to Hanifin taking 500-750k less, in order to see about keeping Stamkos. Many on here seem to just assume Hanifin is just a lock to re-sign with Vegas, but that's far from any guarantee. Even if he does, there will be plenty of quality top 4 dmen more than likely hitting free agency this summer, and Tampa will likely be adding one.

Lightning 2023/24 Season Thread
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lightning_mcqueen</b></div><div>Not sure what to think anymore to be completely honest. Bolts had a perfect opportunity to rebound in the second half of the season and we didn't take it. At this point, the quantity of losses and the quality of play is a little embarrassing, and I'm not sure how to react. This is a strong organisation, but it feels as if we've got no solutions and have given up. Furthermore, the Duclair trade was a rather bad move in my opinion. With the wildcard race tightening up, and the Bolts seemingly still faltering, I wonder about the future of the season and seasons to come. Any thoughts?</div></div>
It's been a rough season from many, but the core is still young enough and talented enough to be contenders for several years to come. The Duclair trade was fine imo if JBB is planning on re-signing him. They very much needed(and still need at least another) reliable middle 6 scoring threat. I am.more frustrated by not paying the assets needed to seal the deal on Hanifin, as for what he ultimately went for, Tampa could've definitely made the trade work. The fact that there was reportedly an extension in place with Tampa made JBB's.unwillingness.to once not pony up the futures needed very frustrating. He's taking a very large gamble that Hanifin will only sign with Tampa, as if he extends.with Vegas or someone else then it's a massive failure for him
Moving forward past this season, they need to add a good dman(whether that's Hanifin, or another potential ufa to be such as Walker, Pesce, Skjei, etc), they need to have that strong top 4 again. A change in defensive structure would also help imo(as would relieving the assistant who implemented it). Even with a change in system, though, many of the higher paid players,.at all positions.must get back to the levels seen from them during the deep playoff runs. Finally, if Vasy can't start consistently playing like the G that was given a 9.5 aav, it won't matter much how well the defense improves.
I think in terms of the F unit, Stamkos either takes a very team friendly deal, or he can walk. His play has noticeably declined this year, and he seems to now be a 3rd line pp specialist. 4-5 million aav tops, as they simply can't sink much needed cap space into a bloated retirement contract for him. I think Duclair will also be re-signed on an affordable short term deal, and the team can create 2-2.5 million more by moving Sheary and Jeannot while replacing them with a combination of lower cap hit ufa's and/or Syracuse promotions. Use the extra available space to sign one additional middle/bottom 6 F, or, if Stamkos is let go, use 4-5 million on one higher end middle 6 forward with top 6 upside, or 2 solid middle 6 contributors. A little bit of a retool would be good, and as much as Stamkos has been the face of the franchise for a long time, you can't sacrifice opportunities during this window to accommodate any one player(especially an older vet who is, unfortunately, showing signs of decline, especially 5v5).

It was a good trade for both sides. Duclair is also more than likely not a rental given he was a player JBB and Co. were interested in for a while. He provides much needed forward depth in the middle 6. Thompson didn't crack the lineup when a spot was there for the taking given Perbix's play at times this year. He has some potential though, and is likely a solid 3rd pairing guy if he hits his ceiling. He'll likely get a good shot with S.J.,.who did well with no retention and a 3rd in addition.

Not even close. Most of the players on that list aren't close to Duclair, and most of the one's that ate close or maybe better are on teams that aren't selling or would extract an even higher premium. In the end, as I said earlier, Thompson wasn't going to be a top 4 in Tampa, and with Crozier playing well and magbe a move for someone like Carrier or Fabbro from Nashville,.not to mention any possible ufa's over the summer, Thompson was an expendable trade piece. JBB isn't getting fired and improved the team in one area that needed it, and hopefully, tomorrow, he'll address another.
